This is a set of nine photographs of cartographic typesetting equipment and personnel in Cartographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1968 to 1979. The rooms on the top floor of Fortuna Villa where the photos were taken were formally the nursery and boys bedrooms during the Lansell family’s occupation of the building. The Fotosetter type setting machine replaced the letterpress method of type production in 1956. Its operator entered the text using a type order provided by cartographic draughtsmen/ draughtswomen. The type was output on a film positive, which was contacted onto strip film. The text was cut out by cartographic draughtsmen/ draughtswomen and affixed onto type sheets using bees wax. Cartographic Squadron’s CPL Arty Lane specialised in the operation of the Fotosetter type setting machine for many years, as shown in photos .3P and .4P. For more information on the Fotosetter, see page 71 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. The computer based Editwriter Model 7500 typesetting system was introduced in 1975 as a replacement to the aging Fotosetter. It was operated by a specialised technician, who generated a large variety of map type styles and sizes quickly and reliably, as well as text panels. Output on Copy proof adhesive backed stripping type film replaced messy wax and spray adhesives in 1978. The Editwriter capability supported all RASvy units and its contractor type setting requirements. SGT Jim McDonald operated the Editwriter for a couple of years in the late 1970’s. He is seen in photos .7P and .8P. reading off a type order and entering text into the computer. See item 6181.23P, photo .1P for a reduced scale photo of SGT Jim McDonald undertaking this task. Also see item 6123.12P photos .1P and .2P featuring CPL Paul Richards, who was another technician that operated the Editwriter for several years in the 1980s. The Monotype Photolettering Machine seen in photos .5P and .6P is understood to be in service for a shorter period, as it was not as productive compared to the Fotosetter and Editwriter. These eight photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio at Bendigo in November 1978. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. This is a set of six staff photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s Officers, Warrant Officers and Sergeants, and each of its four Squadrons at Fortuna, Bendigo in December 1982. Note - Air Survey Squadron’s photo was probably taken in July 1982 as they appear in winter dress. Air Survey Squadron was responsible for aerotriangulation, photogrammetric feature extraction and the AUTOMAP 1 system. Typical tasks were flight planning the acquisition of aerial photography, pugging, mensuration and block adjustments, photogrammetric extraction of topographic features from aerial photography, digital feature editing, map compilation, operating the scanner/plotter, operating the AUTOMAP 1 system and computer programming by civilians. Cartographic Squadron was responsible for the production of the following military products: Joint Operation Graphics, small-scale RAAF Air Charts, large-scale topographic line maps and orthophotomaps. Cartographic technician tasks were scribing, compiling, retouching, masking, type setting, type stickup, terrain embossing, correcting and proving quality control. Headquarters Squadron was responsible for the planning and coordination of map production and contracts. It also performed administrative and support functions such as personnel administration, pay, finance, transportation, records, map Library, kitchens, messes and facility maintenance. It was staffed by Army personnel from RASvy, RACT, AACC, RAAOC and RAEME corps. Other supporting staff at this time included the RAAF Liaison Officer, RAN Liaison Officer and several civilians employed in administration, the Q-Store and grounds maintenance. A component of the Army Svy Regt’s cartographic map production was carried out by the Detachment, a sub-unit located at Bonegilla next to the School of Military Survey. Lithographic Squadron was responsible for the reproduction of map materials and printing of military map products. The main tasks undertaken by photographic technicians were photographic enlargements, reductions and duplication of map reproduction material and processing of aerial photography. This set of 38 black and white photographs were taken at the Army Survey Regiment’s parade rehearsal held at Fortuna, Bendigo in 1980. The rehearsal was for the Freedom of Entry parade held 1-2 weeks later in 1980. The exact date for the Freedom of Entry parade is not known. The Freedom of Entry to the City of Bendigo was an honour first conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. The Freedom of Entry parade in 1980 was the fourth time the unit exercised its right of freedom of entry. