Historical information
The gate in these photos is the only remaining one of 17 towers that were placed strategically on the town walls. It was called the Buttergate and located near to St John's Gate which levied a toll on the butter entering the town, the levy being used to support the Carmelite Monastery, founded in 1256 in what is now Mary Street, Drogheda.
