Functional object - Silver plate tankard
The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Upon its return in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion. It was disbanded following the end of the war. 20th Light Horse was the only light horse regiment to serve overseas in WWII.One of a collection of tankards donated by officers of a citizen soldier regiment in rural Victoria. All documents have rounded corners. .1 - Memorandum on SEC paper, light green sheet, dated 18/7/1962 from the Engineer and Manager of the SEC to the Manager Ballarat Branch, regarding the Courier's reports and the Parliamentary report. .2 - Memorandum on a green sheet forwarding Press cuttings and the Work's Superintendent's report re the derailment. .3 - Handwritten report dated 4/7/1962 re the derailment, three sheets on ruled paper, cause of the derailment, works to repair, derailment of 36 at the same location on 3/7 (twice), trackwork issues, track repairs being undertaken and comments re The Courier's reporting. Signed by W. Linaker. May have been the draft pending typing. .4 - Plain sheet with three newspaper clippings - all 4/7/1962 a - "putting off evil day" - questioning the track maintenance as a precursor to closure. Yields information about the condition of the collision between the scrubber tram and No. 26 in Wendouree Parade and the parties involved during Feb and Mar. 1936.Set of two cuttings and text extracts of the reports of the collision between the Ballarat scrubber and tram No. 26 on Wed 5 Feb, 1936. Both extracts and texts down loaded from the National Library Trove Website. .1 - report in the Melbourne Herald, reporting on the inquest into the death of nurse Elizabeth Clarke - titled "Ballarat Trams in Fatal Collision - no warning bell heard says woman passenger", giving details of the accidents, statements of witness Lilian Oliver, Alfred Forte (SEC track assistant), Albert Mawby traffic superintendent, quizzed by Constable Shields re track brakes, Frederick Thompson (Driver of 26). Yields information about the reconstruction of the depot trackwork during 1935/1936 and the condition of the rails, types of rails and methodsSet of 5 Black and white photo prints from collected negatives of the relaying of the depot fan at the SEC Ballarat depot building, during refurbishment by the SEC during 1935 or 1936. 1351.1 - Wendouree Parade depot junction, track - relaying the 2nd set of points. One track was still useable at the time. Note fences and tools lying around the work area. 1351.2 - laying out the trackwork for two and three roads, note machines and cylinders in background. 1351.3 - looking along No. 2 road out of the depot doors, not connected, possibly taken some time after 1351.2, as the area appears to be cleaned up. 1351.4 - Photo showing the various rail weights for possibly the western rail on No. 3 road and how the fishplates were at the time of the photograph. Not known whether this was the final arrangement, taken looking towards the depot building. 1351.5 - ditto but from the other end - note the damaged flangeway on the depot end rail - horse tram rail? Photo taken 11/02/1966, published 12/02/1966. No. 35 has an "Electric Cooking Serves you best" roof advertisement and has a Sebastopol destination. Yields information about the condition of the ESCo tram fleet at the time of the SEC takeover of the operations their appearance, the reconstruction work and trackwork to rehabilitate the system. Demonstrates an important era of the Ballarat Tramways through the SEC preparing an album of photographs. The completeness of the record adds to the significance.Photo Album - comprising folded manila card covers, 11 photo sheets each with two, one with three black and white photos. Has three metal - steel fold back clips holding the sheets together. Folded so that the metal clips are not exposed on the outside. Has the title "Photographs of Ballarat Tramways Rolling Stock & Track Reconditioning Works". Album contains 23 photos, glued to the manila sheets - assembled by the SEC. All SEC photos except as noted below. Each of the photographs have been separately registered, as shown in the table below. Scanned images made of photos. Conservation Notes prepared - within the cataloguing sheet. Inside cover Typed notes, dated 1935, of the early trams of Ballarat, trailers ex Sydney, new trams ex Melbourne in 1930, and a further 5 in 1931. Lists the original Brill trams still in service (9 Number), and a noted on the recent scrapping of No. 11.
