The Warrnambool Regatta was held on the Hopkins River on Sunday 27 December 1891. B. Laing rowed for the Warrnambool Rowing Club. A trophy was given to each member of the Maiden Four crew- A. Lumsden (bow), B. Laing (2), D. Rowan (3), J. Rowan (stroke), A. Geilhofer (cox). B. Murray Comrie Collection. The Tarnagulla Tennis Club maintained a strong membership right through the late 1890s and well into the 1900s, and the necessity for a second court soon became imperative. Many well-known Tarnagulla residents can be seen in the photograph. Members of the Page, Bool and Comrie families are prominent, and the tall gentleman sitting near the middle of the image is Dr. Donovan, Tarnagulla's resident medico. This set was given by the Warrnambool City Council Councillors to Horace Lawson on the occasion of his marriage in 1898. Horace Edward Lawson was the son of Susan and Thomas Lawson. The latter at one time had a drapery business in Liebig Street. Horace Lawson was the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1893 to 1918. He was a keen cyclist and a member of the Warrnambool Volunteer Artillery Corps. In 1918 Lawson was appointed the Secretary of the Municipal Association of Victoria, a Melbourne appointment. This set is of considerable interest as it was presented to Horace Lawson, notable in Warrnambool’s history as a long-serving and successful Town Clerk. This silver-plated tea and coffee set has four items – coffee pot, tea pot, sugar basin and milk jug. All have the same etched decorative patterns on the sides and the lids and all have handles attached with a nut and a bolt. The tea pot and the coffee pot have the maker’s marks on the bases and there is an inscription on the side of the sugar basin. The lids of the coffee pot, tea pot and milk jug are hinged. ‘W. Marlo was once a very busy port. Goods needed by the early settlers were carted by sea-going vessels to Marlo. At the Marlo wharf goods were unloaded from the large vessels onto barges and towed by paddle steamers to Orbost. Joseph Henry Abbott arrived in Australia from Birmingham England in 1852 aged 22 hoping to make his fortune on the goldfields. In 1853 he opened a store in Bendigo, Abbott and Co and from there began a lengthy career as a business man supplying the local community with goods and services including owning and operating the New Times Boot Market & Factory in Pall Mall, Sandhurst, run by his wife, Anne (nee Deague). J H Abbott’s main ambitions were to serve on the local and state councils. He was elected Chairman of the Sandhurst Borough Council in 1860, Mayor of the City of Bendigo in 1891 and was gazetted a Justice of the Peace in 1864. Over his lifetime J H Abbott was closely linked to nearly all the leading institutions in Bendigo and worked for the benefit of local charities. He was trustee of the Bendigo Art Gallery and a Freemason and was said to be the first person in Bendigo to have a telephone installed in1882 between his residence and his business in Pall Mall. After JH Abbott died in 1904 he passed on his businesses to his son JH Abbott Jnr and adopted son RHS Abbott. These businesses continued to trade under the name JH Abbott & Co and today still operates under the name Abbott Supply although the last of the family interests ceased in 1986. Abbott and Co acted as agents for larger Melbourne based suppliers such as Briscoe & Co and the Australian Explosives & Chemical Co. The “Glengarry” beached at Marlo The schooner Glengarry was a well-known trader on the Gippsland coast and had been stranded on a number of previous occasions including at the Natural Entrance joining the Gippsland Lakes to Bass Strait – Ninety Mile Beach, Lakes Entrance, c 1877 . In May 1898, the vessel struck a submerged object while crossing the Snowy River bar at Marlo and was beached, eventually becoming a total loss. Until t he railway came to East Gippsland goods were shipped from Marlo to Melbourne. John Barnaby was born in 1867 near Rosebud, Victoria. In 1885 he came to Melbourne and started working as a teacher at Caulfield Grammar School. In 1894 John Barnaby entered the Theological Hall at Ormond college. He graduated B.A. in 1895 and finished his theological studies in 1896. He was ordained in 1898 and called to Kew Presbyterian Church. In 1903 he took his M.A. degree. In 1912 he left Kew and was appointed Neil Walter Black Lecturer at Ormond College Theological Hall. Graduated Bachelor of Divinity and also gained a Diploma of Education. Convenor Home Missions Committee until 1923. Superintendent of Group Mission from 1923. On the original register father's name is listed as William and the residence as Neil St, Ballarat.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in brown cloth with gilt and black illustrations on front cover and spine. Teacher Ellen Sweeney at rear. A former student of the school from 1879 (age 4) to 1889, Ellen was a teacher at Eltham State School from 1891-1898. She returned in 1915 until her marriage to William Hooley of Casterton at St Marys, Eltham, Tuesday, April 24, 1923. Based on Ellen Sweeney's hairstyle, the date is more likely to be in the earlier 1890s Thomas Tennant, photgrapher operated from 116 Johnston Street, Collingwood from c.1891 through to 1900. This poster was made for the sale of the 1,440 acres of Orbost Station after the death of Sir William Clarke. It was sold by Edward Trenchard & Co. which was the oldest Stock and Station agent in Victoria assisted by Desailly, Macarthur & Co were livestock experts. Sir William Clarke had taken over the Orbost run from the McLeods in 1870. When Sir William died the property was owned by his son, Rupert who offered the land for sale at 4 pounds per acre. No sale resulted and the property was leased for a few years until in 1898 it was subdivided and sold to many of Orbost's first families. Tait collection: item 44 of 62 This document gives details of the Will and Probate of William McJannet, a Warrnambool carpenter who died in 1898 at the age of 80. He and his wife and two of his children came to Australia from Scotland in the 1850s and at the time of his death he was living in Raglan Parade. He left real estate to the value of £400 and the beneficiaries were his children. The lawyer concerned with this document, H. Parrington, had legal offices in Kepler Street with the firm known as Higgins and Parrington but Mr Parrington was in partnership with Mr J.Tait when this document was drawn up. The document has been passed down to successive lawyers occupying the Kepler Street premises and located in this building in 2014. This document is of some importance as William McJannet was a well-known resident of Warrnambool in the 19th century. The document will be useful to researchers. This is a piece of white paper folded in two with printed red lines on the edges of three of the pages. Three pages have typed material and one page has handwritten material in black ink. It gives details of the Will and Probate of William McJannet who died in 1898.
