Photograph - Codling Collection 01 - The Finishing Touch (previously Arnold’s Produce Store), c1980s
Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century. The Finishing Touch, homeware and gifts on the corner of what is now High and Elgin Street. Including John Penny’s Sewing Centre and sewing machine service. At various times it has also been occupied by Elders Real Estate and Jim Matthew's cycles A "Malvern Star" sign is still visible in this photo. It was also previously A. Arnold & Co, General Merchant. In 1924, Arthur Arnold and his father Wilhelm Arnold had established a general store in High Street, near the water tower, but in 1931–32 they moved to new premises in High Street on the corner of what is now known as Elgin Boulevard. In 1933-34 they widened the frontage of the shop and added new premises at the rear for the sale of produce. As customer debt mounted during the depression, it became difficult for Arthur and Wilhelm to re-stock the shop, so they enticed customers into paying their accounts by rewarding them with a small individual cream or milk jug upon payment. The jugs were made in Czechoslovakia and displayed the war memorial, water tower and bandstand from Woodland Grove, Wodonga. The Arnolds continued to trade until they finally closed their store in 1950. Wilhelm Arnold was a brother of J G Arnold, whose business ultimately became the present-day Arnold’s Fruit Market, Wodonga. wodonga businesses, high st wodonga, the finishing touch, a arnold general merchant -

The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, 02/12/2005
This series of photos all depict Burke Museum curator Beryl Witkowski. The invitation was created in 2005, the other photographs seem to be throughout Beryl Witkowski's career, however it is not possible to determine exactly what date they are from. The photographs show Beryl in front of the main museum building, standing beside exhibits, receiving awards and holding antiques. This series of photographs are centred around the Burke Museum curator Beryl Witkowski. The collection consists of an invitation that features mid-2000s photo editing and numerous photographs of Beryl throughout her career. The invitation provides artistic/ aesthetic significance for its interesting photo editing technique, as photo editing was becoming increasingly popular during this time. Socially, the collection of photographs are significant to the community of Beechworth and to the Burke Museum. As a curator Beryl would have had significant influence over the running and display of the museum, therefore having photographic evidence is a way for the community to reminisce and connect. Some coloured and some black and white photographs printed on paper.7599.1 Obverse: You are invited to Beryl's Bash, 'for her sins, 30 year's at the Burke' 2 December, 7pm-10pm, 2005 at Robert O'Hara Burke Memorial Museum, RSVP to Burke Museum, 03 57 28 8067 / 7599 7599.1 Reverse: and Christmas Party at the Burke Memorial Museum on 2 December, 2005 7-10pm, RSVP to the Burke by 29th November / 7599 7599.2 Obverse: Library Burke / Burke Museum / Open 10am- 5pm 7599.2 Reverse: Burke Museum / Robert O'Hara Burke Memorial [Mus]eum / Exhibitions / Notices / 1856 7599.3 Obverse: Newsagent / Est. 1853 / (illegible) invitation, christmas party, staff party, burke museum, beechworth, beryl witkowski, 2000s, employees, curator, celebration, 2000s photo editing -

signal lamps
Possibly used in the Orbost district. Railway lamps of this kind were hand signalling lamps used by train guards, shunters and sometimes signalmen and station staff. They could signal the locomotive crew at night to let them know what to do (move forward/move backward/right-of-way) when leaving a station, goods yard or siding. Railway lamps of this kind were significant railway items in their period of use as essential tools to the safe-working operations of the railway. Two railway signal lamps. These are kerosene burning lamps made of metal and painted red. Both lamps have carrying handles at the top. .1 has a green glass lens and .2 has a red glass lens. signals lamps communication railway transport kerosene-burning -

Document, Receipt WCC
This receipt issued to the Warrnambool Club by the Shire of Warrnambool is for ‘materials’ supplied. It is not known what type of material the Warrnambool Club was buying but it could not have been very important as the total cost was only four shillings. The Warrnamnbool Club was (and is) in the City of Warrnambool. This club was a gentlemen’s club established in 1873 and the building that still exists today was built in 1877. This receipt has little significance as it is a 1951 purchase by the Warrnambool Club for an unknown item of little value. This is a small green receipt slip issued by the Shire of Warrnambool in 1951 to the Warrnambool Club for materials received. The paper has printed black lines and handwritten information (pencil) and has been torn from a larger receipt book, perhaps leaving a copy for the Shire records. ‘Shire of Warrnambool, received from W’bool Club, the sum of four shillings, E.C.Fairbridge, Rate Collector, 24/10/51’.warrnambool club, shire of warrnambool -
