Published in "The Sun", Wednesday, August 11, 1976, pp 38-39 [Text of article:] A WINDOW ON THE PAST by Roger Sanders. A fascinating window has been opened on the early life of the Eltham district. It is a rare collection of 3,000 perfectly preserved glass plate photograph negatives. The collection is the work of the late Albert Jones, a Diamond Creek orchardist and amateur photographer. About 500 of the negatives have been printed and 100 are on display at Gallery 4, Eltham, as part of the Eltham Festival, which started on Friday. They capture in fine detail rural and village life around Eltham, Hurstbridge, Kangaroo Ground, Yarra Glen and Diamond Valley from 1900 to 1930. While the natural beauty of the district was painted in this period by Arthur Streeton (later Sir Arthur), Tom Roberts and Charles Conder, among others, photography was relatively new. Yet Albert Jones used the new medium to compile a weighty album of pioneers at work, at home, at sport and on holidays. He was at the first Yarra Glen race meeting, early Diamond Valley football matches and photographed soldiers from the district leaving for war. He photographed early gold mines, men with horses laying the Diamond Creek-Hurstbridge rail track and the arrival of the first steam train at Hurstbridge. He took his cameras on holiday around Victoria and the collection includes scenes from St. Kilda and Portsea and many country towns. The Jones collection of negatives was found by Mr A. J. "Ned" Spark, of Balwyn, under a house he bought from Mr Jones' widow. The plates almost went to the tip with a pile of rubbish before Mr Spark realised their potential value. Mr Spark, who is retired, will continue the identification and recording of the photographs when he returns from holidays. The exhibition of the Jones' photographs is open each afternoon until August 21 at Gallery 4, 1016 Main Rd., Eltham. The Geelong Harbour Trust (GHT) was formed in 1905. This seal was used by the Trust Commissioner from 1909-1981 for impressing official documents. It's use was strictly controlled and dictated by the Regulations as contained in the Geelong Harbor Trust Annual Report from 1909. "The common seal of the Commissioner shall be kept under lock and key. Two locks shall be kept by the Chairman of Commissioners and the other of which the Secretary shall have a key. A duplicate key of each lock shall be lodged at such Bank as the Commissioner may direct. The common seal shall be used only by order of the Commissioners" (Regulations, Geelong Harbor Trust, Annual Report 1909). Captain George A. Molland was appointed Harbor Master of the Port (1900-1905) and then Harbor Master of the GHT from 1900-1936 when he retired, aged 88 years. He was replaced by Captain H. Saunders (1936-1950) followed by Captain D.G. Hancox.The seal is significant for its connections to physical changes made to the Geelong waterfront by the Harbor Trust from 1905. The Official Seal was a highly regarded formal object that was used for nearly 80 years by the Trust. The object is significant for its historic connections to the Harbor Masters and Commissioners who used it as part of official communication from the Trust.A seal used for impressing official stationary from the Geelong Harbor Trust. Object is made of cast iron, brass and steel with a large winding handle, screwed to a wooden board and painted black. The postcards are evidence of the interest the gardens held as a subject for postcard publishers. The text and images provide a snapshot into fashions, social interests and concerns of the time. The professionally produced images provide a pictorial history of Gardens including changing planting styles, various structures and features of the Gardens eg the aviary, cannons, the fountain, the second Curator’s Lodge and gates. The images offer an opportunity to compare garden vistas with the present day. This postcard is evidence of the placement of two of the cannons relocated from Fort Gellibrand in 1906 and that they were in place in the Gardens in 1924. They were removed from the Gardens in the 1960s. These same cannons remain a feature on the Williamstown waterfront in 2013. The image also shows the original Elm Avenue plantings. A sepia scene looking west towards statue of Alfred Thomas Clark, with cannons on either side of statue pointing east down what is known as the Palm Avenue. The statue is surrounded by a white fence consisting of posts and a top rail. The top of the statue is hidden by the branches of the elm trees. It appears that the elms are in the process of either losing their leaves or new leaf growth. A cactus plant can be seen beneath the lower branches of the elm tree of the right closest to the camera.
