Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: PETTICOAT, Late 1800's early 1900
Clothing. Very fine cotton petticoat with a fitted bodice, and dropped waistline. Back opening fastened with six 1 cm diameter buttons - three are fabric covered - (possibly the original buttons) and three plastic ''pearl'' buttons. The square neckline is outlined with 2.5 cm deep cotton lace inserted with 1.5 cm wide satin ribbon tied in a bow at the centre back and front. A row of very fine cotton lace, 1.5 cm deep then edges the square neckline, and also the arm holes. The back bodice is shaped in six panels, and front bodice is shaped in three panels. Three panels of embroidered cotton lace extends from the front neckline to the bustline. Outer panels are 5.5 cm wide and 7 cm long, while centre panel is 11 cm long and 5.5 cm wide. Each of these panels is outlined with the 2 cm wide cotton lace. From the dropped waistline, a 2.5 cm wide cotton insertion lace is threaded with 1.5 cm wide satin ribbon. The skirt is lined with fine cotton, finished at the lower edge with a 5 cm wide gathered cotton frill,and an over- frill, 14 cm deep of spotted tulle, edged with a 1.5 cm band of cotton lace. The outer skirt is spotted tulle in four bands- separated by four 3.5 cm wide bands of floral patterned lace. The hemline is trimmed with an eleven cm deep band of floral lace with a lower scalloped edge. The under-skirt is made with nine gored panels, and has a 5 cm deep lightly gathered frill at the hemline.costume, female underwear, petticoat. -

Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: SILK AND NET BLOUSE, Late 1800's early 1900's
Clothing. Cream cotton net, woven with a goemetric pattern of filligree diamonds and tiny squares. The garment is fully lined with the most delicate, and sheer cream silk. A peplum ettect 7 cms deep, is finished with 9.5 cm deep peak at the centre front. Two metal hooks, and stitched eyes are the only fasteners, and are located at the waistline on the peplum seam. The curved front bodice is edged with a 3.5 cm deep frill of cream net, which is finished at the outer edge with two rows of stitching in a heavier weight thread. The front bodices are gathered at the centre front to the peplum. The long sleeves are finished at the wrist, with a double frill of plain tulle, also edged with a double row of stitching, in a heavier thread.costume, female, silk and net blouse -

Clothing. Very fine cream net, embroidered around outer edges, in a semi-abstract, floral design - 4 cm deep, and finished at the top with a small 3 mm diameter ''spot''. Overall the embroidered design is 5 cm deep. A second layer, ruched at the centre back neckline, folds down over the lower layer, giving a double embroidered effect. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: BABIES BIB CREAM CROCHET ( UNFINISHED), Late 1800's - 1880's
Clothing. Cream silk crocheted babies bib (?) or perhaps may have been one side of a crocheted ''ladies bag''. A scalloped edge 2 cm deep, surrounds the edge of the piece, but is either unfinished or damaged, on one side of the neck piece or handle. A central, circular motif is surrounded on three sides by crochet work, while at the top of the motif is the shaped opening for the bag or neckline. Textile - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: SILK EMBROIDERY ON SILK, Mid 1800's
Artwork. A square of silk fabric, finished on the four sides with a .8 cm fringe of the fabric. A border of blue stitchery 2 cm from inside the fringe surrounds a floral design of three variegated pink flowers, one variegated blue flower, and soft green leaves. Textiles. Woven thread design, edged with a 2.5 cm fringe. A deep coffee coloured linen, with a woven deign in the centre 8 cm square, surrounded with a 2 cm wide border, woven in a different texture. Clothing. Square crocheted lace collar, in a floral design. Medallions, 2.3 cms square - 116 medallions. Each medallion has a flower at the centre, with a row of three dimensional ''petals''. A finely crocheted piece, with a semi-circular edging at the square neckline, and around the outer edge. 9 cms deep, one side has an opening but no fasteners are evident. Clothing. Very large, deep, linen lace collar.- Brussells Bobbin lace. Six large ''tear-drop'' shapes - 8cm long, enclose a delicate floral design. Thirteen daisy like flowers are spaced around the outer edge, along with leaves and smaller flowers. The long neck - edge is edged with a leaf - like design lace. Clothing. Lace trimmed, white cotton fabric, collar with square back, and long peaked 'lapel' type front. Neckline edge is finished with a fine one cm wide lace band. The cotton fabric is scalloped, also edged with the above lace band, which extends into a 5.5 cm band of cotton lace. The 'lapel' shape extends into a wider 'lapel' type circular motif. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: OLIVE GREEN LEATHER TRIMMED GLOVES, 1920-1930'S
Clothing. Dark olive green fabric,(possibly cotton) with a sueded feel, bracelet length gloves. In between the fingers (on the side of the fingers)the gloves have panels of dark olive kid leather. At the top of the glove, on the outer side, the fabric is pleated, to give a rounded effect. A flat bow 6 cms from side to side, trims the curve. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: DARK CREAM SHORT/WRIST LENGTH LEATHER GLOVES, Early 1900's
Clothing. Wrist length, dark cream, machine stitched leather gloves. Machine stitching-two rows, gives the effect of pin-tucks, are sewn in a diagonal direction from the outer wrist, across the back of the hand. The shorter outer stitching, 4 cm long has two 6mm long leather stitches, at right angle to the machine stitching. The second diagonal stitching runs around the top of the glove, and 9.5 cms across the back of the hand. It is offset with three 6 mm stitches at right angles. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: HONEY COLOURED LEATHER WRIST LENGTH GLOVES, 1920-30's
Clothing. Made from soft lambskin, the leather appears to be finely punched all over, giving the appearance of tiny pin holes over the outer surface, but not showing through to the inside. Finely bound at the top edge, and around a 3 cm long round split at the outer wrist. The inside of the leather has a brushed finish-soft and warm. Three rows of stitching on the back of the hand, and around the wrist give a decorative effect.Inside left glove 'LAMBSKINS. Made in Italy. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: BOLERO, Late 1800s
Clothing. Guipure lace and spotted tulle bolero with sleeves. The 8cm cuffs of the sleeves are also guipure lace. The lace is of a floral design with tiny looped picots separating the floral motifs. Sleeves are of spotted tulle (.7 cm spots). The back of the bolero is shallow - just 26 cm deep, while the front dips to two peaks in the centre front.From shoulder to lower edge is 44 cms. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: CREAM TULLE AND BRUSSELLS LACE BOLERO
Clothing. The lower section of this garment has been removed, making an accurate assessment impossible. A beautiful panel of lace from the neckline, dipping to a Vshape at the centre back, has a swirled and leaf design. This design extends over the shoulders and bustline, with a peaked finish below the bust. Bows and spots decorate the below elbow sleeves, and are finished at the lower edge with a panel of lace 8 cm deep at the seam, extending to 15 cms deep at the outer side. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: CAMISOLE, 1880- 1890's
Clothing. White linen camisole with peplum 8.5 cm deep. Round lace yoke at the front, with a panel for a ribbon insertion. Some evidence exists on the right front, that once there was a pink ribbon - possibly silk, but now there are only a few threads left. The insertion panel continues around the back neck edge. Two panels of three .5 cm tucks run from the neckline to the waist of the centre back. Front opening, with two 1 cm pearl buttons still evident, and a cotton tape and casing at the waistline. ON each side of front opening, a group of five pintucks, 7 cm long run from the waistline toward the bustline.All items belonged to Margaret Ann McLean.costume, female, white linen camisole. -

Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: BLOUSE, Late 1870's - 1880's
Clothing. A concealed full length back opening reveals five tiny covered buttons, 7 mm in diameter and five hand-stitched button holes. This opening is bordered by two groups of five very fine pin tucks with a 3 cm spacing between the two groups. The blouse is made from very fine Swiss lawn cotton fabric, and is very soft to the feel. The front has a broad panel thirty cm wide of exquisite pintucks, crochet, lace and embroidery. The embroidery is white on white, and features flowers and leaves in a curved pattern. A crochet panel below the high neckline is 4 cm x 10 cms and is peaked at the lower edge. This is bordered by 1.5 cm wide cotton lace, and horizontal pintucks. Two panels, one on either side of three pintucks, 1.5 cm panel of lace, and then the central panel of embroidery, pintucks, lace, and crochet. Five pintucks, 1.5 cm panel of lace and five more pintucks run the length of the short sleeves. Sleeves are puffed, and gathered at the shoulder, and at the 1.5 cm deep cuff, which is also pintucked. A 1.5 cm deep 'stand-up' collar, spoke-stitched to the garment, as are the sleeves and shoulder seams. Front hemline is curved. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: CAMISOLE, Late 1870-80's
Clothing. Fine white linen fabric. A .8 cm 'tuck' edged at top and bottom with a spoke-stitched border, marks the waistline. Below the waistline is a peplum, split at the centre front with 8 cm deep peaks. These peaks are repeated at the centre back. The peplum tapers to 7 cm deep at side seams. The camisole is trimmed at the top edge with a 4 cm deep band of cotton lace. The top edge of the linen fabric has a double row (off set) of cotton embroidered 'spots' 2 mm in diameter, and three rows of drawn thread work - one cm in width, 3.5 cm wide lace form the shoulder straps. The back opening fastens with six tiny 7cm pearl buttons, and hand-stitched button holes. The lower button fastens with a loop at the waistline 1880-90's. A 'fan' of pintucks, arched from 4 cm long at the ends, to 6 cm long at the centre, fans the midriff at the centre front, above the waistline - 28 tucks in total.costume, female, camisole. -

Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: CAMISOLE, 1880-90's
Clothing. Wide scooped neckline, edged with 1.5 cm deep cotton lace. The centre back opening is fastened with six tiny pearl shell buttons .8 cm in diameter- top button is fastened with a loop. 1.5 cm deep cotton lace trims the neckline and armholes. A .5 cm cotton braid trims the lower edge. Nine floral embroideries and pulled thread work 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm are spaced around the rounded front neckline. Below these embroideries on the left side breast, are embroidered the wearers initials-(M) MB. The owners initials are embroidered on the left front in a decorative manner, to compliment the floral embroidery. A lace ribbon, one cm wide at the waistline passes through 1.4 cm eyelets 2 cm apart. Between each set of eyelets, are groups of 4 cm long fine pintucks - 13 groups of two eyelets and 14 groups of pintucks.costume, female, wide scooped neckline camisole -

Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: CREAM LINEN BODICE, 1880 -90's
Clothing. Very fine, cream linen bodice, with two vertical lace inserts either side of front opening, and three angled inserts from each side seam to the vertical insert. All inserts 2 cms wide. Short cap type sleeves are edged with the same lace, and band of this lace also outlines the wide square neckline. An insert between these bands has a fine, ribbon threaded through, which would act as a draw string. There is a 2.5 cm x 3 cm tab of linen at the centre back, but, no markings are evident. Three .9 cm pearl buttons, with three corresponding machine stitched button holes fasten the front. A cotton tape drawstring, and elastic are encased at the waistline giving the lower edge a peplum effect.costume, female, cream linen bodice -

Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: INFANTS NIGHTDRESS OR CHRISTENING GOWN, Late 1800's early 1900's
Clothing. High lace-edged round neckline - lace 1.3 cm deep. Long sleeves-gathered at the shoulder, and edged at the wrist with a 4.5 cm deep, gathered broderie anglais, featuring a shamrock, and flower design. The bodice has a centre front panel of lace. 9 cm wide at the neckline, tapering to 4 cm wide at the high waistline. This panel is edged with a 4 cm wide scalloped edge at the broiderie anglais trim. Three rows of pintucks, give a finish to the filigree braid, and the gathered broiderie frill. The long skirt is gathered at the lower bodice, and is 70 cms long. The lower 20.5 cms at the hemline has alternate bands of three pintucks, a 4 cm panel of flowers and cutwork broiderie, three pintucks, 4 cm panel panel of broiderie, three pintucks and a 4 cms deep machine stitched hem. Bodice has a back opening, with only one 1 cm diameter covered button evident, a cotton tape passes through a casing, and ties at the back waistline.costume, female, infants nightdress. -

Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: LADIES VICTORIAN ERA KNICKERS WITH DROP SEAT, 1870's
Clothing. White fine linen fabric, trimmed at lower leg with a 2 cms wide cotton , brooierie insertion and a 12 cm wide frill of textured (?) fine linen or cotton lawn broiderie. The front waistband dips to a central 8 cm deep peak. Waistband at side seams, is 4.5 cm deep and back waistband is 10 cm deep at side seams, and the 11 cm deep at centre back. Two 1.4 cm covered buttons close the back waistband. The knickers have a gathered opening panel, called at the time a ''drop-seat'' or ''access hatch'' at the centre back. This panel has a 5 cm deep waistband, fastened at either side by a covered button, and a third button at the centre. These buttons are sewn to the back waistband, and the button holes are sewn, correspondingly on the gathered back. A drawstring tape is also threaded through the back waistband. Clothing. Bed cap. Fine cotton lace crown edged by a 1.5 cm band of insertion lace, which is threaded with a mauve silk ribbon 1 cm wide. This in turn edged with a 6 cm deep frill of cotton lace, featuring flower and leaf design, and has a scalloped edge. Clothing. Cotton fabric featuring floral embroidery and cut work in the Broderie Anglais tradition. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: FOUR LACE COLLARS, Late 1800's
Clothing. Four Collars a. Stand-up lace collar with a shallow scallop at the lower neck edge-6 cm -7 cm deep. Three ''stand-up'' flower motifs and other flat floral motifs form the lace. Five boned and wired casings keep the collar erect. At the centre lower edge fine, cotton fabric is gathered tightly and forms a 10 cm long, fan shaped drop or jabot which in turn has a shield shaped crochet drop 12.5 cm deep with corded and cut-work elements. The stand-up collar is lined with fine cotton net, and fastens at the back with three metal hooks, but no loops are evident. b. Very fine creamy silk (?) stand-up collar. 4.5 cm deep, with a 32 cm deep jabot front. The same lace as the collar, edges the Vshaped front jabot. In the centre of this jabot is a stylized maltese cross, which also features at the front of the collar. No fastenings are visible at the neckline. c.This item is of the same design as 14.b, but is slightly larger.Cream cotton or silk, the collar is 6 cms deep at the centre front, and features a Maltese Cross shape at the centre front of the collar, and the jabot front. Ten floral motifs are spaced around the collar, and the same lace outlines the edges of the jabot front. No fastenings are evident. d. Collar. 8.5 cm deep at the centre back, shaped to 6.5 cm deep at the centre front. Jabot 2 cm wide at top, 10.5 cm wide at lower edge, then shaped to a point at the very lower edge. Floral elements and eyelets form the design. Centre back has six eyelets at each edge-perhaps laced to fasten. Two 5.5 cm long x .3 cm wide bones are encased on the front of collar, to support it in the front.costume, female, lace collar and jabot front
