Thomas John Barton was born in 1836 in Gloucestershire and after his father died in 1850 arrived in Melbourne in 1852 along with his mother, adult sisters, younger brothers, his uncle, his uncle's wife Suzanna and their family. Thomas tried gold mining at Woods Point but found it too difficult. He then partnered with Ewen Hugh Cameron to provide the miners with meat. In 1864 they purchased a plot of land in Marysville and set up a butchers/abattoirs and from there began their business of taking supplies to the miners at the nearby Woods Point and Jamieson goldfields. In 1865 the business was firmly established and Thomas married Selina Croker at Heidelberg and brought her back to Marysville. Their first home was 'The Chestnuts', which included the store, and was situated on the town side next to the Steavenson River. Sadly, in 1876 Selina died of complications after giving birth to their sixth child. Thomas was in need of a nanny to care for his six children, including the newborn baby, and so he employed Emily Ada Sparke, who is the eldest daughter of the local school teacher. Thomas and Emily subsequently marry in 1878 and they go on to have a further 10 children over the next several years. Thomas assisted in the establishment of the first school in Marysville in 1870 and remained a very active member of the community including as a Councillor for the Shire of Healesville, Shire President and he was also appointed as a Justice of the Peace. Thomas died in Carlton in 1911. MMTB Tourist Bus No 79, Leyland TS8 chassis with the Canadian Carriage company body. The first photo shows a light livery when it was new in 1939 and the second a darker livery, the late 1940s. The first photo shows some possible damage to the front bumper bar. This was the second MMTB tourist bus. Imported by MMTB Chairman Bell from Canada in 1939. The body was built by the Canadian Car Co. Because of WW2, it was put into normal passenger service in July 1940 and had a mundane existence from that time onwards. It was sold to Melbourne Brighton Bus Lines however they never used it. See Reg Item 5112 for a photo of the bus in poor condition. Tourist brochures have been produced in Warrnambool since the 1890s and this one has been published by the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Some of the photographs for this brochure come from the Warrnambool Standard newspaper and the information on the car tours was provided by the Warrnambool Tourist Information Centre. Tourism in the Warrnambool region has always been of major importance to the town/city and a local Chamber of Commerce or Tourists’ Association has been active in the area for over 100 years. Today the official tourist guides are produced by the Warrnambool City Council. This brochure is a good example of local tourism promotion in the 1970s and will also be useful for display. This is a small booklet (1975) containing 39 pages. It has local Warrnambool advertisements, maps, photographs, printed material and details of 9 tours that tourists could take by car around Warrnambool. The pages are stapled. The front cover has a blue-tinged image of a surf boat patrol and the back cover has a black and white photograph of Warrnambool’s beach. This Holiday Guide was produced by the Warrnambool Standard with several articles contributed to the supplement by Sally Clark, the Warrnambool Tourist Promotion Officer. Holiday Guides were produced each year to assist and promote tourism in the area. The fact that Warrnambool had won the Premier Town Award for the years 1979-1982 was an added reason for tourists to come to the region and this fact was used as an advertising tool. Warrnambool won the Premier Town Award in 1988 for the third time. This Holiday Guide is of some interest as it shows what was considered the best places for tourists to visit in the Warrnambool region in 1980. The advertisements are also of some value for recording the business life of the city in 1980. This is a 40 page Holiday Guide published by the Warrnambool Standard newspaper in 1980 featuring tourist spots of Warrnambool and district.
