Note by T.H. Kneen 8 July 1992, "The reference to the planting of this tree in "Green Grows Our Garden" is not correct. Correspondence from Charles French held in the archives indicates that the Horticultural Society of Victoria met at Burnley in 1857 and Charles French then an apprentice in a nursery at Richmond was asked to plant the tree. The Norman Oliver collection. Norman Oliver was three times Mayor of Bendigo - 1950-51, 1964-65, 1970-71. One typed paged titled 'Bendigo Municipal Free Library Report for the month of April 1953'. Norman J. Oliver is stamped in the top right hand corner. The report is signed : (SGD) T.H. Woodrow Librarian. There are some number calculations jotted in pencil at the bottom of the page. The presence of insect proof cages within the large enclosure suggests the photo is post WWII. Eventually the P.R.L. (Plant Research Laboratory) Developed adequate facilities close to the Laboratory and the ground was resumed for the use of the College. Note by T.H. Kneen," After the transfer of the small dairy herd to Glenormiston and later Longerenong the milking shed was modified to serve as a machinery shop. Late in 1990 and early in 1991 it was converted for use as the Horticultural College Centenary Centre and as a new home for the Horticultural Shop. Half the space on ground floor level was devoted to a display "A Centenary of Horticultural Education." The old loft area was fitted out as the office for the Executive Officer for the Centenary Celebrations and the storage of archival material."
