Flour bags were used when purchasing flour from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century. They were able to be reused for bulk storage of dry goods or sewn into domestic objects such as tea towels, pillowcases or waggas.The flour bags provide both a snapshot of different producers and stockists of flour in Victoria and an example of a useful domestic packaging product, from the early 20th century.A set of five flour bags originating from different Victorian places. The Cutty Sark was launched on 22 November 1869. She was named by the wife of George Moodie, the ship's first master who had also supervised her construction. Cutty Sark left the Clyde on 13 January 1870. A month and two days later, she set sail from London for China. Cutty sark was designed and built by Scott & Linton of Dumbarton for 16,150 pounds. But much of the money was to be paid by Willis when the ship was launched. Just before they finished her, Scott & Linton ran out of money and went bankrupt. She was completed by William Denny & Brothers. The Cutty Sark was the first ship to reach London with a tea cargo in 1877. But she was one of only nine sailing ships that returned that year - in 1870 there had been 59. Steamships were now dominating the tea trade. In 1883 the Cutty Sark joined the booming trade in transporting Australian wool. Every year until 1895 she set out in the summer for Australia, to load a cargo of wool bales and return to England in time for the wool sales ini the first three months of the new year. Cutty Sark soon established herself as the fastest of the wool clippers. Postcards began to be produced in Victoria from 1876. Between 1900 and 1920, picture postcards in Australia became an incredibly popular phenomenon. People could cheaply and easily send messages, without the formality of a letter, and they provided a cheap form of souvenir. Eventually, every event of significance was commemorated in some way with a postcard, and this led to the development of a ‘picture on one side and a message/stamp on the other’ postcard we are familiar with today. They were also a popular form of advertising. This postcard appears to be one in a set of postcards promoting the Black Rock area.Postcard with photographic image which appears to have been hand tinted depicting Half Moon Bay beach at Black Rock. In the foreground in tea-tree bush, the foreshore has beach shacks on it, along with many small boats moored in the bay. A long jetty enters the bay. The photograph has been taken from the cliff top. The photograph shows a cable tram set with trailer 44 at the Bridge Road Richmond terminus. The S McIntosh's Bridge Hotel is in the background, along with four shops including the Oriental Cafe for Tea and Grills. It would appear that the gripman is ready to leave though a male passenger seems to be hurrying forward to catch the tram. The typed caption records that the dummy is No. 12, the photograph is dated Jan. 1924 and notes the slotted depot lead out track in the foreground. This is a set of 12 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s winning entrant in the Miss Golden North Charity Queen quest - 2LT Kathie Ryan, taken on three occasions in 1985. The following article was compiled by the unit summarising her campaign. ‘On Friday 20 September 1985, 2LT Kathie Ryan of the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo, faced a selection panel of a different kind. Kathie is an entrant in this years Miss Australia Quest and is sponsored by her unit. Together with seven other girls from Central Victora, Kathie vied for the Regional Title of Miss Golden North, held on 20 September 1985. With enthusiastic shouts of joy from the members of the Regiment present, Kathie Ryan was crowned Miss Golden North 1986. She is now one of 19 finalists contesting the title “Miss Victoria 1986”. “It has been a very rewarding experience being involved in raising money for such a worthwhile cause” said Kathie. “Organisations such as the Spastic Society, have a very important role in helping people with disabilities. To be involved with this society has been both enjoyable and a great learning experience”. The aim of the Miss Australia Quest is to raise funds for the Spastic Society of Australia. Kathie entered the Quest in March then, together with her committee, started to raise money. Over the next seven months, many fund-raising activities were conducted. These included an Open Day at the Army Survey Regiment, a Bingo night, several raffles, and several tin shakes in the streets of Bendigo as well a participating in several of the functions organised at a Regional or State level in the name of the Spastic Society. The total raised this year was in excess of $11,500. The Army Survey Regiment has now had 3 entrants in the Miss Australia Quest since 1981 and has raised over $23,000 for the Spastic Society in that time’ An abbreviated article with photo 6593.4P was published on page 12 of the Army Newspaper on 28 November 1985. Two articles with photographs were published in the Bendigo Advertiser Newspaper on 23 September and 30 October 1985. Clippings from these newspapers, a detailed breakdown of the funds raised during the campaign and the Army Survey Regiment’s Open Day Administrative Instruction are stored with these photographs. The Open Day was held on the weekend of 24-25 August 1985.
