Written 1959, 53.... ink 'Royal Historical Society of Victoria, Bendigo Branch ...Thomas Ham was a cartographer, engraver, lithographer and publisher in Victoria and Queensland. He compiled and printed several editions of his squatting map, beginning with A map of Australia Felix in 1847 and changing its title to Ham's squatting map of Victoria in 1851. The 1851 edition was accompanied by a key listing the names of all the squatters within squatting districts and counties. Later editions show the existing counties, but some areas of Gippsland and the Australian Alps are still described as 'unsurveyed country'. (State Library Victoria https://www.slv.vic.gov.au/squatting-map-victoria)Folding map enclosed in burgundy cover. Map backed by cloth and bound. Rare, early map of Victoria and neighbouring Port Phillip District of New South Wales. Written on bottom RH corner of map: Ham's Squatting Map of Victoria ( Port Phillip District, New South Wales ) carefully corrected to this date from the Colonial Government Surveys, Crown Lands, Commissioners & Explorers Maps, Private Surveys & c. His Wholesale and Family Grocers started in 1857. It was on the Corner of Hargreaves and Edward Streets, Bendigo. It was known as the BELFAST STORES, HARGREAVES-STREET WEST SANDHURST. After his death in1903, Robert Matchett carried on the Grocery and Produce Business.Black and white photograph on grey board. Row of brick 2 storey shops with verandas over footpath. Windows on second story have columns each side and curved and painted pediments over. On back of photograph is written: Matchett's Corner at Bath Lane end of City Club Hotel. In 1955 they purchased a 4 acre site at Ironbark to build a new mill. This was completed in a record 19and a half weeks and the mill was handed over in Sept. 1956.Photographs of the Erection of John Brown Knitting Mills: A brown envelope which had hand printed writing in black ink. On the right hand top is *MP385*. In the middle *John Brown Knitting Mills Ironbark Bendigo. 14 Photos of Erection 1954? Photos by Reg Brock*. Attached to the envelope is a torn piece so paper which has been hand written in blue ink *John Brown & Welmar* Knitwear Socks & Dress wear The Finest in the Land. Made on the site of Bendigo's Richest Gold Mine, *The Little 180*. Inside the envelope is a collection of black and white photos of the erection of the John Brown Knitting Mills on Marong Road in Ironbark Bendigo. 14 Photos in total showing various views of the construction site. Workmen on the site laying bricks, constructing the steel building and trucks delivering steel etc. A crane truck with *General Carriers Bendigo* printed on the side door. On the back of each photo is *MP385*. Rae was the organist and choir master of the parish church of St Paul, Bendigo, 1931 - 1965. Rae's son Stuart Anderson from the Balgownie Winery 1969-1999; had also been a pharmacist. Rae Anderson was a former President of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, Bendigo Branch; now the Bendigo Historical Society. Rae died on the 8th. February, 1986 aged 82 years. He was a dedicated pharmacist; an outstanding musician; choir master and organist at St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral; a craftsman who loved to fashion things in wood and brass; interested tn the preservation of our heritage. Rae established "the Anderson Library" at the Society for reading and research.Eighteen Photos of the Bendigo Hospital - wards, pharmacist, nurses and general views. They were restored from a box of glass plate negatives found under a house in Mckenzie Street, Bendigo,.when it was sold. The photos are assumed to be taken by Rae Alexander Anderson and were processed through his pharmacy.
