Ray WOOLARD (1951-03/2024) Born Ballarat, Victoria Ray Woolard studied at the Ballarat Junior Technical School (c1967); Diploma of Art (Sculpture) at the Ballarat School of Mines/Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education from 1969-1972; a Secondary Art and Craft course at the Ballarat Teachers College c1973; and then the Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne) 1974-75. He was studying at Ballarat Teachers' College when he completed 'Moose in High Healed Sneakers'. It became a greatly loved artwork on the Gillies Street Campus, and was moved the Mount Helen Campus in 1976 when the Ballarat Teachers' College became part of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. David NOONAN (1969- ) Born Ballarat, Victoria. Lives and works Melbourne, Victoria and London, United Kingdom. Leaving secondary school as soon as he could, David Noonan enrolled in a Visual Art Course at the Ballarat School of Mines. He described this time as 'an inspiring time, with every art form covered and treated with passion and rigour.' He studied ceramics, photography, painting and knew that he had to be an artist. Jacqueline SLAYMAKER This work was undertaken in 1992 when Jacqueline Slaymaker was a 3rd Year student at Ballarat University College. The catalogue for the End of Year exhibition in 1992 states "The figures importance is purposeful. The strong sculptural form of the torso, tensions of the skin and volume are the aspects I focus on. Drawing is vital to my painting. The heavily layered works that I sand, scratch and rub back into eventually resolve some of the problems associated with painting. I believe this constant re-addressing creates a sense of history and building a texture creates a sense of history and build up of texture illustrates the concrete solid way I see the figure. I draw resource from ancient sculpture in particular Etruscan coffins and tomb wall painting. More recently I am interested in the draftsmanship of Jim Dine and monoprints of May Frank.' Doug WRIGHT (1944 - ) Born Ballarat Doug Wright studied at the Ballarta School of Mines Art School between 1963 and 1964, followed by studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1965 to 1966, resulting in a Diploma of Art (Fine Art Painting). Since 1974 Doug Wright has had over 20 solo exhibitions and a survey exhibition in 1993 which travelled Victorian Regional Galleries. From 1975 to 2009 Doug Wright was Lecturer in Painting at State College of Victoria (Ballarat) and University of Ballarat. Loris BUTTON (27/02/1951- ) Born Melbourne Dr Loris Button grew up in Melbourne, completing undergraduate studies in painting and drawing at the Phillip Institute of Technology, followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Tasmania. Her PhD thesis employed self portraiture as a means for reflecting on the self, time and ageing in contemporary culture. From 1981 – 1986 Loris lived and studied in Hobart before returning to Melbourne. She lectured at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy from 1987. Since 1990 she has lived and worked in Ballarat and the nearby town of Creswick. Loris retired from an academic career at the Arts Academy, University of Ballarat (now Federation University) at the end of 2010. Loris has continued a post-retirement association with the Arts Academy through her role as an Honorary Research Fellow. Working with prints, paintings and drawings on handmade paper, her work is regularly shown in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas. Nornie GUDE (1915-2002) Eleanor Constance (Nornie) Gude was the daughter of Walter Gude, a leading musician, and highly regarded teacher. She grew up in Ballarat and was educated at Loreto College. From 1931 to 1936 Nornie Gude attended the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. She was accepted into the School at the age of 15 because she was so advanced in painting. Nornie Gude studied at Ballarat for five years before progressing to Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria School. In 1936 Nornie Gude was studying at the Ballarat Technical Art School, and the National Gallery Drawing School in Melbourne. She won many art competitions, including first prize at the 1936 Melbourne Royal Agricultural Show for still life drawing, and in 1941 became the first woman to win the National Gallery Students Travelling Scholarship. In the 1936 Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report it was stated: "It is my pleasure to report a most successful year in the Technical Art School. I the Annual Poster Competition for Technical Schools, organised by Wiltshires Pty Limited, 16 prized valued at 33 pounds 8 shillings - out of 23 prizes valued at 56 pounds - were won by our students. As an artist Nornie Gude held no theories and was once heard to say, “You spend your first 20 years learning technique and the next 20 years losing it”. Albert E. WILLIAMS (1899-1986) Victoria, Australia Albert Edward Williams was among the first to undertake the five-year, Technical Art Teacher’s Certificate (TATC) at the Ballarat Technical Art School in 1915, with work placement at the Ballarat Lithographic company. Williams taught for several years before he was selected to undertake further teacher training at the Working Men’s College, Melbourne, in 1926. He returned to teach at Ballarat in 1928, facilitating many student activities, while pursuing the arduous Art Teacher’s Certificate. From its inception in 1914, it was 30 years before the first candidate achieved the certificate’s exhaustive requirements. This artwork was completed for the Drawing Teachers' Secondary Certificate at the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of MInes. Sybil CRAIG (18/11/1901-09/09/1989) Born London, England Arrived Melbourne 1902 Died Melbourne, Victoria Sybil Frances Craig was a student