The Alistair Knox Collection (Image 2A) The Alistair Knox Collection is a series of mounted enlarged photos of mud brick houses and related subjects. The collection is understood to have been put together by Alistair Knox although it is the work of several unacknowledged photographers. For some years it was held by the Building Department of the former Eltham Shire Council and was then passed to our Society for safekeeping. Some of the photos have been used in Knox's books and from time to time some of them have been part of various historical displays. Henry Pewtress was a sub-inspector of Victoria Police. He was in charge of the Mansfield area when the three police were killed by the Kelly Gang at Stringybark Creek. Pewtress organised the search party but having little local knowledge he went to see Dr Samuel Reynolds and others. They located the bodies of Lonigan and Scanlan easily, but did not find Kenney's until three days later. He was subsequently a member of the murdered Police Memorial Fund established in the Mansfield area after the death of Lonigan, Scanlan and Kennedy in October 1878.Mounted black and white image of Henry Pewtress. The museum register is somewhat ambiguous but it is recorded - along with about 12 others - that this specimen was transferred from the 'Nat. Sc. Dept' in September 1899. The specimen also apparently has something to do with Frederick McCoy; his name is entered as the party that identified the skeleton. It seems certain that these were a batch (accession numbers MUZD1113-1126) of specimens given to the university teaching museum during the move of the state museum from the university campus to its subsequent site on Russell St. Examination of the Currawong skeleton (and some of the others in this batch) revels that the specimen has been remounted at some point.
