Born in Ireland in 1838, Annie Ross married Samuel Lewers at Creswick in 1856. Samuel Lewers, a gold buyer and bank agent, became manager of the Bank of New South Wales in Linton in about 1860, and was afterwards the first Shire of Grenville President and a Justice of the Peace. Annie and Samuel Lewers had eleven children. They lived in the residence at the Bank of NSW building in Sussex Street (this building now known as Traquair House). Around the time Samuel Lewers retired in 1895 they leased and moved to Emu Hill, the property formerly owned by the Linton family, at that time owned by Edward Morey. Elizabeth (Bessie) Mercer, a daughter of Henry Boyd Mercer and Deborah Mercer née Sinclair, was born 23/8/1873 at Spring Hill (near present-day Pittong). She attended Spring Vale State School where she achieved her Merit Certificate. She registered as a teacher in 1891 and completed further training to become a teacher of gymnastics in 1896. Bessie married David Brown of Chepstowe, and they farmed at Pittong. They had two children, Vera and Roy. Bessie Brown died in 1940. Bessie and her sister Emma were very involved with the war effort during World War I, and after the war they were presented with certificates of appreciation by the Linton "Diggers". Emma Mercer was born in 1870 and lived at Spring Vale (now Pittong) at the Mercer property "The Pines". Emma worked as a teacher and head teacher at several schools, including Mortchup, Chepstowe, Kiata and Tarilta. In 1916, after she had retired from teaching, she married James Brown, a widower, one of a large farming family at Chepstowe. They had no children. James' brother David was married to Emma's sister Elizabeth (Bessie), and after James Brown died in 1931, Emma moved to live near her sister at Pittong. Emma Brown died in 1954. Emma and her sister Bessie were very involved with the war effort during World War I, and after the war they were presented with certificates of appreciation by the Linton "Diggers". A very early property in our district Warranooke The main names associated with the property Ayrey - Darnell - Nicoll, later Campbell. Mrs. Campbell built Charles Ayrey's daughter. The Campbells built up the station buildings. The homestead was virtually rebuilt in brick, making it one of the largest and most elaborate in the East Wimmera. Date is approximate. William and May Palstra were married in 1920; 60 Guildford Road was their first and only home. William was with the university when he joined the Australian Flying Corps in WW1. He went back to university on his return from the war but in 1926 when the RAAF was formed he joined it as he had enjoyed flying. He took his family to England while he did 2 years training at the Imperial College in London under Air Vice-Marshall Jones. He was chosen as the Australian representative on a special flight of an experimental airship designed to fly over long distances. The test flight was destined for India, then on to Australia. Its passengers were high level British officials including the UK Secretary of State. It struck bad weather after crossing the Channel, clipped a hill and crashed in France. Some of the crew survived but William Palstra was killed. Mrs Palstra did not receive any compensation; only a small allowance, then cut during the Depression. She was given some support from the Returned Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen's association. Donor, Margaret Thornton was a daughter of William and May Palstra; one of her daughters, Julia Thornton still lives in the house in 2009. Donation form signed by Julia Thornton. Margaret and Jocelyn had a brother, also William. The photo comes from a souvenir brochure printed for the dedication of The Shrine on 7 April 1918, a copy of which is also held in the collection.. The Shrine was opened on Sunday 7 April 1918. Mrs C H D Steele, President of the local Patriotic League, is credited with the idea of building The Shrine as a fitting memorial to the WW1 soldiers of the district. The Surrey Hills Progress Association coordinated raising funds from local residents. John Kendrick Blogg carved the beautiful honor roll in Indian teak and Australian white mahogany and the design of the Shrine was by John Stevens Gawler, architect of Gawler & Drummond. Both men donated their services. It was one of the first WW1 memorials to be built and is noted for its use of Australian motifs, wattle blossom and gum leaves. The boomerang over the full width of the monument was said to be symbolic of both those who did and did not return. Surrey Hills Progress Association coordinated fundraising to build the memorial. Home of Mr and Mrs Henry Haeffner and family from about 1920 until 1980s. Built in about 1910, the house retained the popular Victorian bullnose verandah roof but added timber Federation style fretwork and the verandah had become shortened. The chimneys are slim in Federation style. A sale notice for the property was donated by Marj Higgins (nee Haeffner); it is filed with other information relating to the property. This photograph is of a rectangular white damask tablecloth, which was owned by Mrs Murrell (Lily Murrell, née Young, wife of William Murrell). The Murrell family ran the Linton newsagency during the 1930s and 1940s. Mrs Murrell asked people who came into the newsagency to sign and date the cloth, and later she embroidered the names and dates in various coloured thread. Traditionally such ‘signature cloths’ were used as a fundraiser for charity purposes and date back to the 1890s at least. They were at their height of popularity during World War I and the inter-war period, often embroidered in red or blue. The Linton tablecloth has a number of signatures and dates, some not embroidered, the dates ranging from 1931 to 1945. It is a delightful example of the genre and a wonderful visual record of people who lived in or visited Linton over a period of 15 years.Colour photograph of a cream cotton tablecloth that has signatures embroidered on it.

New centres were opened or extended throughout Victoria and the Metropolitan area, volunteer services expanded and the Vision Resource Centre at Kooyong was built into which 3RPH radio was relocated. A Vision Information hotline, audiology services and the National Centre for Ageing and Sensory Loss were established, the Braille and Talking Book libraries was incorporated into the Association and the Charlie Bradley Cricket Pavilion opened at Kooyong. In 1990 Diana Jones became a member of the first Board of Directors of the newly incorporated Association for the Blind Ltd which ushered in a new era, requiring strict observance of financial and accounting methods in order to ensure continued Government funding. Mrs Jones was highly regarded by clients, volunteers and staff as a capable hard-working leader. Her services to the Association and over many years to the wider community, were recognised in her appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia in the 1993 Queen's Birthday Honours.
