The jumper was donated to the National Wool Museum in early 2019 from the Geelong Football Club. The jumper is the fourth in the 'country game' range. The oringal 2016 jumper was designed to commemorate a 'country game' against the Essendon Football Club prior to the start of the 2016 AFL Season. The four themes depicted in that jumper included: livestock, wool, wine and wheat. the 2016 jumper can be viewed as entry 7613.White sleeveless Geelong football jumper. The jumper has a large number 4 printed on the back. On the front of the Jumper it has the words Cotton On printed bellow the neck line as well as the emblems for Powercor Country round, the AFL Ford and the Geelong Football Club.Wording. David Andrew was born in Castlemaine in 1866 and moved with his family to Bendigo in 1871. He took over his fathers auctioneering business which was situated on the corner of Hargreaves and Williamson Streets in 1893. David Andrew married Myra Swan McIntyre in 1888 and they had two children. After the death of Myra in 1892 aged 27 he married Myra's younger sister Clare and together they had a further two children. David Andrew was a prominent member of the old Bendigo Caledonian Society, Captain of the Bendigo Fire Brigade, a member of the Bendigo Masonic Lodge and for many years Secretary of the Easter Fair. He served as a Councillor from 1904 - 1925 and Mayor 1909 - 10 and 1913 - 14.Event program for the Mayor's Ball. Gold and purple print on white and cream card. Established in 1924 the White Hills Football Club joined the Bendigo District Football Association in 1924 and in that first year played in the grand final, loosing by 6 points. In 1933 the club went into recess, reforming after WWII in 1948 and again joined the BDA, wining premierships in 1950, 1952, 1957 and 1958. In 1960 the competition was renamed the Golden City FL and the premierships came in 1963, 1968, 1969, 1971, and 1980. In 1981 the Golden City FL became the second division of the Bendigo Football League and White Hills competed in the lower division. White Hills opted to transfer to the Heathcote District Football League in the early 1980's and in its early years had one of its most successful periods, winning a premiership in 1988. This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr. Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scotts Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. Toby jugs date back to the mid-1760s in Staffordshire, England. The most common belief is that Toby Jugs were named for an 18th-century Yorkshire man who got the nickname Toby Fillpot after he drank 2,000 pints of Yorkshire stingo (ale). Original jugs usually showed a seated figure but over time they evolved to be character mugs, often featuring well known personalities. Simon Cellarer was the subject of a 19th century English folksong. The keys on the handle are those to his cellar, full of great wines and ales. He was always good for standing a drink for his friends. It was issued from 1936 to 1960.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is representative of a style of pottery items popular in the 1930s to 1970s in Australian households.A ceramic Toby Jug depicting the character "Simon the Cellarer". This image is one from a series of portraits taken by Rob Elliott to record the character of the Border District through the faces if its identities. This photo shows Charles Henry “Mick” Morris in the Morris cellar at Mia Mia near Rutherglen, Victoria. Charles Henry “Mick” Morris was born in Rutherglen, Victoria on 1st July 1928, son of Charles Tempest George Morris and Daisy Chambers. The Morris winery was started by Mick’s great grandfather, George Francis Morris who arrived in Australia in 1852. He immediately set off for the goldfields but found more profit from selling supplies to the goldfields. He purchased land in Rutherglen in 1859. By 1894 he had the biggest cellars in Australia. Mick Morris is a 4th generation wine maker. He was educated at Gooramadda Primary School, then at Rutherglen Higher Elementary School before attending Scotch College in Melbourne. He became the first member of his family to gain a university education, gaining a Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Melbourne in 1950 before completing an Oenology Course at Roseworthy Agricultural College in South Australia. Mick returned to Mia Mia in 1952 where his first role was working in the vineyard. By the end of 1953 he had become the “semi-official” winemaker at Mia Mia. From that time his career as a widely recognised winemaker went from strength to strength, winning many prestigious awards. Mick is recognised as a pioneer of the Durif grape variety. In 1993 Mick’s son, David became a 5th generation winemaker. Morris is famous for producing some of the world’s finest fortified wines. Away from the wine industry Mick has a strong interest in sport, particularly football. Since 1933, the Morris Medal for the Best and Fairest Player in the Ovens and Murray League has been awarded annually. This award was instigated by Charles Hughes Morris, Mick’s grandfather. Mick also played in the league. Morris Wines of Rutherglen were purchased by Casella Family Brands in 2016. This image