Harrison, Mayor of the City of Ballaarat, dated 2nd May 1932 of the "brave deed" of Mr. Charles Foster, ESCo driver who rescued a small boy from in front of a tramcar. Council complimented him on his bravery and recommended a letter be sent. Has been a typed original, has number 334 in top right hand corner. Newspaper clipping - untitled The Sun, Wednesday, Feb 5, 1975 Photo and text of new tramways bus 10 new orange tramway buses have begun service in the metropolitan area, 20 more being assembled in Sydney and should be in operation later in 1975. Built in England by Leyland and cost $32,000 each. Bus driver Bruce McRae of Thornbury said easier to handle, very manoeuvrable in heavy traffic and have very acute turning circle. The photograph shows VR tram 25 with uniformed tram crew standing on the ground beside the driver's cab entrance with the driver holding a hand rail. On the left is part of a chemist shop verandah and a picket fence. VR 25 originally operated on the broad gauge track from St Kilda Station to Brighton, then in 1919 was converted to standard gauge to operate on the Sandringham to Black Rock line. The 1971 flood was the the worst flood on record. At Jarrahmond it was at least 11 metres and up to one and a half kilometres wide on the flats causing enormous damage to the flood plain. Records say that "The brown floodwater stain in Bass Strait could be seen from passing airliners." Considerable damage was done to railway infrastructure, roads and farms. More information from the APRIL, 2008 newsletter by John Phillips. (see orbosthistory.com.au) The railway line was destroyed and was not expected to be opened for a fortnight. Orbost was cut off by 50 square miles of Snowy River floodwater. These photographs are pictorial records of the 1971 floods which was a significant event in the history of Orbost.
