Photo of Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop meeting widows he was a guest speaker for the Heidelberg Widows Club when they were celebrating their 10th Anniversary in May. This photo featured in the July edition of The Answer with the unfortunate footnote that Sir Edward had passed away on the 2nd July. "Our picture shows the gentlemanly Sir Edward charming the ladies. All were sad to learn of Sir Edward's death on 2nd July 1993." Another article in the September edition of The Answer was a touching tribute to Sir Edward by a legacy widow Dorothy Madigan: Sir Edward was so strong and tall, in body and in mind Yet gentle, too, he saw sick through their dying days in Thailand. This was the doctor's greatest challenge when all seemed hopeless and lost To improvise a theatre, and operate; for himself, at such a cost. The Merle Bush Trefoil Guild was registered in Bendigo on 18/06/1981.The decision to disband the Merle Bush Trefoil Guild was made at a General Meeting on 17/02/2016. The group agreed to continue as the Merle Bush Friendship Group. The Australian Trefoil Guilds connect women who are either actively involved in Girl Guiding or have a history with Girl Guiding. Patricia Boyd was on the Board of the Australia Opera for several years. The Walsh St house holds a significant collection of opera recordings. Penleigh Boyd wrote this in The Age obituary to Dorothea Patricia Davies AM (3 Jan 1921-5 Nov 2009). "In 1988, Patricia was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for her service to opera involving many years of voluntary work on the board of the Australian Opera - work which she greatly enjoyed involving travel, music and meeting many interesting and entertaining people. She was also a life member and former president of the National Gallery of Victoria Women's Association." In October 2011 the Ballieu Government announced funding cuts to public and private technical training organisations as a cost saving measure. The government reduced funding for seven subject areas including business and clerical, finance and hospitality, totaling $300 million across the state. During a visit to Ballarat on 15 June 2012 Premier Ted Ballieu was met by hundreds of protestors angry at the TAFE cuts. It was expected that the Ballarat TAFE sector would be cut by $20million (or 40%), and up to 60 TAFE programs would be cut. A report in 'The Australian' on 01 June 2012 projected the TAFE cuts would result in the loss of almost 2000 jobs across the state. 'If the projections are correct, Victorian college redundancies would dwarf those in manufacturing and aviation, matching the worst predictions of job losses across Australia's entire banking sector.' Ballarat's National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) and the Ballarat Trades and Labor Council (BTLC) are following up their earlier protest campaigns with a monster meeting to be held at Ballarat Trades Hall, Camp Street on Sunday 8 July. First radio appeal for 3RPH raising over $30,000, opening of the new Baringa Day Centre at Shepparton. 30/6/1996 the annual report highlighted the Centenary of AFB it was noted that self-help has always been the major emphasis underpinning the work of the Blind Member's Council. The Tilly Aston Fund raised over $1/2 million for the new National Information Centre. The peer support work and monitoring of services, ensures that we give back something to AFB, for the support we receive. BMC representatives made 70 visits across the State. The Council registered the Tilly Aston Rhododendron as a lasting way of acknowledging the work of our founder. 19/9/1997 The Chairman welcomed those present to the second combined meeting of the AFB and the Tilly Aston Customer Council. The Council welcomed the change in Articles and Memorandum of the Association and the formation of the Tilly Aston Customer Council which allowed all customer of the Association automatic membership and input to the monitoring of services. The ‘Court of Honour’ was a regular meeting of the ‘Patrol Leaders’ (PLs) - the Scouts in charge of a team of around six Scouts, and the adult Scout Leaders - then known as Scout Masters (SM) or Assistant Scout Masters (ASMs). Photocopy of brief biographical notes in respect of the guest of honour, Colonel Sir Edward Dunlop at a Legacy meeting. Legatees met regularly and usually had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The requirement to be a guest of honour at a Legacy meeting is highlighted in purple. It says: A Guest of honour shall be an individual who by reason of his services to the community and/or the ex-servicemen and his dependants, is unanimously deemed by the Board of Management to be worth of being so described". In this case Sir Edward (Weary) Dunlop was a speaker and his brief biography was included in this Bulletin.A record that the speakers at Legacy functions were from very different walks of life and the subects spoken on were many and varied. The photograph was taken at a Sunbury Race meeting, when a sudden shower of rain caused the spectators to run for cover. Sunbury Race Course was situated along Racecourse Road about 2kms from the railway station. The land has been sold and it is now a housing estate. Two photos of Legatee Saltmarsh with widows in Legacy House. L/ Saltmarsh was the Widow Committee Chairman and was involved in organising events for widows and in publishing the newsletter. The photo shows him with two widows, Marion Scammell was working on a her tapestry under the guidance of Nancy Crooks, the instructor. One was published in the newsletter in April 1996 to show widows the types of activities that Legacy provided. For many years there were workshops for craft and others for painting. The timetable for activities was published in The Answer (prior to Sept 1992 it was called the Melbourne Legacy Widows' Newsletter) each month.
