Copies of newsletters to Legacy widows in 1960s. There were usually 5 editions per year (in 1965 February, April, July, October and November). Newsletters include a notice from the Senior Widows Club coordinator F R G Strickland and information about events and meetings. The editor was Mrs B E Shephard. There were so many widows that the meetings had to be held at the Melbourne Town Hall to accomodate the numbers. November's meeting was a picnic in the Botanical Gardens and January the widows met in Fitzroy Gardens. In November there were calls for nominations for the committee members for the following year. Committee comprised of a President, 2 Vice presidents, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, Hon. Assistant Secretary and 14 members of the committee. The first edition in the new format was in 1960, previously there had been a quarterly magazine but the distribution was limited, they changed to a 4 page newsletter format to reach more of the widows. The newsletter was priced at 1D a copy. Various pages of interest have been added to show different news items. Newspaper clipping titled: “Brewery Truck Rips Tram: 2 die” The Sun Friday August 7 1970 Photos and text “Tram crowd hit by casks” Queens Parade Two passengers died when tram and brewery truck crashed at Clifton Hill (Thursday August 8 1970). Twenty-two people were injured, two seriously. Semi-trailer owned by Carlton and United Breweries. Tram driver Graham Barry McPhee, 31, was injured. Semi-trailer travelling along Queen’s Pde towards the city. No 88 tram bound for East Preston was just completing a turn from Smith St into Queen’s Pde. Six ambulances took 12 people to St Vincent’s and Royal Melbourne Hospitals. Police charged truck driver, 39, on two counts of manslaughter, and also charged driving under the influence of alcohol and exceeding .05. From 1851 the Victorian government required all men on Victorian Goldfields to carry a Gold License. The fee was one pound per month, and was payable in advance. There was agitation surrounding the gold license which was thought to be an excessive fee and did not give the bearer right to representation. On 03 December 1854 the gold diggers on the Eureka Lead fought a short battle against the army and police troopers. A few months later a new system of taxing gold diggers was introduced - the Miner's Right.The Victorian Gold Licence was issued from 1851 until early 1855. Every man on a Victorian goldfield had to carry a valid gold license, so few survived the harsh treatment of being carried around a working goldfield. There was much dissatisfaction about what was thought to be an unfair mining tax (or gold license). On 29 November 1854 Ballarat miners burnt their licenses on Bakery Hill. On 3 December 1854 the Eureka Stockade Battle took place, resulting in the Goldfields Commission. The first Miner's Right was issued in late June 1855, and in July the first Local Courts were elected by miner's right holders. The two Fitnall Gold Licenses are important because they were issued on either side of the Eureka Stockade, and are in very good condition. The Gold Licenses were donated to the Ballarat School of Mines by John Wilson in 1921. Two gold licenses issued by the Colony of Victoria.
