The Orbost Education Centre is a community based not-for-profit local organisation. It has been in operation since 1976. The programs respond to the needs of the community and short courses are delivered throughout the year for people of all ages and backgrounds. The basis is promoting learning, connectedness and belonging. It is supported by funding from the community, state government and non-government organisations. TAFE offered adult education to those new out of school and mothers coming out of motherhood as well as others. Framed Photo of H.M.A.S. VENDETTA Daring Class Destroyer
HMAS Vendetta was one of three Daring-class destroyers built for and operated by the Royal Australian Navy. The destroyer was built by Williamstown Naval Dockyard and entered service in 1958. During her early career, Vendetta was deployed to the Far East Strategic Reserve on multiple occasions. In 1965 and 1966, the destroyer undertook deterrence patrols during the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation. Along with several runs escorting the troop transport HMAS Sydney to South Vietnam, from late 1969 to early 1970 Vendetta was assigned to combat operations and became the only Australian-built warship to serve in a shore bombardment role during the Vietnam War. he ship underwent a two-year modernisation from 1971 to 1973, and in December 1974 was one of thirteen RAN warships involved in Operation Navy Help Darwin after Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin. Several more deployments were made to the Far East, up until 1978. In October 1979, the destroyer was decommissioned, and served as a parts hulk for sister ship HMAS Vampire. Domestic object - Plate, W. H. GRINDLEY & Co. Ltd, 1914-1925
The Maker’s Mark stamped on the back of this plate, a green laurel wreath with “W. H. Gringley & Co. Ltd, England” below, was used by the company between 1914-1925, according to Kroker and Goundry, authors of a paper “ARCHAEOLOGICAL MONITORING AND MITIGATION OF THE ASSINIBOINE RIVERFRONT QUAY”. The company used different Marks at other times during their operation. The design on this plate is transferware. The company used this more economical process of adding a transfer rather than employing artists to handprint them onto their dinnerware. William Henry Grindley and Alfred Meakin established the company at Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, in 1880. The company produced their wares for export to countries that included Australia.This ceramic plate is an example of dinnerware imported from England. The plate was made between 1914 and 1925 . The popular 'bird of paradise' design on the plate is an example of transferware, which made decorative dinnerware more affordable. China plate, earthenware, round, off-white colour with fine blue rim and three transfer decals spaced around the rim. Decals each have a bird of paradise on a flowering branch. The centre of the plate is plain. The maker’s stamp is an open green laurel wreath enclosing a decorative horizontal line, above the name. Made by W H Grindley & Co. The xray demonstration was given after the opening of the Mining at Metallurgical Laboratory at the Ballarat School of Mines. "Arrangements for the conversazione in Connection with the opening of the new metallurgical and mining laboratory at the School of Mines are in a forward state, and the inaugural ceremony pro mises to be a most auspicious one. Mr William Fox, of Melbourne, has accepted an invitation to be present, and he will give an X Ray demonstration. Dr Fox's achievements in this direction are well known, and the apparatus he is possessed of is very complete. During the evening Mr W. C. Little and Mr Bishop will give selections on the Pianola, and besides this there will be a first-class graphophone in operation." DH Tiger Moth Aircraft were used by the RAAF as elementary trainers in the empire air training scheme of 1940-44 during which time Australia trained 27,387 aircrew members. Although primarily employed as trainers, a few Tiger Moths were camouflaged and used operationally with army co-operation units in New Guinea. The Tiger Moth remained in RAAF service for almost 17 years, and several Tiger Moths were also transferred to the RAN after World War II. Eventually, on 9 January 1957, the last 10 RAAF Tiger Moths were flown from Point Cook to Tocumwal for disposal.The de Havilland Tiger Moth aircraft is a 1930's biplane which was a primary trainer aircraft used to train over 27,000 aircrew in Australia during the Second World War.Black frame with gold insert and cream mounting containing black and white photo of several planes in the background and numerous aircrew members in the foreground. These pioneering efforts were directed by Geoff Weste, and later technical experts like Rex Philpot, John Whitehead, Charlie Reisinger and many others who designed, built and repaired most of the radio equipment. Carpet samples created by Godfrey Hirst, a carpet mill whose history spans back to 1865 when the