of John Shirlow in 1920 who introduced her to French avant-garde artists such as Matisse and Gauguin. In 1924 she studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School. She also underook private classes with George Bellfor several months where individual expression was encouraged, and she became associated with a group of Modernist artists including Sam Atyeo. In 1945 Sybil Craig became the third woman to be appointed as an official war artist. Based in Melbourne she worked for fourth months at the Commonwealth Ordinance Factory at Maribyrnong, becoming the first female artist to paint women working in the munitions factories. Neville FRENCH (1955- ) Born Maryborough, Victoria In 1977 Neville French graduated from Ballarat College of Advanced Education after studying a Diploma in Fine Art (Ceramics) between 1974 and 1976, and was a tutor there for six months in 1978. He holds a Master of Arts, Research (Ceramics) from RMIT Universiy, and was awarded the Vitrify Alcorso National Ceramics Award in 2012. Neville has an international reputation as a ceramics artists and educator. From 1982 to 2012 Neville French was teach and coordinator of the Ceramics department at the Ballarat School of Mines and University of Ballarat (now Federation University). From 1982 to 2012 Neville French taught Ceramics at the Ballarat School of Mines TAFE, which later merged with the University of Ballarat (now Federation University Australia). He completed a Graduate Diploma of Education at Hawthorn State College in 1980, a Certificate of Stoneware Glazes from Brisbane College of Advanced Education in 1983 and a Master of Arts Fine Art (Ceramics) at RMIT University in 2000. Between 2010 and 2012 Neville French taught post graduate honours and masters Ceramics students. During his time as a student at Ballarat Neville Bunning would collect clay from the Enfield clay pit. He described following white tyre tracks to find the location. He described the clay as silky smooth and and fired to a beautiful grey colour at stoneware tempreture. When blended with terracotta clay from Nerrina or fireclay from Bacchus Marsh a wide range of different bodies could be created. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Statement: "My work involves an exploration of elemental vessels - extending porcelain to develop taut contours and spatial dynamics. I seek to distill an essence of purity to evoke notions of quietude and transendence through the expressive use of glaze and its relationship to form, tactility, weight and light. Forms are wheel-thrown, altered and slowly scraped to develip a soft line and solidity. Coloured matt glazes are layered and fused to the porcelain body through multiple firings to give expression and luminosity to the surface,. The iodosyncratice nature of glaze stimulates the imagination. John O'LOUGHLIN Born Snowtown, South Australia In 1980 John O'Loughlin's life changed when he started wheel throwing ceramic vessels. During this time he discarded the superfluous and unnecessary clutter collected on the journey of life, yet retaining the essence of what mattered to him. John O’Loughlin's later artworks engages with the way in which organised religion, specifically the Catholic Church, deals with the translation of the spiritual into the material. Informed by his extensive travels and studies, O’Loughlin’s ceramics reference the reliquaries and church artefacts that connect the life of this world with that of faith in another world. Completing undergeduate and post graduate works at Federation University John O'Loughlin's honours thesis was entitled "Ways and Means of Meaning, The Use of Symbol and Surface as Expressive Media in Ceramic Sculpture". The University provided a serious ceramic studio equipped with all the research tools for advanced ceramic exploration. Access to raw materials and a variety of kilns combined with excellent lecturers, mentors and technicians inspired, motivated and challenged him to push his accumulating knowledge to higher levels. O'Loughlin's working method in the studio is one of quiet, determined interaction with clay, idea and content. Experimentation with a variety of temperatures, firing methods and atmospheric conditions has produced a broad tonal and textural palette. He has worked with various clay bodies overlaid with coloured oxides, slips and engobes as the foundation for many of his works. O'Loughlin ufilised raised surfaces from old cemetery tombstones using the impressed forms and textures in his constructions. This research led him to the use of dry engobes to create a sense of antiquity, with crusty and distressed surfaces that resemble objects neglected in the oceans. These objects seem covered with the accretions and accumulations of history when re-discovered and brought to the surface as miraculous objects of mystery and magic. Loris BUTTON (27/02/1951- ) Born Melbourne Dr Loris Button grew up in Melbourne, completing undergraduate studies in painting and drawing at the Phillip Institute of Technology, followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Tasmania. Her PhD thesis employed self portraiture as a means for reflecting on the self, time and ageing in contemporary culture. From 1981 – 1986 Loris lived and studied in Hobart before returning to Melbourne. She lectured at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy from 1987. Since 1990 she has lived and worked in Ballarat and the nearby town of Creswick. Loris retired from an academic career at the Arts Academy, University of Ballarat (now Federation University) at the end of 2010. Loris has continued a post-retirement association with the Arts Academy through her role as an Honorary Research Fellow. Working with prints, paintings and drawings on handmade paper, her work is regularly shown in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas.
