Marine art, Maritime artLarge framed glazed landscape format painting depicting in foreground a rusty hull of a ship against a deep aqua blue sky. The hull appears to be in a dry dock with a stylized figure with a red top and blue pants looks down from the prow at the set of low buildings and yard in the foreground. Another ship appears to be moored behind the rusty hull but only the bridge of the ship is visible. At near right in foreground there appear to be two rounded graves or headstones.The frame is sharply beaded and with gilding. The painting has a window mount and is glazed with glass. Paint surface is thinly but intensley painted and seems to be gouache or watercolour on paper. Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This item is significant because it documents actions taken by the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee in their role overseeing the Tourist Area.A circular from the Management Committee prior to the 1970 season. The official season opening time was to be midday on 12th June 1970. Clubs were asked to register their race dates for the season. A wide range of information covered topics including: slope improvements; Village expansion with 20 new sites available: a new reception centre and the upgrade of the sewage treatment system to cater for 3,000 bed capacity. The CRB was widening the road between Howmans Gap and Falls Creek. Consideration was also being given to new tows and chairlift. Prices for tows and Ski School for the upcoming season were included. A detailed Financial Report was included. This photograph depicts the Great Southern Mine located in Rutherglen as it was during the 1900. After the initial Gold Rush of 1853-1854, Gold was discovered deeper under the surface of the earth in the 1860 after the discovery of another deep lead system. Due to the discovery of Gold in Rutherglen, Rutherglen developed into a community in its own right, possessing a population of 6600 by December 1860 and developed into a municipality in 1862. The Great Southern Mine depicted in this photograph required the use of a range of modern technologies, including the hydraulic pumps, in order to reach gold. This photo depicts the mining operations as they were undertaken around the turn of the century.The search for gold is ingrained into the history of Victoria and therefore, images like this one which portray a modern mining operation undertaken in the 1860s, can reveal important information for society and technology for the date when the photograph was taken. This image is of important historical significance for its ability to convey information about the methods used to extract gold in 1900. It is significant as most mining operations around the region, particularly earlier on in the period, used different technologies such as water races. This image is important for current research into the history of Rutherglen more generally, a town which developed singlehandedly due to the discovery of minerals and mining, as depicted here in this photograph, thus indicating an element of social significance as well as historic. Odyssey House drug rehabilitation centre in Bonds Road, Lower Plenty is a distinctive landmark, especially when viewed from across the Yarra at Templestowe. It was built in the 1950’s as a seminary for the Blessed Sacrament Fathers. Because of the poor and circuitous road access, a suspension footbridge was built across the river. As well as providing easy access for the priests residents of Templestowe could attend services at the seminary. Boyd argues that modern architecture has triggered a necessity for greater harmony between architects and engineers.
