Tawonga CWA branch commenced on 7th Feb. 1946. Prior to this the ladies would have been involved in supporting the war effort with knitted and spun items as described in this book. The branch often combined activities with the other branches in the Kiewa Valley. The C.W.A. aimed to improve health, welfare and education for women and children in the country. Getting together for the war effort would have succeeded in this aim perhaps encouraging the women to continue meeting under the banner of C.W.A.The Tawonga ladies would have been involved in assisting the war effort from home. Most of the ladies lived on remote farms so they may have got together, learnt together and felt happier while contributing to the war effort and supporting the men fighting overseas. Wool was available and easily made into useful items that could be shipped overseas. Alexander Wright was killed whilst performing at the Birmingham Empire as the result of a German air Attack in October 1940. The theatre had a direct hit. The stage name of Alex Wright was 'Navarre' "Prince of Mimics". According to Frank Wright Alex was a great impersonator with a unique range Bass - tenor with many accents (not unlike Peter Dawson) "AUSTRALIAN KILLED An Australian, Alexander Wright, radio variety star, who toured Europe and Australia under the pseudonym of Navarre, was killed during a recent air raid in a Midland . town. His broth-er, Frank Wright, is musical director for the London County council."(Border Morning Mail, 22 Oct 1940) Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.A mounted, studio sepia photograph of two children. This needle case, probably dating from early in the 20th century, contained knitting needles of various sizes and those needles were probably used in sets of four to knit such items as socks. In the early to mid 20th century many items of clothing and furnishings were hand knitted with the yarn mostly favoured being wool. Today knitting is a hobby taken up by a few and clothes that were once knitted are now bought ready-made. This needle case is of antiquarian interest and is retained for display purposes. This is a cylindrical metal case with a gold-coloured marbled pattern around the case and closed metal ends. One metal end swivels around to reveal four compartments that once contained metal knitting needles. One of these needles remains. The case has printing on both metal ends and on the case body but much of this is now indecipherable. Used by Miss Alice Mitchell of Stratford. Purchased in 1909 by Miss Mitchell’s mother, and later used by Miss Mitchell who, for the duration of the war, made two pairs of socks, a flannel singlet / shirt and a pair of pyjamas (the last two on this machine), each week, for the entire war. Miss Mitchell lost three brothers and her fiancée in World War I, and was a member of the Red cross for the two world wars, and served the organisation for over 50 years.A Singer treadle sewing machine set in a large table with cast iron legs and stand with the words SINGER on it. There are two wooden drawers on either side. The machine is black and ornamented in gold. The head swings down into the stand, forming a table when not in use.world war 1914-1918
