Functional object - Section Staff, Electric Supply Co. of Vic (ESCo), "Pleasant St Gardens - Loop Nth"
Used as a means of authorising a tramcar to have sole use of the track between the named points to avoid head-on collisions. Safeworking object - known as a section staff. Not known when made, but in use, until the introduction of the electric signalling in the mid 1930's by the SEC. See also Reg Items 934 and 988 for details of use and other examples are at 1851, 52 and 53, 2473 and 4444 to 4448 , 4996 and 4497 and Reg item 934 and 988 for articles on the safeworking systems.Demonstrates aspects of Safeworking on the Ballarat Tramway system used to c1936 when replaced by electric signals. Yields Information about the operation of Ballarat's trams and safeworking procedures.Cast brass item with a flat part recessed section with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface and a flat section underneath, flush with the outside edges in which the words "PLEASANT ST - GARDENS LOOP NTH. Gives run details for 6 Conductor runs Monday to Saturday and 4 on Sunday. Gives a 20min service on lines on Sundays and 20 min service at the end of the day. See Reg. Item 2992 for Mt Pleasant and Victoria St. runs. Each run details where the driver/conductor would sign on, time, the trips, meal breaks, finish time and the total time of the shift. Ephemera - Special event program, Second Welcome and Presentations to St Kilda's (1914) ANZACS, 1919
The first civic welcome and ceremony of presentations was held on 4 December 1918. This second welcome and presentation, to a further group of returned soldiers of St. Kilda, was arranged to take place earlier than 14 May 1919 but had to be postponed because of restrictions on the holding of public meetings during the influenza epidemic. Cream coloured card, printed in red, blue and brown, folded. Paper insert, printed in brown and stapled to cover, contains details of the program for the evening and names of those presented.
