This item was used at The Men's Club Orbost in Livingstone Street, Orbost.This item is representative of the leisure activities of people during the nineteenth century and early 20th century. The Orbost Men's Club no longer exists. It is also significant as being associated with the history of Australia's leading manufacturer of billiard tables, Alcock of Melbourne who were established in 1854 and are still in business today.Billiard table iron; a heavy iron of cast metal. This has a large, rectangular face with attached, cast metal handle. This was used for pressing the cloth of a billiards table. George Cruikshank (27 September 1792 – 1 February 1878) was a British caricaturist and book illustrator.. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. George Cruikshank was inventive. In the 1800's, puns and other forms of word-play were loved by all. Some of these illustrations come from his 'Scraps and Sketches' album, published for adults in 1832, though the drawings were done between 1828 and 1832. Volumes of George Cruikshank's Scraps and Sketches were intended to be cut and pasted in home-made albums and scrapbooks; George Cruikshank was a well-known British caricaturist and book illustrator. This item represents this popular art form of the early to mid 19th century.A collection of artworks (copies of etchings) of George Cruikshank. They are bound together with masking tape. Craig Tooke, formally of Yarra Trams substations advised 12/8/2020 by email to Warren Doubleday. "An interesting photo. I don’t know who the person in the photo is. More than likely the bulb in from an industrial installation such as mine etc. and not tram or train. The reason is that only Melbourne trams has Hackbridge Hewittic rectifiers that were used for traction. There was three sets of bulbs installed at West Brunswick, Deepdene and Preston. West Brunswick is definitely still in existence and probably Deepdene is still in existence as the old substation was abandoned intact and just left intact. Preston of course has gone and was removed as part of the work done at PWS. Another clue is the number 500/6 which means it was from a 500 kW – 6 bulb unit. The traction units were all in multiples of 150 kW per bulb i.e. the tramway ones were 600 kW rated. The number "40246" is the bulb serial number. Each bulb manufactured had an individual serial number. Interesting the bulbs at Brisbane Tram Museum have the following serial numbers to the ones that were at Essendon tram sub. The Victorian Bands' League was officially founded on the 10th of April, 1931. This new organisation quickly gained the affliations of all brass bands in Victoria and took over the control of bands from the Victorian Bands' Association. The new VBL started presenting massed bands events at the MCG and ran competitions around Victoria. This program pamphlet is a unique example of the style of massed bands events that were held at the MCG with 24 brass bands all marching into the ground and performing a number of items individually or in groups. This would have been quite a spectacle! This small program is very significant to the banding history in Victoria. It provides a wealth of information as to the bands that existed in 1933 as well as what they played, and how the VBL organised events.
