On 31 October 1992, a parade was held at Australian War Memorial to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the charge at Beersheba, Egypt (present day Israel) on 31 October 1917 during the second battle of Gaza, by two regiments of Australian Light Horse, 4th ALH and 12th ALH to capture the all-important wells in the town. An Honour Guard drawn from the Victorian Mounted Rifles Squadron of 4/19 Prince of Wales’s Light Horse, commanded by Lieutenant Kelvin Robertson, paraded in the forecourt of the AWM together with a body of horsemen from the Light Horse Association. Host for the parade was Mrs Elyne Mitchell OAM, daughter of wartime commander Lieutenant General Harry Chauvel. The reviewing officer was Lieutenant General J C Grey OA Chief of the General Staff. Concurrently, a parade was held in Melbourne where 4/19 Prince of Wales’s Light Horse and other units and services exercised their right to freedom of the city. This prosthetic arm has been made to assist a person who has part of his or her arm missing. The hook fixed to the end is an attempt to give the wearer extra assistance in replacing some of the functions of a hand. Prosthetic hook arms like this one have existed for centuries. Archaeological evidence shows that prosthetic limbs have been designed and used since almost 6000 years ago. Hooks for seafarers were made from whatever materials were readily available onboard the ship., such as metal, wood and leather. Often the prosthetic arms were simple lock-jointed pieces with basic hand positions. During the 19th century, advanced technology led to improved appearance and movement of prosthetics. In 1914, Mr and Mrs Arthur Hooke gave the name ‘Wandinong’ to their newly purchased property in Blackburn. The name was inspired by a recent cycling trip to Wandin in the foothills of the Dandenongs, as well as the title of a favourite book, Ethel Turner’s ‘The Camp at Wandinong’. Their property and the surrounding district had originally been owned by a series of property investors and speculators, and while some of it had been cleared for grazing, most of it was still covered in virgin bush; thickly covered with trees and undergrowth and rich in wild flowers and bird life. A small section of the Hooke’s property was cleared sufficiently to r\erect a house and some outbuildings, but the rest was left as n nature intended. Mar Arthur Hooke was a local property valuer but never owned a car, preferring to attend to business on his bicycle. He was still riding his bicycle in his eighties. Meanwhile, Mrs Hooke had developed a keen desire that the ‘Wandinong’ property remain intact; that it should ultimately be set aside as a place of refuge where like-minded people could go to enjoy peace and quiet amongst the native birds and bushland.|To this end, Mr and Mrs Hooke liaised with the Nunawading Council and an agreement was reached whereby the council would assume ownership of the property on their deaths. When Mr Hooke died in 1972, his wife transferred the land over to the council the following year. Mr and Mrs Arthur Hooke’s Grandson, William, and granddaughter, Christine, recently donated their grandmother’s bicycle to the Whitehorse Historical Society. They recall that their grandfather’s bicycle was given to a representative of the Nunawading Council for safekeeping some years ago. Magill's laryngoscope with open straight blade and flat round speculum and a detachable light bulb connector, the bulb is missing. This laryngoscope is a previous version of the battery use ones conceived around 1920 therefore circa 1900. The design of the handle is similar to the Shipway laryngoscopes with a curved and pointed end and anatomical handle grip. The blade attachment place seems to be an adaptation to this kind of blade which differs from original models. The piece has several scratches and deep hit marks, as well as oxidation spots mostly around the internal canal of the blade. There is presence of resin residues on some surfaces. A visible different kind of metal was used at the blade base attachment place and for the light bulb connector. 21 NBHC built as 21 NBH. It was converted by the addition of a Guard's Van compartment and modified for Wheelchairs access by Puffing Billy Railway and re classed & numbered 21NBHC Puffing Billy Service History or Notes Between 1997 and 1998 the Puffing Billy railway built six more NBHs, numbered 18-23. These had steel frames, padded seats, and a wide "window sill". At first glance they look the same as the previous NBHs. Aboriginal soldiers formed a special all volunteer platoon at No 9 Camp Wangaratta in Victoria from late 1940 until February 1941. No 9 Camp was set up at the Wangaratta Showgrounds to allow the formation of the 2/24th Australian Infantry Battalion prior to leaving for Egypt. Major Joseph Albert Wright a WW1 Light Horse veteran was in charge of this platoon the only Aboriginal squad in the Australian Military Forces at that time.
