Tool - Seed Drill, Mitchell, 1922
One of a number of harvesting and cultivating machines made by Mitchell and Co during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the 1922 seed drill comprises wooden seed and fertilizer boxes, a release lever and caste-iron rear seat. The seed drill was pulled by a horse and operated with a plough attachment placed at the front to cut the soil. A seated operator used the lever to release seed and fertiliser onto the ground. The seed drill enabled seed to be planted at a constant depth and spacing. White press wheels at the rear of the seed drill would lightly compact soil and cover the seed.Horse drawn seeder faded red with white wheels suitable for large seeds eg. corn, beans, peas.churchill island, farm machinery, planting, seed drill, horse drawn, mitchell brand -

Duke's stem pessary associated with Dr Frank Forster
Part of the collection of Dr Frank Forster. The philosophy of this object was to keep the uterus dilated. It was commonly believed at this time that the cervix was the cause of dysmenorrhoea. The stem pessary was an object used to rectify uterine displacements - either anteversion or retroversion. The device consisted of a stem which is introduced into the uterus, the stem was then attached to an ovoid flange or ball, on which the cervix uteri then rested. Connected to this flange was an external part or wire frame, which in turn was attached at one extremity to a flat tubular portion, passing into the vagina. This was then fixed to the intrauterine portion. The wire frame was then made to press on to the pubis, so that the pessary could be kept in position in utero.Pessary, Duke's stem design. Metal pessary with hollow stem, and a rounded flange at one end. The flange has eight small holes surrounding the central hole. The stem is flexible and is made from coiled metal which has then been attached (perhaps by soldering) to the flange.pessary, intrauterine device -

Photograph - Postcard, Edith Cavell Memorial, Brussells
Edith Louisa Cavell (4 December 1865 – 12 October 1915) was a British nurse and patriot. She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from all sides without distinction and in helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during World War I, for which she was arrested. She was subsequently court-martialled, found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad. Her execution received worldwide condemnation and extensive press coverage. black and white photograph, first half 20th century
This photograph shows Ina Warren with Jack warren, Linda Warren and Cora Lynn. The photographer was Warren, Helena (1871-1962) who was a self-taught photographer who became both the local press correspondent and a producer of humorous trompe l'oeil postcard images. Helena Warren was a thirty-two year old settler living on a small mixed farm with her husband, William, at Newmerella, near Orbost in Gippsland, Victoria, when she bought her first camera, an Austral Box quarter-plate. Her family says she was entirely self-taught, like many women photographers who started out with nothing but the instructions on the packets of film and chemicals. In over fifty years practice she graduated from the total novice, who opened all her first mail order plates in bright sunlight and ruined them, to a competent photographer who became both the local press correspondent and an inveterate producer of humorous trompe l’oeil postcard images. Helena Francis Warren (nee McKeown) was married to William John Warren and lived in Newmerella. She supplied the photos for the Back-To-Orbost celebration book in 1937 and also designed the Back-To-Orbost badge. She was known for her soft toy making. Clothing - Children's clothing, 1944
Two items of newborn clothing dating to 1944. The first item is a dress and the second is a singlet. Both items are made from wool and are in new, unused condition. The clothing was owned by Mrs L. Brawdrup and was donated to the National Wool Museum in 2022 by Lila Gore.Clothing item one is a cream woven dress. It is finished at the sleeves, neck, and hem with a white lace trim. The trim is formed from a thread that has a metallic gleam, presumably cotton. The dress is styled under the neck with a stitched patterned of frills and flowers in the same white metallic thread. The dress gathers under the armpits, similar in style to a dirndl. At the rear, the dress is loosened and fastened by 3 press stud buttons in an opening at the centre. Clothing item two is a cream woven singlet. It is finished at the sleeves, neck, and hem with a white lace trim. The trim is formed from a thread that has a metallic gleam, presumably cotton.
