The 19th of May marks the anniversary of the turning of the first sod of the outfall sewer. In 1888, a Royal Commission into Melbourne’s public health led to an ambitious plan to construct a sewerage system of underground pipes, sewers and drains to carry sewage from homes and factories to a sewage treatment farm. The commission also supported the establishment of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW), the authority that would build the sewerage system and manage Melbourne’s water supply. Legacy have many programs to send young junior legatees on activities, camps and outings. The photo shows a junior legatee, Declan Deasy with a sack on his shoulder. It was used in an newspaper article in 1990. It said Declan was going to be part of a pilgrimage to Gallipoli to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Anzac landing with surviving veterans. He was the Junior Legatee chosen as Victorian Representative for the trip. The Federal Government-funded $1 million 11-day trip included a dawn service on Anzac Day. It was stored with other photos of Junior Legatees at camps from the 1980s and 1990s. This framed certificate was presented to J. G. Boyes in recognition for his many years of membership and service to the Bacchus Marsh Lodge of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows. The certificate was presented at a social evening held at the Bacchus Marsh Mechanics Hall on Saturday 10 September 1938. The social was held to mark the 70th anniversary of the Bacchus Marsh Lodge for the Grand United Order of Oddfellows. The Answer is a newsletter in magazine format that is sent to the widows that are helped by Melbourne Legacy. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. This edition contains an article on the preparations for the 100th anniversary with Ken Tsirigotis going to Europe. Also the Brisbane Ranges youth camp, the Disability Rec Day, and the Widows' Remembrance Day high tea and the Torch Society Luncheon. The department of Veterans Affairs organised for an Australian contingent to attend the 75th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings in April 1990. Legacy was asked to nominate 8 junior legatees to be included. This document outlines the itinerary and contains the written accounts of the trip from the 8 junior legatees. The medal was presented to James Boyd, first Dux of Ballarat College in 1868 for his excellence in the Christmas Examinations. James passed his matriculation exams in the same year at 14 years of age. Known at school as Boyd 'Major', James went on to practise as a solicitor at Port Fairy. James attended many school functions throughout his life. Old Collegians re-presented this medal to James during the school's 50th anniversary celebration. The medal was re-presented in a silver plated box inscribed with the school crest and motto and the words 'Re-presented to / JAMES BOYD / December 1918 / on the anniversary of his Duxship of / BALLARAT COLLEGE / from Old Collegians. The re-boxed medal was presented to James Boyd at Speech Night 1918. A recod of this event states, 'At the conclusion of the prize list for the year Principal Mr A S M Polson announced - 'Dux of the College 1868 - James Boyd'. When My Boyd arose from where he had been sitting amongst the boys, he met with a tremendous ovation. he was cheered again and again, the College boys sang their Jubilee song with the refrain, 'Ah, me! Ah, me! merrily we sang with glee / Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty years ago, Oh!'Significant, unique record of the school committment to academic excellence. A recording made by H.R.H. Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh for Legacy Week in 1973 so that could be broadcast on TV. 1973 was the 50th Anniversary of Legacy. The text of the Prince's television message is: 'This is the 50th Anniversary of the foundation of Legacy which grew from some 14 members in Melbourne to more than 6,000 throughout Australia and now looks after 85,000 widows and 34,000 children of deceased ex-servicemen. This is a remarkable achievement and I think that Legacy is well known all over Australia for the very valuable work which it does for the widows of ex-servicemen and their children. I think that people have gone off to war and they have sacrificed themselves for things they believe in but they are always anxious, most anxious, about the people that they leave behind - their wives and their children. It's possible, of course, to set cup Government organisation to look after them, and to provide for them, but it needs something more than that. It needs the relationship which has gone because the father is no longer there and this is really the purpose of Legacy - to provide that essential personal element in looking after the widows of the men who went off to war and their children. Norwood Secondary Teachers College teachers aimed to increase student awareness of the war years in several ways. This is the only copy, as this edition was never published.64 sheets. This edition of the Williamstown High School magazine was never published. This is an unfinished production copy of page proofs. It commemorates the 80th anniversary of the school and includes Principal's message, student work, many photographs, sports report, teacher farewells, Wind Orchestra trip to Canberra report and other camp reports. A special supplement is also included which has interviews with past students and teachers. Each page is mounted on cardboard and quality of images is not high. It comes complete with spelling mistakes, poor quality photos and quite a bit of empty space. Framed commemoration piece about Legatee Oriel John Grattan, born 19 September 1894 in West Melbourne. Served in 103rd Battery AIS in the Great War. Served as a Legatee from 10 March 1939. Awarded fifty-year certificate as a Legatee on 10 March 1989. Possibly made to commemorate Legatee Grattan's 50 years of service to Melbourne Legacy. Legatee Grattan was usually referred to as Grat. The ANZAC Day medallion was issued for sale in 1916. The medallion was struck by the Education Department of Victoria for school children in 1916, to commemorate the first anniversary of the ANZAC Forces landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. An article in the ARGUS newspaper, written at the time, stated that the medallions were issued for sale for the price of sixpence. Although 175,000 medallions were made, this proved insufficient for demand. The medallion was sold to Victorian school children at commemorations of the landing of the of the Australian and New Zealand troops arriving on the Gallipoli Peninsular in 1915. The medallion was also distributed to the public on ANZAC Button Day for one shilling. Circular medal with an eyelet at the top for attaching loop holding ribbon (loop and ribbon missing).
