Robert Oswald HENDERSON had previous service in the Militia dating from 1899 with the 67th Battalion. He enlisted in the AIF with the rank of Major as 2IC in the 38th Bn on 1.5.1916 at the age of 41 years. Embarked for England 20.6.1916, embark for France 22.11.1916, promoted to Lt Col to command the 39th Bn 15.2.1917, hospital 17.9.1917 with Defective vision, appears to a have rejoined his unit same day, WIA 29.3.1918 GSW to left thumb, rejoin unit 13.6.1918, KIA 29.9.1918 near Bony on the Hindenburg Line. Buried by the Rev W.A.Moore on 1.10.1918. He was awarded the DSO 18.1.1918 and Mentioned in Despatches 25.5.1918. The Beehive Store was a major Department Store in Pall Mall Bendigo.Photo of the Australian War Grave in France of Lt Col. R O HENDERSON DSO 39Bn. KIA. Headstone reads "Placed here in Loving Memory by/ BEEHIVE STAFF Bendigo". Instrument - BUGLE, GERMAN WW1, Enemy Forces, 1914-1918
Ref See "FLEMING". 1. THIS COAT OF ARMS WAS ONE OF THE KINGDOM OF PRUSSIA'S. The sword and the mace pattern was used between about 1803 - 1898. (It was superseded by a sword and orb with a cross surmounted on the ord). This second pattern lasted til 1918 with the fall of the House of Hohenzouern). 2. CHR REISSER was a well known instrument maker in those days. 3. ULM is a town in Wurtemberg, Germany.This is a brass bugle. On top is a crest, it is set in a raised circle. It features an eagle wearing a crown - wings spread. One talon has a sword, the other talon has what appears to be a mace. A Luther Collage Year 10 History essay which documents a visit to several war memorials and researches the history of James Byrne, a name on the Mitcham War Memorial. He had enlisted in 1915 and had been discharged dur to epilepsy. He reinlisted in 1916 and was sent to England where he died in camp. The reason given wassuffocation due to the influence of drink. The 67th (Bendigo) Infantry was the local Militia Infantry Unit from 1912-1918. It's members came from Bendigo up to Deniliquin and Bendigo up to Kerang - Swan Hill areas.This is a leather bound book (Manuscript). The type of leather is called "old goat leather". The title and words are gold embossed. It is fastened with 4 brass Chicago screw binders. Inside are pages of A4. size. The history section is of 165 pages - text, images, black and white and colour. Framed print, Menin Gate at Midnight
The original art piece was painted by Australian artist Will Longstaff after he attended the unveiling ceremony of the Menin Gate memorial at the entrance of the Belgian town of Ypres in 1927. The memorial is inscribed with the names of 54,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers killed in Flanders with no known grave. More than 6000 are Australians. The album is a collection by Phil Harper obviously from a tour in 1965 to Eygpt, France and Turkey , this would have co incited with the 50 years of “ANZAC”. “Bunty Lawrence was regarded by Phil Harper as his “second Dad”. The glass plate photos are of ANZAC, dead Turkish/Australian soldiers, burials, ANZAC Armistice,, all have 1915 hand written on. Book, Glimses of Sir Albert Coates, 1998
Albert Coates was born in Ballarat, Victoria and Served with the AIF during WW1. He gained degrees of Doctor of Medicin2 1916 and Master of Surgery in 1927. In 1941 he left for Singapore as a Lt Col Senior Surgeon of the 10th AGH. Lt Coates subsequently became a POW and spent a period of time at 55 kilo camp, Burma Railway. This book is a brief history of Albert Coates who served with the AIF in WW1 and WW2, he became a POW during WW2 and was located to the Burma Railway.
