Photos of gathering at the Legacy Garden of Appreciation for the installation of the ‘Widow and Children’ statue by Louis Laumen - a Melbourne artist. The statue dedication was held on 29 September 1998. The plaque at the garden says “A living tribute to the generous support of Victorians for the work of Legacy. The sculpture symbolises the work of Legacy caring for the widows and children of veterans. This item is part of the Dodgson Collection, which was bequeathed to Queen's College in 1892 by the Rev. James Dodgson. The collection was created by Aquila Dodgson, brother of James. Aquila Dodgson was a friend of the English Egyptologist Flinders Petrie, and it was through this friendship the Aquila was able to acquire ancient Egyptian artefacts. Colour film that is 10 min 29 sec in duration, 16 mm sound. 28th Melbourne Legacy Children's commemoration ceremony on the eve of Anzac Day at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne 1959, attended by the Governor, Sir Dallas Brooks, who gave an address. The President of Melbourne Legacy, Legatee McKeddie, conducted the wreath laying in the Inner Shrine. 2,500 children from 254 Melbourne Schools attended the ceremony, which was simultaneously broadcast by the ABC throughout Victoria, and over 200,000 children participated. Filmed by The Melbourne Repertory Film Unit, cameras Eric Aitken, David Corke, Ian Hanna and Jack Semmens, musical recording by Leo Fowler, music by Felix Werder, directed by Ian Hanna. This film has been digitised to preserve its content. Photo of Legatee Ian Richardson at the students Anzac commemoration ceremony on 28 April 1987. His medals include the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Distinguished Flying Medal. He appears to be holding a tray of rosemary that Legacy Widows prepare for Anzac Day services. Was found in an envelope marked "For Melbourne Legacy. Anzac Day Parade featuring Legacy Lads.' From TROVE: an article from June 1944 mentions him receiving his DFM for 'SKILL AND COURAGE Flying-Officer Richardson, a navigator, has completed a second operational tour. He is an exceptional navigator, whose skill and coolness in time of stress have inspired confidence among his crew.' According to Forces War Records UK, the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) is awarded to Officers and Warrant officers for "an act or acts of valour and courage or devotion to duty performed whilst flying in active operations against the enemy". A newsletter covering the activities of Melbourne Legacy Widows' Club. The October edition covers a 2007 reunion of former Junior Legatees. Generally The Answer includes photos of events, a notice from the Chairman of the Widows' Committee, dates of meetings, possible day trips and theatre outings, and cruises. The ladies were welcome to attend many activities including, swimming exercise classes, stamp group, craft, walking group, Monday Concerts, plus the annual fete and Christmas concert. The first edition of the newsletter was in 1960, previously there had been a quarterly magazine but the distribution was limited, they changed to a 4 page newsletter format to reach more of the widows. The September 1992 edition of the Melbourne Legacy newsletter was the first to be called 'The Answer'. The name comes from the verses that guides the work of Legacy - 'In Flanders Field' and 'The Answer'. Chaplain John Brownbill served in the Korean War, and was part of the Army Reserve in later years. Gerald Cudmore served as Padre with 1RAR in Vietnam in 1965/66 and was the first Branch Padre of the RAR Association in Victoria. At the time this image was taken Gerald Cudmore was the Vicar General of Melbourne. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day.
