Plan, Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works : Borough of Kew : Detail Plan No.1297, 1904
The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) plans were produced from the 1890s to the 1950s. They were crucial to the design and development of Melbourne's sewerage and drainage system. The plans, at a scale of 40 feet to 1 inch (1:480), provide a detailed historical record of Melbourne streetscapes and environmental features. Each plan covers one or two street blocks (roughly six streets), showing details of buildings, including garden layouts and ownership boundaries, and features such as laneways, drains, bridges, parks, municipal boundaries and other prominent landmarks as they existed at the time each plan was produced. (Source: State Library of Victoria)This plan forms part of a large group of MMBW plans and maps that was donated to the Society by the Mr Poulter, City Engineer of the City of Kew in 1989. Within this collection, thirty-five hand-coloured plans, backed with linen, are of statewide significance as they include annotations that provide details of construction materials used in buildings in the first decade of the 20th century as well as additional information about land ownership and usage. The copies in the Public Record Office Victoria and the State Library of Victoria are monochrome versions which do not denote building materials so that the maps in this collection are invaluable and unique tools for researchers and heritage consultants. A number of the plans are not held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria so they have the additional attribute of rarity.Original survey plan, issued by the MMBW to a sewage contractor with responsibility for constructing sewers in the area identified on the plan within the Borough of Kew. The plan was at some stage hand-coloured, possibly by the contractor, but more likely by officers working in the Engineering Department of the Borough and later Town, then City of Kew. The hand-coloured sections of buildings on the plan were used to denote masonry or brick constructions (pink), weatherboard constructions (yellow), and public buildings (grey). This plan of Kew encompasses the area bounded by Barkers Road, High Street and Stevenson Street. Because of the angle created by High Street, a number of houses on the northern side of High Street are shown. The area is dominated by one of the great original landholdings in Kew, described here as the ‘Findon Paddock’. ‘Findon’, the house from which the name of the paddock was taken fronts Stevenson Street and was clearly a rambling structure. The best-known occupant of Findon was Henry ‘Money Miller’ who bought the house in 1871. Miller was a member of Victoria’s first parliament and assisted in the framing of its constitution. Findon was to be subdivided as early as 1912, when the Findon Subdivision was advertised to be sold by auction. In the plan of the subdivision, the original house is not shown, so, presumably it had previously been demolished. Fincham & Son moved the organ, built by Henry Willis, which was installed in the house, first to ‘Whernside’ in Toorak, and later to the Box Hill Methodist Church.melbourne and metropolitan board of works, detail plans, mmbw 1297, cartography, kew (vic.) — municipal collection -

John Cleeland JP of Newhaven, 1826-1914, a native of County Down, Ireland, came to Victoria in 1840 with his parents and settled at Darebin Creek. After a few years spent there he went to sea in his schooner yacht of 200 tons, the Harriet, visiting the South Sea Islands and the west coast of South America. In 1859 he took the well known Albion Hotel, Bourke-street east, Melbourne, the starting place for all Cobb and Co's lines of up-country coaches, and kept it for 22 years, marrying whilst there Miss Blake, of Mornington. Shortly before leaving the hotel he purchased 7000 acres of land at Phillip Island for breeding purposes, and there bred Wollomai, who won the Melbourne Cup in 1875. In 1881 he retired to his magnificent estate, besides which he has another 1000 acres at Bass and other properties. He also once owned racing stables at Brighton, where he had Barwon (which won the Champion race) and other valuable horses. Mr Cleeland is a member of the Phillip Island Council and is a justice of the peace for the central bailiwick. Taken from Victoria and its Metropolis: past and present, 1888. City of Kingston
Photograph - Black and white, 20 December 1945
Cheltenham is a suburb in the City of Kingston that was originally established as a rural market gardening community. The area is bordered by Highett, Mentone and Heatherton. The market gardens, farms and paddocks have gradually been sub-divided into housing and industrial estates. The Southland shopping centre is a major feature of the area.Cheltenham was established as a rural market gardening community. The Le Page family lived in Cheltenham since 1854 when Nicholas Le Page, a tailor from the Channel Island of Guernsey, bought two acres of land on Chesterville Road near Bernard Street to establish a market garden. Over the years the Le Pages purchased more land in the area. In 1875-76 Nicholas' son Frank and his wife Mary built 'Daphne Cottage' near the corner of Bernard and Wilson Streets. n the 1940s Frank's son, Everest Le Page, bought five more lots of land in Chesterville Road from the Tuck family. The Le Pages grazed horses, ponies and cows on this land, and grew pumpkins, carrots, parsnips, onions, potatoes and cabbages. Many buildings and locations within in Cheltenham commemorate the Le Page family's contribution to the Cheltenham community.Aerial photograph taken in 1945 of the Cheltenham district within the City of Kingston. W.D. Vaughan (Kew's Civic Century, 1960, pp.195-6) quotes Council Minutes of 1938 and 1939 to record that: "After protracted negotiations between the Council, the Railways Department and the Tramways Board agreement was reached in June, 1938, for the filling of the railway cutting at the Harp Junction and shifting tram tracks to the High Street alignment ... The Outer Circle railway land from Princess Street to Park Crescent was purchased by the Kew Council in October, 1939, for 2,750 [pounds]. The land from Park Crescent to High Street was leased for 1 [pound] per annum. Considerable work was done in levelling the embankments to the original surface level."Important and rare photograph of the period, showing major works by Kew Council in Kew East working on a significant piece of urban infrastructure.Small, original black and white positive (photograph) showing workers and vehicles filling in the tracks of the former Outer Circle railway at East Kew. In the background is the metal bridge with brick piers, adjacent to the Harp Junction. The bridge crossed the cutting, linking the two parts of High Street. Behind the tip truck, painted on the side with the name 'Fowler Quarries' [located Keilor Road, North Essendon], one can see shops [including T.G. Garroway, Cash Grocer] in High Street. What appears to be the City of Kew Steamroller is immediately in front of the bridge. A group of passers-by watch from the bridge and from the road. Envelope Art
One of a series of illustrated envelopes which once contained letters drawn by a soldier/s and sent to Mrs MacDonald of 32 Grey Street Wangaratta.Victoria's 2/24th Infantry Battalion was raised in Wangaratta in July 1940. They were welcomed with open arms by the local community as they rapidly built up their numbers. The people of Wangaratta adopted the Battalion and they became known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. Many of the soldiers maintained life long friendships with the people of Wangaratta. Even though the Battation was disbanded in 1946 members and their families return each year, in November, for a commemorative service at the 2/24th Battalion Memorial Wall at the Wangaratta Cemetery.Cream paper envelope with drawing of war scene - cannon in front of hut and palm trees, ambulance in centre and bomb exploding below aircraft in sky.Top left - AIR MAIL Top right - postage stamp Left side - AIF Censor stamp Right side Mrs M MacDonald "Monald" 32 Grey Street Wangaratta Victoria Australia ww2, envelope art -

Domestic object - Hat Brush, late 19th century
The hat brush is an example of a domestic object that would have been common to most households in the late 19th and early 20th century. The hat brush is significant in that the inscription connects the brush to a prominent hat maker in the Western district whose business can be dated to the late 19th century. The address of the business was 24 Bridge St Ballarat and was owned by Mr Charles Morris. Curved wooden hat brush constructed from light polished timber. The handle end has a small hole in it and the front end is pointed. The bristles are two tone in a circling pattern and cut to follow the curved shape of the wood. There is a chip out of the wood exposing the bristle holes. The brush is stamped with the suppliers name and address.C. MORRIS, HATTER, (?)
