Article - Article - Women, Ballarat College of Advanced Education: Women of Note; Dulcie Brooke (1927 - 2023)
Dulcie Brooke (nee Hoffman) was born in 1927. The history of women and the Wendouree Amateur Athletic Club seems to be very closely linked to that of women's athletics in Ballarat. Club photos of the 1953/54 season are the first to show women to be represented among the numbers who competed for Wendouree. However the Kevin Ruddick book, Always Striving - The Ballarat Harriers First 100 Years, notes that a Ballarat Harriers Women's Club was formed in September 1952 to compete against a Wendouree team and also mentions the Harriers women winning the premiership of 1953. Whatever the chronology, what is for certain is that Wendouree was at the forefront of the development of women's athletics in Ballarat and continued to be so until the unification of the sport for both men and women in 1979. Dulcie was one of those who are thought to be among the original members for Wendouree. Ballarat College of Advanced Education established a Health and Safety course. This became known as the Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, Australia (VIOSH) beginning in 1979. Max and Dulcie Brooke were members of Staff at Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education and became part of the initial group in presenting the course. Dulcie had science qualifications and was a bacteriologist. She was involved with the library aspect of the course and informed on the selecting of resources. In the early 1990s, Max became ill and Dulcie retired to care for him. Max died in 1992 and Dulcie established the Max Brooke Memorial Shield in his memory. This was presented by Dulcie to the winner of the Award at the Presentation Dinner every year from 1993 to 2010.women of note, dulcie brooke, science, librarian, institute of occupational safety and health, viosh, ballarat college of advanced education, university of ballarat, max brooke, max brooke memorial shield, wendouree amateur athletica club, women of wendouree, dulcie hoffman, 1927-2023, 1979, bacteriologist -

Trophy, Junior Challenge Shield 1936, 1932
This junior football shield was given by James Fairbairn (1897-1940), a prominent Western District pastoralist, aviator, local politician and Federal Cabinet minister. He was killed in a Canberra air disaster in 1940. The shield shows that several football teams, including West End, Russells Creek and East Warrnambool won the shield in the 1930s. In 1936 the shield was won outright by West End Football Club. This club, founded in the late 19th century, played in Western District Leagues until 1946 when it joined the newly-formed Warrnambool District Football League. In 1971 it merged with the Allansford Football Club to become the West End-Allansford Club and in 2002 the name ceased to exist when the team name was changed back to Allansford Football Club. This trophy is of interest as a football trophy given over 80 years ago and as a memento of the Warrnambool West End Football Club, a team no longer existing. The sport of Australian football has been, and still is, highly prominent in the Warrnambool district with football first played in the town in 1861. This is a wooden shield with nine silver-coloured metal discs affixed to the shield with metal pins. Eight of these discs are shield-shaped. All of the discs have etched inscriptions. The discs are somewhat stained and the wooden shield has traces of paint on it. There is a wire attached to the back of the shield for hanging on a wall. ‘Warrnambool Junior Football League’ ‘Junior Challenge Shield presented by J.V. Fairbairn Esq. The School of Mines was established in 1870 in Ballarat, making it Australia's third oldest tertiary institution. Redmond Barry was its first president, and he was involved in the creation of university degree level courses for the school. The School of Mines was divided into a tertiary division and a technical division. The tertiary division provided higher education courses such as mining engineering, geology, education and business studies, while the technical division provided such programs as wool classing, plumbing and bricklaying. It remained in that form until the 1967 when it was split into three institutions, Ballarat School of Industries, Ballarat Technical School, and Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education. They remained three entities until 1976. Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education merged into Ballarat College of Advanced Education. The Ballarat School of Industries and Ballarat Technical School merged into the School of Mines and Industries, Ballarat (SMB) in 1976. Several entities merged or had arrangements with SMB. In 1994, a memo of understanding (MOU) was signed between SMB and the Ararat Technical School, which was founded in 1969. School History: In February, 1955, Ballarat East High School opened in Hopetoun Street, in the vacated weatherboard buildings of the Girls’ Secondary School. In 1956, however, the School moved to its present site in Fussell Street, but because of the lack of space, Woodwork and Cookery classes were still held at Hopetoun Street. Since then there has been steady progress. The original building was extended, more classrooms and a library being built. A Domestic Science block was completed in 1957. Later, as mentioned elsewhere, sheltersheds, basketball courts, a bidycle shed and a canteen were provided for the pupils from funds raised by the Parents’ Association. Where there were previously bare areas of clayey soil we now have asphalt paths and neat gardens. Shrubs were planted, and seats, painted in the School colours, were places around the asphalted areas.
