Keith Pither was born at Shepparton in 1914 and grew up on a farm. Attended Otira Methodist Home Mission Training College from 1936 and by 1939 was a probation minister at Burnie (Tas.). Enlisted in the army 1939 and served in the Middle East and Northern Australia. In 1943 he was ordained in the field as a chaplain and later served in New Guinea. Married Allison (Alison?) Brown in 1945 and they had four children, Brian, Rhonda, Andrew and Howard. Completed his studies at Melbourne University 1946. This mug commemorates the birth of Mary S. Edwards on February 3rd, 1857. The mug is one of four (within the collection) gifted to each of the Edwards children. 2. Wm I Edwards born may 5th 1859 3. Elizabth Edwards born on April 19th 1862. 4. Grace Edwards born on February 19th 1864. All mugs were used by the Edwards children during their lifetimes and were donated to the museum by Misses Illife and Bessie Edwards in 1979.These mugs are of local Ararat and District significant due to their age (over 150years old in 2011), the fact that compile a complete set of four from the same family, and the fact that the family has close ties with the Ararat district. Their condition is very good (minor chips) and this, along with their usage during the lifetime of the original owners, adds to their significance.Highly glazed white porcelain mug inscribed in gold gilding across the body, and decorated with same on the lip, base and handle. This card from the Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club is a pass for a lady for the meeting of 5th May 1914. This day was part of the three-day 1914 May Racing Carnival which featured the Warrnambool Cup and the Grand Annual Steeplechase. The first organized horse race in Warrnambool was held in 1848 at Jetty Flat and the Warrnambool Racecourse was first in use in 1858 with the Warrnambool Racing Club established in 1873. The Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club was established in 1859 and was the only Amateur Turf Club in Victoria. It no longer exists This card is of interest as it is a memento of the Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club, an important early sporting club in Warrnambool. It is also an early memento of the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival, today a premier sporting event in the city and beyond and it is officially a Victorian Major Event. This is a small piece of light cardboard, blue on one side and white on the other. The card has rounded edges. On the blue side it has the emblem of the Warrnambool Amateur Turf Club and gold printing. This Warrnambool Botanic Gardens Study and Report was funded by the National Estate Grants Program of the Australian Heritage Commission and the City of Warrnambool. It was monitored in progress by a Steering Committee consisting of representatives of the Botanic and Public Gardens Advisory Committee, the Warrnambool City Council, Friends of the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens and National Estate Grants Program representatives and community representatives. The Warrnambool Botanic Gardens were first sited close to the Hopkins River in 1859. In 1869 the gardens were relocated to the present day location in Botanic Road. This plan is of some importance as it gives an overview of the history and current condition in 1995 of the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens and draws up a plan for its future development. It is useful for research and for consideration by the City Council today of policy making and further development of the gardens. This is a publication containing a master plan for the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens. It has a section on acknowledgements, a summary, eight chapters, and 14 appendices. The pages are bound with plastic rings, the front cover is plasticized with an aerial photograph of the Botanic Gardens and surrounds and the back cover is lightweight cardboard. The first company to make a success of hard-rock (quartz) gold mining at Black Hill was the Black Hill Company, formed in 1859. Mining from the open-cut mine probably commenced in 1860 and by 1861 the company had erected the largest stamping mill in Victoria. The mill ran 24 hours a day until the end of 1864 and 12 hours a day in 1865. Open cut mining then ceased. Dugal MacDougall was born in Scotland and came to Victoria in 1852. He was initially a farmer at Kyneton and in 1855 he purchased a produce store in Golden Square but in 1859 he turned to mining. In 1861 he married Mary Ann Brocklebank (1843-1891). In 1867 he was elected to the Sutton Ward of the Sandhurst Council but resigned from this position to become the Bendigo Town Clerk, a position he held until his death in 1879. Susie Voutier (1863-1942) married Frank Bryant of Linton in 1908, and for many years they ran a popular shop in Sussex Street, which sold pies, confectionery, ice-cream, hot drinks and other refreshments. Frank Bryant died in 1919, and in 1931 Susie married Philip Burden. The mural of an impression of Macedon Street in Sunbury 100 years ago was painted by Frank Breen, on the brick garage wall of the Catholic Presbytery and it faced the garden in front of the former Sunbury Courthouse. Before the railway arrived in Sunbury in 1859, Macedon Street was the town's business centre. Early local businesses and and institutions that the artist included in the mural include on the LHS former courthouse, Out Lady of Mt. Carmel and the Sir John Franklin Hotel. Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Institution: The Bendigo Base Hospital, circa 1900. The first hospital in Bendigo, built of slabs and weatherboards, opened in November, 1853. The foundation stone for the Bendigo Gold District General Hospital in Lucan Street was laid in September, 1858, and the large sandstone building opened in January, 1859. In 1864, the two sandstone wings were added followed by the clock tower in 1866. In November, 1873, the Bowen Wing was opened. The hospital was incorporated in 1883. The sons and daughters of Thomas and Frances Henty were notable settlers, initially in Western Australia, then in Launceston and finally in Victoria. A number of significant mansions in Kew were owned at various stages by members of the immediate family and or their descendants.
