William Henry Maw was a British civil engineer and astronomer. He was born in 1838 and died in 1924 at eighty-five years. Maw worked as an assistant at the workshops of the Eastern Counties Railway before he became a draughtsman in the design office. He designed the first outside cylinder locomotive for use in India. In 1865 he founded the journal Engineering and continued to be an editor for the rest of his life. Maw became a consulting engineer. He was president of the Civil and Mechanical Engineers' Society, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers. This book contains a wide range of articles and reviews related to industrial developments such as rail mill engines at the Dowlais iron works (constructed by Messrs. Kitson and Co., engineers, Leeds), cable tramway, Clay-street, San Francisco, U.S.A., road and railway bridge over the river Dnieper, at Jekaterinoslow, Russia (constructed from the designs of Professor N. The last silent film to be shown at the Athenaeum Theatre presented by E J Carroll. The theatre was managed by Frank Talbot Pty Ltd during his long lease of the theatre following his major renovations when Henry White the architect built an intimate theatre inside the old Athenaeum Hall. In addition to musical accompaniment for the film, the orchestra, and sometimes singers entertained audiences before the films commenced and during interval. Filmed on location in the jungles of Siam (Thailand). Programs, printed for early films at the Athenaeum Theatre provided the full program for the audience in the centre pages and gave background information about the story and the actors. Chang was the last silent film to be shown at the Athenaeum Theatre before the Jazz Singer changed cinema going for ever with the introduction of both vocal and musical sound. This set of 39 photographs were taken at a Corps Day Parade held at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo in July 1986. The Parade Commander was CO LTCOL Don Swiney MBE, and the Reviewing Officer was the former CO of the Army Survey Regiment – LTCOL Don Ridge (Retd). The Corps Day Parade was held to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. These photos comprise inspections of the Regiment’s four squadrons and the presentation of the Defence Force Service Medal in recognition of 15 years of efficient remunerated service to an unidentified Corporal.This is a set of 39 photographs of a Corps Day Parade held at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo in July 1986.