depicts a renowned winemaker of Rutherglen who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of the Australian wine industry. Costa’s Wine Cafe was once one of the best known landmarks in Wodonga. It was near the corner of High Street and Lawrence, across the road from where the water tower was later built. Mr. Bernardo Costa came to Australia from Switzerland, arriving in Sydney in 1857. In 1882 he moved to Wodonga and conducted his boot sale and repair business He applied for a Wine License in December 1886. In 1908 B Costa advertised that he had rebuilt his premises, which “affords the best and most comfortable accommodation to the travelling public”. For a while it was known as Wodonga Swiss Wine Café. After Bernardo’s death in 1915 the wine cafe and accommodation at the rear was run by his three daughters, Annie, Angela and Gertrude. In 1941 the Misses Costa sold their business and freehold to Mrs. J Adams who died just six years later. It was then run by her son Pat Adams, and after his demise his wife ran the business. Frank Walsh was running it as Walsh’s Wine Café by 1951. The Wine Café was closed in 1963 having been purchased by Woolworths and was demolished to build their new supermarket on the site.These images represent an early business in Wodonga . 2 black and white photos of the buildings of A. These labels come from the business of Giffen Russell and Company, a wine and spirits store in Fairy Street, Warrnambool. Giffen Russell commenced business in 1878 and was joined by Joseph Powell as a partner in 1881. The business of Giffen Russell and Co. was operating in the early 1900s and still went by that name in the 1940s with H.L.Lynch the proprietor at that time. Johann Carl Pohl (1824-1/6/1906) came to Bendigo in the 1850's. He was originally a butcher in White Hills but then planted about 12 acres of vines at Emu Creek. He was a very successful winemaker, winning prizes throughout Australia and overseas for his red wines. This certificate is from the 1873 Vienna World's Fair, again for his wine. In 1853, Bendigo Miners protested against the 30 shilling miners licence the had to pay the government. They wore red ribbons to show their protest and shopkeepers hung red ribbons outside their premises in support. Thousands of miners signed a petition to Governor LaTrobe to no avail. A protest gathering in Pall Mall marched to the Government camp on Camp Hill but this was a peaceful event again to no real avail.Various documents. The topics are: 1. These four pages from the Australasian newspaper of January 1904 contain three pages of black and white photographs of Warrnambool. These include photographs of golfers, both men and women, the Hopkins River, the Ozone Hotel, Sheldrick’s Brewery and Wilmot in his mia mia. The photographs have been taken by Jordan Studios, Warrnambool. This studio, a prominent one in Warrnambool, was operated by Joseph Jordan and his son Arthur from 1890 to the 1930s.The accompanying text in the ‘Australasian’ appears to come from a booklet published about that time which was produced as an advertising tool for the Ozone Hotel and its proprietor, Thomas Randall. The Ozone Hotel, originallly called the Grand Ozone Coffee Palace, was opened in 1890 as a temperance hotel. Thomas Randall was the proprietor of the Ozone Hotel from 1894 to 1907 and it then had a wine licence. In 1920 the building was known as Hotel Mansions and in 1923 it gained a full liquor licence. The building was destroyed by fire in 1929. These newspaper pages are of importance as some of the photographs have not been found elsewhere and give a good picture of Warrnambool and district at the beginning of the 20th century. These are four pages from the Australasian newspaper of 1904. The pages contain black and white photographs and text. John Matchett was born in Corbrackey, Ireland in 1828. His Wholesale and Family Grocers started in 1857. It was on the Corner of Hargreaves and Edward Streets, Bendigo. It was known as the BELFAST STORES, HARGREAVES-STREET WEST SANDHURST. After his death in1903, Robert Matchett carried on the Grocery and Produce Business.Black and white photograph on grey board. Row of brick 2 storey shops with verandas over footpath. Windows on second story have columns each side and curved and painted pediments over. On back of photograph is written: Matchett's Corner at Bath Lane end of City Club Hotel. Block of buildings at Charing Cross. Demolished - replaced by Fountain Plaza block. Set of five colour prints of tram W5 725 derailed in High St Kew during track reconstruction work at the corner of Derby St Kew. Tram was bound for North Balwyn when it derailed on a section of track that had been dismantled, possibly when it hit or dislodged a track crossover. Tram has advertisements for Bonds, Tollana Wines, Park Drive cigarettes, .1 - tram derailed at the top of the hill down to Kew Cemetery. .2 - with workmen setting up the tram and place on the temporary transport wheels. The second axle box towards the drop centre is on an angle compared to the nearest axle box. .3 - close up view of the damaged truck. .4 - General view of the scene looking back towards Kew Junction. .5 - view of the damaged crossover section.
