The subdivision included six allotments facing Buchanan Avenue and Houghton Street. The subdivision was to the east of the Pointed Firs Estate (1936). In addition to the intrinsic value of this subdivision plan, it also reveals information about the development of transport infrastructure in this area. A street, which was subsequently constructed in this vicinity, was Merrion Place, which now runs between Studley Park Road and Highfield Grove. Sixty-six allotments, created on the ‘order of Mr & Miss Preston’ surrounded the mansion of Woodlands in Harp Road. Woodlands formed part of the Estate, being advertised as lot 1. The allotments faced High, Station and Wright Streets, Harp and Normanby Roads, and Woodlands Avenue. Pru Sanderson in the Kew Conservation Study (Vol.2, 1988) wrote that the Eastlawn Estate ‘covered the western half of the failed Harp of Erin Estate’. Contemporary advertisements promoted the Eastlawn Estate as: ‘There will be no more convenient district nor pleasant Suburb than East Kew for the busy business man. When the Electric Tram is laid, he will be able to journey quickly and pleasantly direct from Collins Street to his home in the Eastlawn Estate in about 20 minutes’. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens.The Raheen Estate Subdivision of 1960 involved the creation of 36 residential allotments and the sale of 34 of these. The land on which the subdivision was created had until 1960 formed part of the grounds of the mansion Raheen in Studley Park Road. In 1917, the Catholic Church had purchased Raheen and its lands. It was to become the home of Archbishop of Melbourne, Daniel Mannix, for 46 years. The sale of the subdivision took place three years before the Archbishop’s death. Subsequent archbishops were to reside at Raheen until its sale to the Pratt family in 1981. When the sale of the Estate was reported in the newspapers in 1960, it was described as the last big subdivision near Melbourne. At the auction, 33 of the 36 allotments were sold. The auction realised £315,750. Purchasers were advised that the vendor intended to keep lots 22 and 23. The alllotments in the subdivision required the construction of new roads. These included Eamon Court and Raheen Drive. The children were on a school camp at Beechworth. During their time at the camp they visited various places of interest as well as engaged in various activities. One of the activities was hiking to the Woolshed Falls and looking at the terrain. Amaryllis was the first fishing boat built by the Haldane Brothers in Port Fairy 1935. A well boat was on the Port Fairy register from 1936 -1943 in the name of W.H.Haldane. Page turners were used in churches and synagogues to read Holy books, to turn pages in huge manuscripts and books (and later newspapers) as well as open double pages without a sharp knife (letter openers). This was from the home of W.J. Sebire in Wandin.A highly polished cream coloured long vintage celluloid page turner used for reading. It has a curved round ended long smooth blade which is paler than the darker short round pointed handle. Both sections have small dark brown fine floral designs on one side. in the early part of the 20th century, Warrnambool's residents had their share of health problems.according to the Annual report by Dr H I Holmes in 1921. Diphtheria, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, polimyelitis and scarlet fever were common afflictions. The sanitary system or lack thereof was the primary source of much of this illness. The healthcare facilites were much better and the hospital was well run and was further improved by the opening of the baby health centre which was opened in October 1921. The centre was situated in Liebig street at the Town Hall and was open three days a week to offer advice to mothers regarding their babies. and Sister Riley was in charge. Miss Florence Lake who opened the centre was a well known resident of the town and generous benefactor of the Warrnambool base hospital.. Florence along with her sister inherited the Lyndoch estate from George and Annie rolfe in 1920. She was well known around the district for her good nature and humour. As her sister married and moved to Italy, she continued to run Lyndoch as it had always been. She died in November 1946 This plaque has historical and social significance as it notes the time in the history of Warrnambool when health came to the fore of public interest and importance. This is a surveyors' camp in the McCulloch Ranges April, 1897. Surveyors were among the first European settlers to arrive in Australia. A Surveyor-General was present on the First Fleet, as well as the first two ships which landed in South Australia. These men were issued with instructions to record observations in a journal that included the country’s general appearance, its soil, flora and fauna and the customs and language of local inhabitants. The conditions they worked in were harsh and they embarked on journeys with drays carrying cumbersome surveying and camping equipment, spending months camping out in the bush and mapping the land. It was not until well into the second half of the nineteenth century that the professional training of surveyors became mandatory in Australia. John Mackersey farmed the property Kenilworth which is situated near Cavendish, 16 miles from Hamilton on the Wannon River. It was taken up by Thomas Norris in 1839 and originally carried 800 cattle and 20000 sheep on 63000 acres. By 1858 it was in the hands of John Mackersey and Thomas Bostock. In 1859 it belonged outright to John Mackersey who was there until 1870. He was considered a worthy son of a Presbyterian minister and was well regarded in the district for his contributions in church, sport and sheep breeding. However he did not do well and lost the property before going to New Zealand in 1870. This publication contains the typed transcripts of his journals, stock books.A significant collection of documentation of one of Western Victorian earliest settlers, depicting many aspects of life at that time.Dark blue hard cover with gold lettering on front cover and spine.
