In March 2024, Milissa Box (DTP) was at a trash and treasure market. She'd found a $5 photo album for sale with some photos that she thought might be of interest… From what I can gather it belonged to the gentleman pictured who was a worker at Dandenong in the Comeng and ABB eras. He appears to have worked on the Z3, A1/A2, B1/B2 class trams, Hong Kong LRVs, Comeng Melbourne suburban trains, and later the extra Victorian-purchased XP power cars and XAM sleepers to enable the Riverina XPT to be extended to Melbourne. It's clear he was very proud of the vehicles he'd helped to build. I have scanned a selection of the images, which appear to be a mix of official builder's portraits, team photos, and self-taken shots showing candid everyday scenes on the shop floor. The photograph shows a section of remnant track at the intersection of Bourke and Spencer Sts that remained until it was removed on 25/8/1987 when connecting curves were installed at Bourke and Spencer Streets, forming a double track triangular junction, in preparation for the conversion of the St Kilda and Port Melbourne railway lines to 'light rail'. This necessitated the removal of the last few metres of cable car track in Melbourne, which had been left in situ at the former Bourke Street terminus as a reminder of bygone days. Set of four black and white prints of W2 221 derailed at South Melbourne tram depot, late 1960's? This tram was used a training vehicle for recovery crews to re-rail trams. Again possibly an early use of this vehicle as such - has "Kenric Best for Boys wear" sign on one end, and a "Collision not to be moved" Auxiliary board on the other end. Report - titled "Information - Resilient CSS (Concrete) Track" - prepared by the MMTB Engineering Testing Branch Dec. 1962. Report No. I 5/1/146. The report looks at the use of mass concrete where the rail is fully embedded and the noise issues compared with track fitted with a rubber-fluted rail pad. Details the tests undertaken and the results. Recommends a 100m test section be constructed and provides an estimate for this. Relaying tram tracks at the eastern end of Aphrasia St., Newtowwn, looking east. The location is immediately west of the Pleasant St. intersection, soon after Aphrasia St. was extended from Pleasant St. to Pakington St., so that the three sharp curves for trams into Retreat Road, Pleasant St., and then Aphrasia St., were reduced to one, from Pakington into Aphrasia St. May 1914. Note that sleepers are being used in the construction, as seen in items 9271 and 9214, with tie bars and continuous concrete about 50cm wide under each rail.