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980 and 1995. This is a photograph of the Director Survey - COL Simon Lemon, CO Army Svy Regt - LTCOL Bob McHenry and probably OC Litho - MAJ Terry Lord inspecting the 1St topographic map printed on the new Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 Printing Press in c1992. *Estimated date based on the Director’s and CO’s period of appointment. The computer-controlled five colour lithographic offset printing press provided the Royal Australian Survey Corps vastly improved printing capability, as the five colours for a standard topographic map was printed in a single pass. The print room was named Wayzgoose Hall after a medieval printing house festival. Wayzgoose Hall and the Speedmaster printing capability was commissioned by the Commander of the 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC on Wednesday 27th June 1990. This occasion is covered in more detail in page 145 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. These four photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio at Bendigo c1982. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The two sports featuring in these photos are touch football and tug-of-war. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. This is a set of seven photographs of Army Survey Regiment personnel undertaking live fire SLR rifle qualification training at Wellsford Rifle Range, Bendigo 1985. This was the last of six regimental training objectives outlined in the administrative instruction – Exercise “City Soldier” accompanying these photos. The other objectives were SLR rifle and M30 grenade handling revision, and first aid at Fortuna; and navigation and RATEL at Wellsford Forest. Personnel from Air Survey, Cartographic, Lithographic and Headquarters Squadrons were reallocated to four training platoons for one week from 7th to 11th October 1985. This photo of WO2 Don Taylor and D-SVY COL Frank Buckland OBE was taken during a tour by D-SVY through Topographic Squadron at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1971. Wild B8 Aviograph Stereoplotters are visible inside the windows in the background. BRIG Frank Buckland OBE served in the Australian Army from 01 June 1938 to 31st of October 1972. LTCOL Frank Buckland was the CO of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment from 1962 to 1965. After promotion to COL Buckland was appointed as Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from March 1967 to August 1972. COL Buckland was promoted to Brigadier (retired) to the honorary position as Colonel Commandant from January 1973 to January 1976. WO2 Don Taylor served in the Australian Army from 24th October 1960 to 31st December 1987 and ended his service as a commissioned officer and reached the rank of Major. The Bendigo Easter Fair was established in 1871 to fundraise for the hospital and the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum. Annie Mary (Mollie) Sibson was a nursing sister at the Bendigo Hospital in the late 1920's and early 1930's until her marriage to Dr Eugene Sandner in 1933, although Mollie did continue to hold an unpaid position on the Board of Management of the hospital for many years afterwards. Bendigo's Cenotaph by Dacre Smyth 1988. Bendigo's War Memorial in the city centre is a half size replica of the famous Cenotaph in London. Some 4-1/2 metres high, the Bendigo RSL President described it as the best country Memorial in Australia during its rededication just before ANZAC Day 1988 following its extensive refurbishment. It had first been dedicated in June 1957 and it is normally flood lit at night. It is not known for sure when the painting was donated to the Bendigo RSL but it was hanging in the Foyer years before the Soldiers Memorial Institute became a Museum in 1998. This is a set of 10 photographs of Cartographic Squadron technicians undertaking map production tasks in at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1968 to 1975. Production was undertaken on the top floor of Fortuna Villa. The Fotosetter type setting machine shown in photos .1P and .2P. replaced the letterpress method of type production in 1956. CPL Arty Lane specialised in the operation of the Fotosetter type setting machine for many years. The computer based Editwriter Model 7500 typesetting system shown in photos .3P and .4P. was introduced in 1975 as a replacement to the aging Fotosetter. It was operated by a specialised technician, who generated a large variety of map type styles and sizes quickly and reliably, as well as text panels. Output on Copy proof adhesive backed stripping type film replaced messy wax and spray adhesives in 1978. The Editwriter capability supported all RASvy units and its contractor type setting requirements. The Aristo Co-ordinatorgraph shown in photos .5P to .7P was introduced in 1962. It was a large heavy steel framed light table with a scribing head that moved in a XY direction using a vernier calibrated measuring scale to 0.001 of an inch. Whilst hand operated it was much quicker and accurate than manual grid and graticule calculation, plotting and scribing. The scribing process as shown in photos .8P to .9P was the cartographic process of drafting features such as drainage, relief, vegetation, roads and culture on specially coated map reproduction material. The cartographic technician scribed out the map feature such as a contour to a specified line width on the map sheet, using a tool affixed with a sapphire tipped cutter.
