John Thomas Hayes (1830-1909) came to Bendigo in 1853 and married Harriet Rokewood in 1858. He established the Commercial Bakery in Hargreaves Street. This bottle was made by Whitall and Tatum who manufactured bottles from the early 1800's through to the 1930's. They specialised in producing chemist bottles and this particular cobalt blue bottle is on of the more rarely produced bottles. This syrup forms a cooling and pleasant addition to beverages for patients with febrile complaints, and serves to conceal the taste of saline purgatives in solution. It is made by steeping lemon juice and skin in a sugar syrup and alcohol. We are unsure of the particular chemist to whom it belonged.A fine example of a late 19th century bottle which was used and owned by a Warrnambool business.Square cobalt blue glass bottle with rounded neck and lip with round stopper with narrow section in the middle.Printed paper label with red and gold border and mainly black text, is attached to rectangular section which is indented on one side.It has a fine line through the centre of the bottle from the process of manufacturing.Label: Warrnambool Wholesale Druggists & manufacturi chemist. handwritten on label Syr Limonis. These plaques were once on display at the Warrnambool racecourse with the smaller one originally affixed to a seat. These plaques commemorate the winner of the Grand Annual Steeplechase in Warrnambool in 1931. The Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase was first held in June 1872. Today it is part of the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival and is run over 5,500 metres with 32 fences. Cooliel won two Grand Annuals, in 1927 and 1929 where he was ridden by jockey W McInnes. he was owned by the Lindsays of Quamby where he died in 1930 after a successful career over the jumps.These plaques are of interest as mementoes of the Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase one of Australia's most significant hurdle races..1 Silver coloured metal plaque in a rectangular shape with four holes in each corner for attachment to a surface. This is an empty Justus Van Maurik cigar box made c1950 by appointment to the House of Lords, London and the cigars were used by George Reed who was a draftsman in City of Moorabbin c1950. c1700 The Dutch East India Company brought spices from South East Asia and tobacco from the New World to Sumatra and Java in Indonesia. 1794 Justus van Maurik Senior established a tobacco factory in the centre of Amsterdam and his son, Justus van Maurik Junior, spread the company’s fame well beyond the borders of (Holland) Netherlands as he travelled the world successfully promoting the family’s tobacco business.Dutch cigars were popular c1950 in the City of Moorabbin and Justus van Maurik Pty Ltd was a quality producer from Amsterdam , Holland (Netherlands) commencing production c1794. In July 1909, a modest 12-page booklet was put together by members of the fledgling Old Ruytonians Association (ORA) and distributed to the Ruyton Girls' School community. It was one of their first projects, and their aim was to nurture continuing interest in the School among former and current students. They named it "The Ruytonian." At first, The Ruytonian was produced twice yearly, and always bore a plain cover with a simple name banner. Initially, it was the work of volunteer editors from the ORA, but in 1913 they handed the publication over to the first student editors, Esther Gibson and Lucy Tickell. Since that time, the style and content of The Ruytonian has continuously evolved. The biggest shifts occurred in 1942 when it transitioned to a yearly publication, and in 1969 when it moved to a larger A4 format with a cover image specifically selected for that year.The record has strong historic significance as it pertains to the fourth oldest girls' school in Victoria, Australia. Ruyton was founded in 1878 in the Bulleen Road, Kew, home of newly widowed Mrs Charlotte Anderson (now High Street South). Thus, the record can be used as a reference example for research into Victorian school history. This briefcase belonged to Tom Aldrick, SERN VX91434. Tom was born in WARRAGUL VIC. He enlistmented in ROYAL PARK VIC. His next of kin was - ALDRICK J. The briefcase was captured from a Japanese soldier by HQ Company 2/14th Infantry Battalion, as shown by the Japanese inscriptions. The case had some documents inside. It was donated to Dandenong RSL in 1983.Black leather brief case with carry handle on top. It has one central metal slide locking facility. Has two buckles on either side of central lock to secure briefcase. There are a couple of Japanese words inscribed with texta on the inside of the brief case. There is also the name "T & R.E. Aldrich Bayles" written with biro the inside of the briefcase.
