School reader, The Victorian Readers, Eighth Book, Second Edition, 1940
Book is part of a set of readers produced for use in Victorian state schools in the early part of the twentieth century. The readers were in use in schools until the 1960s. This reader was owned and used by Des Howard, a son of Linton's librarian Mrs Ella Howard. It was found with books in the former Linton Free Library collection.Book with cloth and board cover, which has been covered in brown paper. The paper cover appears to have been produced by the (Victorian) State Savings Bank specifically as a textbook cover (and advertisement for the bank). Pages 260 p.Inscribed at top of title page: "Des Howard". On front of brown paper cover: "Reader / [Name] Desmond Howard / [Grade] VII / State [School] Linton 880". A ticket voucher book used on the railway line between Bairnsdale and Orbost which closed in 1987. Escept for special events, passenger trains ceased in 1937 and after that time, passengers wishing to travel by train had to take the good trains and be issued with this ticket. The train guard may have issued these tickets.This item is associated with the history of the Orbost-Bairnsdale railway line and therefore reflects the role that the rail line played in the social and economic history of Orbost.A Victorian Railways ticket voucher book. Ewan Ogilvy, former Melbourne Councillor and also of Community Services Victoria, Inner Urban Ministerial Advisory Committee and Uniting Church's Centre for Urban Research and Action (CURA), was instrumental in social justice approaches to town planning. He and CURA's Social Justice and the City Project funded Port Melbourne community groups protesting against the SCDC development in 1987.
