Circa 1920's the postcard depicts a pathway and manicured lawns leading to the Beechworth Mental Asylum administration building. The asylum was constructed between 1864 and 1867 to the designs by the Public Works Department (PWD) that was renamed Mayday Hills Mental Asylum. The now decommissioned asylum was cinsidered one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in Victoria and consisted of sixty-seven buildings, one thousand two hundred patients and five hundred staff members. The asylum was one of the first asylums to focus on treatment and rehabilitation instead of institutional confinement. Valentine Series No 1083 The Willows Victoria Park. This photo was possibly taken before the diving tower and change rooms were erected. The Victoria Park name was changed to Cato Park in 1930.Two original Valentine Series and one enlarged black and white photograph of Victoria Park later called Cato Park. The two Valentine Series No 1083 show the willows to the left and buildings hidden by trees in the distance surrounding the lake. Both photographs are of historical interest in Ballarat.The Fernery photograph is of particular interest especially since the Fernery in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens was rebuilt. Valentine Series Postcard, No. 498 looking north along Moorabool St, Geelong with Birney No. 14 approaching the camera on the single line section. The tram has the destination of South (prior to extension from the Barwon River to Belmont in 1927) and is fitted with two trolley poles. There are two other trams in the photograph along with many motor vehicles and horse drawn vehicles - mid 1920's. Moorabool St has centre poles. In the photo are Sully's National Hotel, White Hart Hotel, Leitch Cycles and sports goods and a T&G building (prior to the new one being built?).
