Francis Alexander McFarlane Born: 5 Sep 1878 Maldon, Mount Alexander Shire, Victoria, Australia. The 6th child (5th Son) of 10 children born to John James McFarlane and Jane Matthews. Died: 19 May 1962 Coburg East, Merri-bek City, Victoria, Australia. Francis married Margaret Ada Tobin in 1904 in Maldon, Mount Alexander Shire, Victoria, Australia. McFarlane worked extensively in the mining industry. According to electoral rolls McFarlane lived in Maldon from 1903 to 1927. During this time, he worked as a "cyanider" (using cyanide to separate gold from the ore) from 1903 to 1909. By 1912 he had listed his occupation as an assayer. By 1927, he listed his occupation as a metallurgist. By 1931, he was working as a metallurgist in Coburg before moving to Bendigo sometime in or prior to 1936, where he listed his occupation as "assayer". He appears as a postal worker in Coburg in 1949. He was still in Coburg in 1952 but does not have an occupation listed.This 10-page book (including cover) is the status of account for Mr. FA McFarlane from the opening of the account on 25 March 1936 to 4 Dec 1937. The account was held by the Commercial Bank of Australia. The book has a cardboard cover covered in navy blue fabric. The pages are made of thick paper, each containing tables for the purpose of tracking the accounts balance. The cover has a label stuck to the front with Mr. McFarlane's name written on it. The account book is full, with every page showing transactions. Each entry was made with either a stamp or an ink pen. The Bank book contains the Bendigo Historical Society identifier number. Arthur Allsop went into the business office at Bendigo (Vic.) of the late Mr. Alfred Joseph. He later operated as an independent bookmaker. Arthur Allsop was a partner in the firm of Kelly and Allsop and was involved in mining and speculation in Bendigo. He was elected as a member of the Bendigo Stock Exchange in 1906. He started his athletic career at picnic sports and was a fine athlete winning many foot races. For 15 years he acted as secretary of the Sandhurst City Fire Brigade, he was captain of the Bendigo lacrosse team. He was a fair cricketer, and played against the English and Australian Elevens. He played football, and acted as secretary to the Bendigo Football Club. In later years he played bowls and captained pennant teams. He was a Past District- Grandmaster in the M.U.I.O.O.F. Allsop eventually moved to Melbourne and then Sydney working as a bookmaker. He died in Sydney in 1921. Herman Wehner, had learned his trade as a blacksmith and coach builder in Germany before coming to Australia in about 1884. After working for some time in Melbourne and at Wallan he came to Orbost in 1889 and bought John William Borland‟s wheelwright and blacksmithing business in Nicholson Street. At the time there were two blacksmithing and wheelwright businesses in Orbost, the other one, also in Nicholson Street, was owned by Mr John Russell. (ref, John Phillips Newsletter July 2015) Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex. The Wehner family is/ was a prominent family in Orbost from the late 19th century. Herman Wehner founded Wehner's Blacksmith's at Orbost in 1889. Oswald Wehner began working in 1910 with his father. In 1947 Ossie's son Tom started blacksmithing, retiring in 1991 and closing the business, The building remains in Nicholson Street. This item is an example of book-keeping in the early 20th century.