Victorian Woollen and Cloth Manufacturing Company began operations in Geelong and was purchased in the 1890s by the man Godfrey Hirst. Godfrey Hirst’s entrepreneurial skills and knowledge of the industry led to the great success which saw the company expand in multiple forms over the next century and a half. Today, thousands of metres of carpet are produced by Godfrey Hirst every day, and their flooring can be found in millions of homes. These 6 carpet samples date from the early 1990s and each have a unique colour pattern and design.Each carpet sample is made with a pile fibre that is 100% wool. The primary backing of the carpet is a woven polypropylene with a secondary backing a woven jute. Carpet 8102.1's colour name is Slate. It has a dark grey background with a red and blue diagonal stripe. The pattern repeats in a 10cm x 11.5cm block. Carpet 8102.2’s colour name is Terracotta. It is a mostly block pink colour with no repeating pattern. It has occasional flicks of grey. Carpet 8102.3’s colour name is Arctic Night. It has white, light blue and grey colours repeating one after another in a diagonal line. Carpet 8102.4’s colour name is Ivory. It has a brown background with a cream colour diamond. The pattern repeats in a 15cm x 15cm block. Carpet 8102.5’s colour name is Glenwood. It has a thin darker green and lighter green horizontal stripe spanning its entire width. These stripes repeat the height of the carpet. Carpet 8105.6’s colour name is also Ivory. It has a brown background with a cream colour leaf pattern. Workers' inferno: The untold story of the Esso workers 20 years after the explosion, 2018
This book an exposition of a workplace tragedy at an Esso operation (a subsidiary of Exxon Corporation) at Longford, Victoria in 1998. A piece of processing equipment exploded and caught fire. Two workers were killed and many others were injured. The fire burned for two days. Gas supply to most customers (apart from essential services) was cut off for a significant period of time. A Royal Commission was subsequently established, during which Esso sought to minimise its own responsibility for the incident and cast blame upon the individual operators. Photo shows the Tramcar allocation board - in the Geelong depot. Shows the four bogie cars in operation or available on the day the photograph was taken. Shows that some of the Meadowbank-built trams and bogie trams had already left the depot. One of a set of photos was taken between 15/2/1956 and 3/3/1956 when services operated only between Belmont and North before the final closure of the Belmont route on 25/31956 and that bogie tram 31 is not shown on the board, having gone to Ballarat on 15/2/1956 - see item 5554. John J. Huntly appears to have been the only licensee of the Royal Oak Hotel, built in 1858. Commercial Hotel Bank Street Port Fairy Formerly known as The Royal Oak and then renamed The Royal Oak in the 1990's. A verandah was added in 1900. Around 1877 the hotel various rooms for visiting doctors and a dentist. Dr Berncastle who was associated with the Sydney Eye Infirmary performed several operations there on those suffering from cataracts. It was the meeting place for the Port Fairy Freemasons, before their lodge was built in James Street and all local sporting clubs at one time or another. Functional object - Victorian Railways Oil Can/Feeder
The Victorian Railways oil can/feeder was used to oil various parts of engines of trains as part of the maintenance of trains. This would have been carried out by employees in the 'Rolling Stock Branch' of Victorian Railways, which included the maintenance and operation of locomotives and rolling stock. It was donated by a resident of Wodonga, and the Wodonga train line and train station opened in November 1873 when the section of the line from Wangaratta to Wodonga was completed. Quotes Paul Stephen-Daly about the proposals, discussions with the Government, Minister Peter Batchelor and the story of the first tram. Notes that he along with his business partner, John Murphy. Twenty eight page book, centre stapled, plus stippled blue paper covers titled "Australia's First Electric Tram" written and published by John Kinmont Moir in 1940. Inside front cover has an inscription "With Compliments J. K Moir" in ink. Has a reproduction of the poster advertising the tramway, a map, foreword written by J.K. Moir about Mr. H. J. Hilton who operated the tramway, the birth of the tramway, the company that was formed to operate it, , a sample ticket, opening, operation, timetable, reminiscences of H. J. Hilton. Titled "Instruction Pamphlet S-100, Air Brake and Safety Car Control Equipment", published July 1924 by the Safety Car Devices Co. St Louis. Includes the M28 Brake valve. Describes in detail the rules for operation, parts, description, M28 Brake Valves, Maintenance, Practical car tests, hints, defects. The 9 drawings at the rear of the document give detail arrangements of the piping and control equipment. Book scanned into three sections.
