Instrument - Fob Watch, 1920-30s
Fob (or pocket) watches were developed in Europe in the 16th century and gained wide usage during the mid 18th century until World War 1 when the wristwatch was invented. These watches were designed to be carried in a small pocket and attached through the means of a 'fob' which could be a chain or made from a variety of materials such as leather. Their popularity peaked in the nineteenth century where they were an important part of middle and lower class society as well. The inclusion of the word RAILWAY on the face of the watch suggests a possible use by an employee of the railways. This item is of social significance as fob / pocket watches were valued as an essential object in all levels of society. For some occupations, such as the railroads, it was a necessary tool of the job. Steel Railway Lever open face pocket / fob watch dated 1920s-1930s. The white dial has large black arabic numerals and outer minute divisions around the edge. A circular insert and small hand to show the seconds is at the bottom of the watch face. The hour hand is a rounded leaf shape, and the minute hand a thin diamond shape. Both hands and the small rounded end of the second hand reflect a metallic blue sheen in the right lighting. The words RAILWAY LEVER, 15 JL and SWISS MADE are on the dial. The lever set on watches was a requirement for railroad watches. It required a two step process for the hands to be adjusted. 15 JL refers to the movement being a 15 jewel one.The front dial of the watch has the words 15 JL, RAILWAY LEVER, and SWISS MADE. flagstaff hill maritime museum and village, warrnambool, great ocean road, shipwreck coast, fob watch, pocket watch, watch, horology, time keeper, swiss made, railway lever, 15 jl, 15 jewel -

Flag - Civil flag of the Kingdom of Italy, Circa 1940
The flag of Sardinia was adopted as the official flag of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy in 1861. The flag incorporates the armorial bearings of the Royal House of Savoy, the family who ruled Italy until it voted to become a republic in 1948. Civil flag of the Kingdom of Italy featuring three vertical panels of green (hoist) white and red cotton, sewn together. Sewn into each side of the centre (white) panel is a representation of the coat of arms of the House of Savoy - a blue-bordered red square, quartered by a white cross. This flag would later become the flag of the Kingdom of Italy, and the tricolor without the Savoyard escutcheon remains the flag of Italy. The exact date of the creation of this flag is uncertain, however as it was in use in Italy until the formal establishment of the Italian Republic, it may have been made between 1848 and 1946. This particular flag was brought back at the conclusion of WWII and donated to the Terang RSL Sub-branch.The Civil flag of the Kingdom of Italy is comprised of a red, white and green vertical cotton panels, which have been stitched together by cotton. Each panel is approximately 915 cm wide by 1.610 metres high. The centre panel has an appliquéd Savoy shield, with a centred white cross on red background, surrounded by a blue shield shaped border. -

Ammoniaphone, Dr. Carter Moffatt, Medical Battery Co, Voice Ammoniaphone and Box, Circa 1871-1900
The "Ammoniaphone" was developed by Dr. Carter Moffat in 1870 as an instrument to replicate the fresh Italian air and its qualities that seemed to assist with Italian vocalists. The Ammoniaphone was filled at both ends with a mixture of ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and peppermint oil, and the user inhaled the chemicals from the small tube in the centre. According to Dr. Moffatt, the Ammoniaphone was benefical to public speakers, Parliamentarians, vocalists, as well as assisting with bronchitis and consumption.Important to the collection due to its rarity and historical significance, as well as medical research capability.A long metal tube into which ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and peppermint oil were placed. The user inhaled the chemicals through the small tube in the centre of the object. It was thought to improve the voice through the inhalation of "artificial Italian air". Comes with the original box and instruction booklet."Medical Battery Co. 52 Oxford Street, London W"medical, quackery, voice alteration, consumption, ammoniaphone -
