Has a strong association with the author who was interested in public transport and chose to write an economic history essay about the close of the Ballarat Tramway system and its substitution by buses and whether they should be government operated.Fifteen, lined or ruled foolscap page manuscript / Essay for a Melbourne University Economic History subject, 1972, written Kevin Tierney about the abandonment of the Ballarat Tramway System. Has a Synopsis, references and quotations from various sources. The question to be answered was "Should the electric tramways at present operated by the State Electricity Commission in the provincial centre of Ballarat be abandoned and if so, should public ownership be retained for the replacement system?" A photocopy on A4 paper was also donated by the author. Set of 9 black and white views of Bendigo printed on a folded strip, glued within a light grey colour light weight cardboard folder, titled "Bendigo Photographic Booklet". Booklet printed with an address area with title and kookaburras. Produced by The Valentine Publishing Co. Pty Ltd Melbourne & Sydney The rear has a slit on the rear cover that allowed the folder to be secured. Pictures are: 1. Mitchell St 2. The Lookout Tower 3. Conservatory Gardens 4. Shamrock Hotel 5. Newspaper clipping contained within Reg. Item 2526, page 10, titled "From Horse Tram to Trolly Bus" (mis-spelt word) recording the history of the cable trams in Melbourne, the formation of the company, prohibition of steam locomotives, costs, mechanical problems, Council objections, rails, visit of Mr. Hallide, court actions, King St. track, take over by the MMTB and that "conversion war still rages" - and perhaps trolley buses. Newspaper, "Lament and Reverie on Passing of Melbourne's Cable Trams", "Cable Trams .... Clang Into History", 1940
Newspaper clippings contained within Reg. Item 2526, page 11 and 12. Cutting on page 11 titled "Lament and Reverie on Passing of Melbourne's Cable Trams", written "By a Former Traveller", with date of 26-10-1940 in blue pence. Notes that the person was glad not to know of the last run of the Melbourne cable trams, the previous Saturday. Laments their passing, rides, crews, St. Kilda Road, the tramcars and the services provided. At the base of the cutting has a photograph of cable trailer No. 1 being off loaded in Lonsdale St. to go into the Museum. Cutting on page 12, titled "Cable Trams .... Clang Into History" written by Hugh Murphy. Appears to have been written prior to their withdrawal in Melbourne but noting their closure at the end of the year. Notes the construction, the costs, Mr. F.B. Clapp, G. S. Duncan, operations, the various routes, the services and the gradual deterioration of the track. Has the Melbourne Punch cartoon of 10/12/1885, titled "Bail Up". Cuttings have been cut out from a sheet and pasted into the book. Photo taken after the tram has passed the photographer. Has Reid's Furntuorium sign in the background. The film strip notes (Reg. Item 2560), provided the following caption details: "The "GOLDEN SQUARE" line followed the Calder Highway toward Melbourne for a couple of miles. Painting of the tram in Melbourne MMTB green had commenced, note colour of the destination box. Framed set of photographs of Melbourne W1 421decorated as an "illuminated" tramcar for the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York to Victoria April 21 to May 12, 1927 and the opening of Canberra on May 9, 1927. Tram identified in the 4th edition of Destination City. Note Tasmania is missing from the map on the side of the tram. Two photographs of the tram, a three quarter front on view and a side on view have been framed within a black wooden frame, protected by a glass sheet, with an off white cardboard sheet cut out for the photographs to frame them, cardboard backing sheets with an ink inscription under the two photographs. The rear backing sheet has been tacked onto the wooden frame. Images show the overall object, the two photographs, the text and the rear of the object. Images i2 and i3 updated for scan of the actual negs. Varnished wooden panel fitted with 13 different tramway or railway related signs and one small image of a Melbourne Tramcar. The panel consists of two pieces of plywood glued to wooden backing boards. The signs have been fixed to the panel with brass screws - either round or countersunk. Uniform - Cap, Commonwealth Government Clothing Factories Melbourne, 1960's
Demonstrates uniform cap manufacture, badge and has a strong association with a former Ballarat Driver - Jock Menzies.SEC Motorman/Drivers/Conductors cap - green cloth exterior, grey cotton interior lining, brown leather internal hat band, black cotton hat band on exterior with a plastic band at the front half of the cap terminating in two small SEC metal buttons on either side, black plastic peak fitted with cap or badge No. 60, nickel plated silver, in the centre of the cap above the hat band. Piece of sheet steel, enamelled with red, white and black paint for use at tram stops. Small red band at top, white band with letters CARS STOP HERE and large red band underneath, on both sides to indicate to drivers a compulsory stop- That is all tram to stop at the location. (two copies of this poster added June 2000 - from the ARHS Vic.
