Negative No. N391 and black and white print made by a laser printer (stored in folder) of Ballarat tram No. 34 about to cross Grenville St from Sturt St into Bridge St. Photo has the driver setting the route to control the tram signals for Mt. Pleasant. Photo has the buildings along the north side of Sturt St in the photograph. Date of photo on folder - 5/9/1959, but this is incorrect, as the tram has been fitted with dash canopy lights and tiger stripes, post 1961. Folder and negative could have been mixed up. Original negative rescanned 24/5/2020 and image file updated. Machine - Glider – Sailplane
The ES49 glider / sailplane was designed by Edmund Schneider in Germany before he migrated to Australia in the early 1950s. In Germany the ES49 was put into limited production by the Schleicher factory from 1951 to 1953 (8 produced). In Australia the ES49 is commonly referred to as the “Wallaby”; two were built by the Adelaide Soaring Club with assistance from Edmund Schneider Ltd and one independently from plans by Eric Hader and members of the Cooma Gliding Club. The Museum’s ES49 – serial number GFA-HB-36 - was built at Gawler from 1955 to 1958 and registered as VH-GLL on 15 January 1959. It was the second of the ES49s built by the Adelaide Soaring Club. Originally it had a rather distinctive appearance due to the use of a sleek P51 Mustang canopy to enclose the forward seating position of the cockpit. The glider, together with its sister VH-GDK, was used at the Gliding Federation of Australia National Gliding Schools at Gawler. In 1964 the glider was transferred to the Newcastle Gliding Club, Newcastle, in New South Wales and then in 1966 it went to the Albury and District Gliding Club, Albury, New South Wales. The Snowy Mountains Gliding Club, Khancoban, New South Wales acquired the glider in 1968 where it remained until 1974. In 1974 the glider transferred into private hands at Wodonga, Victoria, for two years and then to interests at Albury until 1985. At that stage the glider was acquired by a private owner at Bathurst, New South Wales, who undertook a restoration that included, amongst other work, the fitting of a more conventional cockpit canopy. The glider was at Warkworth, New South Wales in 1992 and became to be owned by Eric Oates who preserved it until he donated it to the Australian Gliding Museum. According to the logbook for VH-GLL held by the Museum, the glider was last flown in November 1990 and at that time had logged 2758 hours and 57 minutes from 15775 launches. The fuselage is currently under restoration at the Museum’s Dave Darbyshire workshop. The ES49 – VH-GLL – is an example of the state of wood and fabric dual place sailplane design in the late 1940s. The glider served the Adelaide Soaring Club and subsequent owners well as a training and general purpose sailplane over many years. It is a rare example of the type (one of 4 existing in the world). Possibly 1971 or early 1972 prior to closure. 1 - High St Eaglehawk with Primary School hall behind. 2 - Tram 28 from another tram's window - note no driver. 3 - trams 28 and 30 in McCrae St with the Bendigo Technical College building in the background. 4 - Tour trams turning from Bernard St into View St with the Five Lions Hotel in the background with a Fosters Lager advertisement. In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. Built in 1926, the Band Rotunda was a gift to the people of Sandringham by local doctor and former soldier Thomas Garnet Leary. On Sunday afternoons throughout the inter-war years, brass bands such as the military uniformed 46th Battalion Brass Band and the popular Sandringham Boys Band would play. The canopied top storey comfortably held twenty five performers with enough room for their large instruments. Large crowds would picnic along the foreshore listening to the performances. When Thomas Bent, politician and land speculator, was appointed Speaker of the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1892, a number of local Brighton constituents and supporters raised money to present him with an oil portrait. Bent had been a member for Brighton for 21 years, and the painting was seen as a way of showing their appreciation of his services to the Brighton constituency, as well as congratulating him to his new position as Speaker. In June 1892, British/Australian landscape and portrait artist Charles E. Gordon-Frazer was given the commission to paint the portrait. Thomas Bent is depicted as standing in his Speaker's robe on the dais beneath the canopy in the Legislative Assembly Chamber in the act of addressing the House. He wears the traditional Speaker’s dress of a black silk and gold laced robe over a three-piece black suit, lace jabot and cuffs, buckled shoes and a ceremonial long wig. The date is approximate.Black and white photo of a large eucalyptus tree which appears to have had its canopy pruned. A woman in a cloche hat, identified as Mrs Mabel Carter, is leaning against it as if reading. In the background is a paling fence, beyond which is a weatherboard house and (?) a later brick house. The area between the foreground and the paling fence is roughly grassed without a footpath. About 10 feet up the trunk of the tree a wooden sign can just be distinguished. This is the street sign for Everton Grove. Norman and Mabel Carter lived at 21 Everton Grove. Humidicribs are used to transport sick babies from small hospitals to major hospitals for specialist care. They work by maintaining normal body temperature and provide oxygen if needed during ambulance transit. Known by a variety of commercial names, earlier humidicribs were ones heated with water bottles. Not part of an ambulances standard equipment, humidicribs are kept in ambulance stations and carried if babies needed to be transported. In the early days before humidicribs came into use and when air ambulances did not exist, many more babies died during emergency transits than do today The Thermocot Developed from the Port-O-Cot, CIG later produced the Thermocot. The new humidicrib had a number of advantages over the Port-O-Cot. Most importantly it had an over-temperature alarm and cut out. It was also calibrated in degrees Celsius as by then the metric measuring system had been introduced to Australia. It also had a front opening canopy which was easier for nursing staff to use. Machine - Glider - Sailplane, 1958
