Stewart & Co Photographers operated from various addresses Bourke St., East Melbourne from 1874 through 1905 They were at 217 Bourke Street from 1874 through 1889. By 1890 they had moved to 42 Bourke Street. Possible date range is 1874-1889. The girl appears to be about 1 years of age. If she is Sarah and Charles's first child, Florence May Aldous then the date would be c.1884. Newspaper Clipping - from The Argus 28 October 1940, titled "Last of Cable Trams / Quiet passing after secret send-off", about the closure of the Bourke St cable tram routes the previous Saturday nights when the trams were withdrawn prior to the schedule time and replaced by buses. Gives details of the last tram, crews etc. Notes the driver of the last Nicholson St tram as J. Peden, conductor A. C. Craven, Mr. M. McSweeney as the bus depot dispatcher, Mr. E. Lang as the first driver and conductor, Mr. J. Lee. Also quotes Mr Bell that the tram tracks would be kept in running order if needed, but new cables would be needed. A check with Trove shows the Argus as the source of the newspaper. On the rear of the cutting (3rd last item) is a note that Mr. J. K. Set of two reports regarding the difficulties of leasing the former MMTB head office building at 673 Bourke St following the move into the Little Collins Street building in 1936. .1 - Six page typed, part carbon copy, report (note the fist page has the carbon copy of another page in the report on the rear) Notes the extensive discussions with the Post Masters General Department, problems with discussions with the Board's agent, Mr. J. G. Membrey, possible sale of the building, issues within the PMG over leasing buildings, discussions with Bushell's Tea Company, lease to the RSL, then the RSSILA, through a Mr Bett, who then was in talks with the PMG to sub-lease the building, discussions with the Chairman, Mr. Cameron, which occurred. What a mess! .2 - two page carbon copy of report from Mr. J. G. Membrey to the MMTB discussion the issues with the lease, PMG, Mr. Bell and part occupied by the Radio Times. In this image the woman appears wearing a thick wedding band on her left hand. She has a similar resemblance to Sarah Ann Shillinglaw (nee Kidd) and could possibly be a sister. The only sister that the timeline would fit would be Caroline Fairlie Kidd who married Alexander Kirk Stewart 7 Apr 1885 at Richmond, Victoria. The family then lived at Diamond Creek. Johnstone O'Shannessy & Co Photographers operated from 3 Bourke Street from approximately 1865 through 1885. By 1890 they had relocated to 234 Collins Street.The dress is less tailor made and form fitted which appeared from the mid 1880s suggesting this image is circa 1880-1885. Photo of tram 27 by the Ballarat Courier. Date of Photo. 29/6/1968, taken prior to the TMSV Tour of that date. Photograph - sepia. A portrait of Mr Arthur Simpson, Eaglehawk, Cordial Manufacturer. Arthur Simpson was born in 1862 in Sandhurst, died in 1921, aged 59 at Eaglehawk (Reg.No. 1388). Arthur's father was Alexander Simpson, mother was Jane Buswell. Arthur married Elizabeth (Amelia) Duncan in 1859 (Reg.No.3150). A child of theirs was Marjory Pearl, died 1978, aged 84 at Kyneton (Reg.No.11683) married Claude Francis Halsall in 1922. In 2002, their son, Robert Halsall sent BHS these photo's and information.Stewart & Co.
