Document, About In Flanders Fields and the man who wrote it
A memo from Legatee Frank Doolan about the poem In Flanders Field and the discussion about the correct wording. There was some discussion about whether it was 'poppies blow' or 'poppies grow'. The article was from 'The Star Weekly' of Toronto about the John McCrae poem. The poem is significant for legacy as the final verse mentions the torch that is used in the Legacy logo. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. The items have been catalogued separately.Details about the poem that inspires the torch symbol of Legacy. Bottle, R F Kennedy Chemist
This bottle was used in the pharmacy of R. F. Kennedy of Warrnambool. It has on it the well-known Kennedy symbol of a lighthouse on a rocky cliff on a coastline with ships in the distance. Richard Frank Kennedy (1826-1903) was born in England and came to Warrnambool in the early 1880s. He established a large pharmacy in Timor Street with a retail, wholesale and manufacturing business. In 1891 he erected a new building which was described as one of the most elegant and best-stocked chemist shops in Victoria. Kennedy was active in Warrnambool community affairs and was a foundation member of the Warrnambool Bowls Club, being its first Vice-President and an early President. The business continued after Kennedy’s death, trading as ‘R.F.Kennedy and Co.’ Richard Frank Kennedy was one of the most significant businessmen in Warrnambool in the late 19th century. The products of his chemist shop and factory were distributed all over Victoria and beyond. This item is a very good example of a Kennedy bottle. This is a small clear glass bottle used in the pharmacy of R.F. Kennedy. It has a rectangular-shaped body with rounded edges, a circular-shaped neck and a circular top moulded over the neck. There is no stopper. The name and logo of the chemist are embossed on the side of the bottle and the name of the maker is on the base. ‘R.F. Kennedy Chemist Warrnambool’ ‘W.T & Co. U.S.A.’ ‘Pat. Tea Cup, Huddart Parker Line Tea Cup, 1950
Huddart Parker traded between 1876 and 1961. It was established in 1876 by James Huddart, T.J. Parker, John Traill and Captain T. Webb. The business rapidly expanded and was travelling between Melbourne and Sydney by 1882 and Melbourne to Adelaide from 1886. The Company was established in Geelong but moved its offices to Melbourne by 1890.It is likely this tea cup was used on the Huddart Parker shipping line some time from 1950 to the company's closure in 1961. Historically, the early establishment of the company in Geelong is significant for the region. The object is significant for its connection to Victorian transport from regional ports to larger cities. It is a good example of mid 20th Century hotelware and Duraline offerred 'unchippable crockery' for utilitarian purposes. Duraline was imported by Loftus Moran P/L who were based in South Melbourne and supplied the ware to hotels and institutions across Victoria.