The Altair was built between January 1956 and November 1958 with first flight on 20 December 1958. After a few flights the cockpit was lengthened and the glider flown by Cliff Gurr and Ron Adair to complete their FAI Gold C badges. Cliff set an unofficial Australian record for an out and return flight (between Gawler and Renmark) of 230 miles (368 km) in 1961. The glider was flown by only Ron and Cliff until Mervyn Waghorn joined Ron to fly it in the National Championships at Waikerie in 1967. For a period of time the glider was left in the care of some members of the Geelong Gliding Club. Doug Vanstan of the Geelong Gliding Club fitted a new canopy and rebuilt the aileron bellcranks to improve their operation. Subsequently the Altair was flown in competitions and at vintage rallies until the mid 1980s. On 31 March 1987 Alan Patching of the Victorian Motorless Flight Group purchased the glider from Ron for the sum of one shilling and named the owners as himself, Doug Vanstan and Ian Patching. It has been stored at Bacchus Marsh airfield since then. The glider is the only 18 metre wing span machine to have been designed and built in Australia.The Altair glider is a single place 18 metre span cantilever wing glider constructed from spruce and aircraft plywood. The laminar flow wing is completely covered in plywood with a ply balsa sandwich for the leading edge and the airbrakes are unique being located in the trailing edge of the wings. All these features were done in an effort to retain laminar flow over the wing and achieve a high performance. The wings, empennage and top of the fuselage are painted white with the rest of the fuselage red. The Big Tree is listed a a tree of State significance on the National Trust's Register of Significant Trees of Victoria for its outstanding size, curious fusion of branches, as an outstanding example of the species and as an important landmark.A number of colour photographs of Guildford's Big Tree - a River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis). The tres is believed to be one of the largest examples of the species in Victoria, and has been recorded as having a height of 30 metre, a canopy spread of 34 metres, and a trunk circumference of 9.35 metres. The tree was already an ancient giant when white settlers first arrived in the 1840s. On Saturday evening, February 28th 2015, just as dusk was falling, Guildford was hit hard by tornado-like winds, felling the big cottonwood tree down by the river, and tearing limbs from the iconic Big Tree, reducing it by an estimated one third. The debris has been cleared since then and the tree seems to have survived its ordeal, though its size is certainly diminished.big tree, guidlford, river red gum -

Black and White print of Bendigo SECV Bendigo tram 18 at Charing Cross terminus for the Eaglehawk route with a single truck car crossing behind heading for Golden Square. Trams have dash canopy lights, but no large white strip under the drivers windows. Photo not dated but appears to be at during early 1960's. Tram 18 has White Horse Whiskey ad on front dash panel, SEC Roof ad "Electricity best for Cooking" and a "CASTROL" ad, and showing destination of "Eaglehawk". Single truck car has SEC roof ad "You'll Cook better electrically" and a roof ad for "B.J. Osborn Plumbing Service" ad. Has City Club Hotel and Plaza Theatre buildings in background. Black and white photograph of SEC No. 31 at the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard St after having an accident. Photo is on the front only of the tram, one cab window smashed, dash canopy lighting cover partly torn off. Crew members - one inside tram, one on outside. Another person standing by the doorway wearing a leather apron. Trams has destination of Grey St. Sebastl" Person looking into tram wearing the leather apron is probably the driver of the Fruit truck that collided with the tram. Published in the Courier on 3/9/1971. 2nd copy added 29/5/05 - in good condition. Hi Res version added 16-12-2015. Agfa plastic mount (blue base, white cover) of a photograph of No. 27 and 30 at Grey St. Loop, possibly on a Sunday as a conductor is changing trams. Note the milk cart to the right of the tram. Photo taken early 1960, as both trams are in the process of being fitted with dash canopy lighting. Both trams have White Horse Whiskey advertisements on the dash panels and No. 27, an Age newspaper advertisement as well. No. 27 has destination of Sebastopol and No. 30 - Lydiard St. Nth. The slide appears to be a copy slide, given the nature of the colour and the additional number WP419. Photographer could be Bill Pearce (WP). Slide rescanned at 3200 dpi 25-10-2020, jpg replaced, tiff file retained. Negative No. N375 and black and white print made by a laser printer (stored in folder) of Ballarat No. 12 in City or Grenville St Loop with Grenville St and Bridge St. in the background. Date thought to be 12/12/1958. Tram has destination of City. Can see the Bucks Head Hotel in the background and the full length of Bridge St., with Victoria St. hill as well. W. Gribble & Co. building on the right hand side of the photograph. Although folder dated 23/2/62, the photo is taken before 12/1960, as tram has not been fitted with dash canopy lights, so date taken as for photograph BA1, Reg. No. 2381 - note angle of shadow. hi res scan made and image updated 23/5/2020. The Big Tree is listed a a tree of State significance on the National Trust's Register of Significant Trees of Victoria for its outstanding size, curious fusion of branches, as an outstanding example of the species and as an important landmark.A photographs of Guildford's Big Tree - a River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis). The tre-es is believed to be one of the largest examples of the species in Victoria, and has been recorded as having a height of 30 metre, a canopy spread of 34 metres, and a trunk circumference of 9.35 metres. The tree was already an ancient giant when white settlers first arrived in the 1840s. On Saturday evening, February 28th 2015, just as dusk was falling, Guildford was hit hard by tornado-like winds, felling the big cottonwood tree down by the river, and tearing limbs from the iconic Big Tree, reducing it by an estimated one third. The debris has been cleared since then and the tree seems to have survived its ordeal, though its size is certainly diminished.big tree, guidlford, river red gum
