In 1859 6 acres were set aside for use as a cattle market and this was established between January and July 1861 in Charleston Road, Bendigo. By 1889 this had expanded to 13 acres. It initially included an abattoir, butchers, tanners and soap makers. In 1893 a rail spur was opened to prevent the need to drive cattle through residential areas. The Anglican church established a tent church on Agitation Hill in 1852. In January 1855 the foundation stone for All Saints was laid on the corner of Forest and MacKenzie Streets. The church opened for worship in June 1856. It was initially named the Anglican Cathedral (seat of the Bishop). St John's was first established in Melbourne in 1883 to teach First Aid. The first class of 30 ladies were trained in Bendigo by a visiting surgeon instructor and completed their First Aid course in November 1886. In 1888 the first stretcher and hand ambulance was established in Bendigo and a request was made for mobile ambulances to be operated by men. Women were deemed only suitable for home nursing and hygiene instruction. By 1902 , in response to the high level of mining accidents, men were being trained in First Aid and the first St John's branch was started at Eaglehawk in 1903. Edward Thomas Warren arrived in Victoria in 1852 and joined the police force in 1856. He served in Geelong 1856-1864 before coming to Bendigo, where he remained until his death in 1892. He had retired from the police force in 1886. He had been a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters for 25 years. This fraternity aimed to provide social and financial support to members during sickness, death, old age, unemployment and disability.A 44 page document detailing the history of the local Warren family. Thomas Pinniger (1828-1927) was born in England and emigrated to New Zealand before coming to Australia in 1852. With a team of 4 he conducted the first geodetic* survey of Victoria. He became the Government Surveyor for Bendigo in 1853 and in 1854 he laid out the plans for the town of Broadford. His son George, became the Victorian Surveyor General 1925-6. * Large scale mapping based on global measurements of large land masses. Charles Henry (Harry) McQueen (1910-1994) married Olive May Graham in 1935. He was a butcher by trade (McQueen's Butchers, Castlemaine). He was a pioneer of accordion dance music and was mentored by Billy McGlashan. He played by ear and his preferred instrument was a Mezon Grand Organ in the key of A. He played old time waltzes, bush dances and Scottish reels. He was well known for his double and triple right hand fingering. The decade that began in national and domestic uncertainty was to end on a fancifully resolute moment, when Kew Council decided to apply for a gold mayoral chain. While most cities had previously been gifted mayoral chains by the Victorian Government, Kew had passed up an earlier opportunity in 1933. In that year, councillors had asked the Town Clerk to investigate whether previous mayors were willing to donate a gold link for the chain on which their name would be inscribed. Either the answer was negative, or else the Great Depression unnerved the decision makers. Hawthorn councillors, in contrast, accepted the offer of a gold chain, contributing the cost of the enamelled central medallion, while twenty former Hawthorn mayors agreed to each donate a link. At a Special Meeting of the Kew City Council on 22 August 1949, the Lieutenant Governor, Sir Edmund Herring presented a gold mayoral chain, worth £250 to the City of Kew. Contemporary newspaper accounts recorded that sixteen former mayors, or their families, donated a link inscribed with the name and term of its owner.
