Murray Comrie Collection. Photocopies of seven historical handwritten letters associated with Tarnagulla. Original letters are all 19th Century. Whereabouts of originals unknown. Copies probably made by Murray Comrie in the 1960s. 1. Character reference for David Renshaw written by Thomson & Comrie (1874?) - 1 copy 2. Letter to Melbourne Postmaster from William ______ about an advertisement (1860) - 3 copies 3. Two page letter from John Papineau of Sandy Creek to the Surveyor General regarding gazetting of land for a racecourse 3 miles from Newbridge next to the Loddon, and further gazetting to protect cemetery area at Tarnagulla from gold miners. (August 1859) Original may be in Lands Dept - 2 copies 4. Letter from the Postmaster Sandy Creek to same at Melbourne regarding daily mail despatch times (March 1860) - 3 copies 5. Letter to the Mayor and Councillors of the Borough of Tarnagulla from Prince Alfred? thanking them for welcoming him during his visit (1867). Original may be in Hall. - 3 copies 6. Letter to the Dept of Lands and Survey, Melbourne from John Papineau of Sandy Creek. States that he has enclosed a copy of his August 2nd letter. (1859) - 4 copies 7. The dinner took place at the Town Hall, Melbourne, and was attended by the Governor, Sir Rohan Delacombe, the Hon. Don Chipp, M.P., the Premier of Victoria, Sir Henry Bolt, and the Lord Archbishop of Melbourne, The Most Reverend F. Woods. The insert has information for guests and is indicative of traffic movement on Swanston Street at the time. The document was found with other papers of President D.J. Simonson who would have been one of the guests since it took place during his presidency. The signatures on the back have not been identified.Part of the social history of the early 1970s and an indication of the activities of Melbourne Legacy presidents.Cream coloured menu card, black and gold printing and insert paper black on white.Signed in blue pen by some of the people attending the dinner.legatee event, function -

The district of Strathfieldsaye was proclaimed in 1861 and named a Shire on the 17th September in 1866. It remained a shire until amalgamation in 1994 when it became part of the City of Greater Bendigo. The shire was located 8 km to the south- east of Bendigo and covered an area of 601 square kilometres and extended from the Calder Highway to the Coliban and Campaspe Rivers. The shire's administration centre was in Strathfieldsaye until 1972 when new offices were opened in Kennington. Eppalock Ward is one of three wards in the Greater Bendigo municipality which includes the former Strathfieldsaye Shire. Framed black and white head and shoulder portrait with hand coloured detail. John Robert Hoskins was a Councillor with the City of Bendigo from1888 - 1902 and Mayor from 1901 - 1902. Hoskins' interests in the region included the mining company Hoskins & Co, which distinguished itself on the late Derwent Reef United Company's leased ground in 1868 by achieving a yield of over an ounce to the ton. In the late 1870s John R. Hoskins formed a estate agency in partnership with Frederick Illingworth. He was also manager of the New Nil Desperandum, formed to work the shaft of the old Raywood mine, from 1906 to 1908. Event program for the Mayoral Dinner July 25, 1902. David Andrew was born in Castlemaine in 1866 and moved with his family to Bendigo in 1871. He took over his fathers auctioneering business which was situated on the corner of Hargreaves and Williamson Streets in 1893. David Andrew married Myra Swan McIntyre in 1888 and they had two children. After the death of Myra in 1892 aged 27 he married Myra's younger sister Clare and together they had a further two children. David Andrew was a prominent member of the old Bendigo Caledonian Society, Captain of the Bendigo Fire Brigade, a member of the Bendigo Masonic Lodge and for many years Secretary of the Easter Fair. He served as a Councillor from 1904 - 1925 and Mayor 1909 - 10 and 1913 - 14.Event program for the Mayor's Ball. Gold and purple print on white and cream card. Councillor Carolin became Mayor for the first time from 1889 - 90 and then again in 1907 -08. John Paul Carolin married Mary Corcoran in 1861and together had 10 children.
