With Federation all but a fact Alfred Deakin is again in the Overton area but his meeting has been cancelled. While Montieth is getting some stores he and MacLough observe the drama on the bridge from the nearby Post Office verandah. Coming on top of the deaths of the O'Haras these scenes appal Deakin. In reply to MacLough he says that Federation will do away with the border, and bring free trade between the states of the new Australian Commonwealth. This will permit O'Day to come home as a free man. MacLough queries the fine and Deakin says that it must be paid, but he will have it reduced to £200. On hearing this MacLough declares he will pay the fine himself, and give O'Day a half share partnership in Gooloora as well.The album and images are significant because they document literature written by a prominent member of the Wodonga community. This banner was one of five banners gifted to the Beechworth Chinese community in recognition of their support of the Hospital and Benevolent Asylum in 1875, from the Carnival Committee. These banners had been purchased in China by a social envoy from Beechworth then presented to the Chinese community during the Beechworth Fine Arts Exhibition in May of that same year, by Donald Fiddes, President of the Ovens District Hospital. The Burke Museum's Chinese Collection presents the history of Chinese settlement in Beechworth from 1856 and its involvement in local community affairs in the second half of the 19th century. In settling in the area they formed their own community with distinctive Chinese cultural traditions, forming their own 'camps' with laid out streets, housing a Temple, Chinese Theatre and restaurants, hotels, stores, gambling houses and dwellings. Members of the Chinese community took an active interest in town affairs and were generous donors to the appeal to build the Ovens District Hospital in 1856/7. The vibrant colours and dynamic graphics of the silk embroidered Chinese banners were a highlight of Beechworth Charitable processions that took place in the main street. Two of the Chinese banners were conserved for the Burke Museum in 2006 by Carol Campbell of Phoenix Conservation Services with funding from Victoria’s Heritage Grants. In 2015, with the enormous support of the Copland Foundation and fundraising activities by the Friends of the Bur Museum Committee, conservation of the third banner was undertaken by Artlab Australia in Adelaide.The banners display traditional Chinese textile techniques and are visually beautiful and very rare and are considered of local and national significance, with the potential to be deemed internationally significant.The banner has a narrow fuchsia embroidered top border, a wider embroidered panel depicting 2 dogs with embroidered Chinese text and a larger lower panel with the embroidered text “PRESENTED TO THE CHINESE OF BEECHWORTH BY THE COMMITEES OF THE PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS (missing) THAT TOWN IN COMMEMOR (missing) OF THE CARNIVAL 1873” The 2 lower panels have narrow decorative borders decorated with mirrors and extensive embroidery. These albums were put together by Allen Clarke, who worked for the State Electricity Commission of Victoria for over 40 years. He was also a member of the Senior Citizens Club. He collected theses press cuttings, put them in these albums and donated them to the Mt Beauty Senior's Club.1. According to the front page this autograph book belonged to Patricia Spencer of Spencer Street, Dartmoor. Dartmoor is a small settlement on the Princes Highway between Heywood and the South Australian border. It was first settled in the late 1850s and the main industry is the processing of timber from the surrounding pine plantations. Patricia Spencer attended Warrnambool High School in the late1930s and this album contains a number of entries from Warrnambool High School in 1938. It also has a page of eleven signatures of the Head Master, George Langley and other teachers from Warrnambool High School. There are also entries from people from Mortlake and Panmure and other entries with the person’s address not indicated. Autograph books such as this one were commonly owned by young people in the 19th and 20th centuries (up to about 1950) and were very popular with young girls.This album, although incomplete and tattered, is of interest because it is a good example of the social custom, more popular a couple of generations back than it is today, of young people owning and obtaining signatures and verses from their friends and acquaintances. It is also important because it contains signatures of Warrnambool High School teachers in 1938 and there are other entries of interest. This is a small autograph album that was originally bound with a cardboard cover with red leather backing but now has no front cover and only part of the back cover. The pages are all loose and the front section (buff-coloured) has a cardboard piece with felt padding. The pages are coloured in a variety of pastel tones and there are many handwritten entries of verses and signatures, with several from the ‘B’ Form, 1938, of ‘W.H.S. (Warrnambool High School). The album appears to have belonged to Patricia Spencer from Dartmoor. Some of the pages are torn and stained. A folded cardboard printed Christmas card with paper insert from a soldier stationed in Egypt. The card has a small, sepia coloured photograph of an Egyptian scene showing some pyramids attached to the front and has a ribbon tied in a bow threaded through the cover and insert. A handwritten note "Wishing you a merry Christmas and a bright New Year with best love and wishes" is written on the insert opening, on the opposite side of the insert opening is a printed message wishing the recipient a merry Christmas. The card is addressed to Dear Rene from Les Suitor, dated November 14th, 1915.The card front page is printed in sepia tones: "Greetings from a soldier boy in Egypt", "1915 - 1916".

The photograph shows the location of the concrete, horseshoe shaped gun emplacement erected for the cannons. It is part of the Historic Precinct on Flagstaff Hill. The area was accessed either through the space between the Lighthouses (through the cottage grounds) or a service entrance, past the iron huts used by the Lands Department. This photograph, a print, is one of a set of five that show the site of Flagstaff Hill. It is presumed to have been taken by John Lindsay, Founding Director of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. One of the photographs in the set has the pencil inscription "Photo J Lindsay". It was taken in the early 1970s during the initial stages of the development of Flagstaff Hill as a Museum and Maritime Village. The photographs belonged to the donor's grandparents, who lived in the Warrnambool district of Allansford/Naringal. The photograph is a record of the site and surrounds of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village before its development and opening in 1975. It shows the east side of the Surfside Holiday Park in its earlier days. The correspondent of The Argus recorded that: "The Parliament of the Commonwealth was opened yesterday by the Duke, of Cornwall and York, under a Commission signed by Queen Victoria and subsequently endorsed by King Edward VII. The ceremony was marked by the splendour and solemn impressiveness which befitted its historic importance. ... To-day the Heir to the Throne will review some 15,000 Australian troops at Flemington. ... It is a function which, on a lesser scale, might have been arranged at any time for many years past; but it could never previously have conveyed the meaning it does now. Soldiering was popularly regarded as a pastime here until South Africa tried the mettle of our men. It is serious business from henceforth. Those who followed the nascent aspirations of the volunteer soldiery in Australia must be impressed at the rapidity of their fulfillment. ... The document design has artistic and aesthetic merit. While it is not rare, it is representative of the kinds of formal designs used for the Australian Commonwealth celebrations at the time of Federation, and is in excellent condition. Such items as this invitation have local, state and national historic significance as mementoes of a key moment in Australia's history. Locally, the invitation is part of a group of Federation-related items issued to James Maitland Campbell (and his wife). Campbell was three times mayor of Kew in the second half of the 19th Century and the owner of Ramornie in Pakington Street, one of the significant extant mansions in Kew. An invitation, mounted on card to the Royal Review held at Flemington racecourse on Friday 10 May 1901, as part of the Government of Victoria's Australian Commonwealth Celebrations. The border is vividly decorated with flags, shields and a large coat of arms. The photographic images depict various scenes of Flemington in Melbourne, in addition to two separate portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York. Illustrations of military servicemen on foot and horseback flank the central block of text. The invitation was addressed to Mr & Mrs J. M. Campbell. Julian Newton-Brown arrived at Falls Creek in 1957. He had studied Pharmacy at Melbourne University. After developing a love for the mountains, Julian moved to Mt. Beauty and then Falls Creek. He worked for the SEC in the test laboratory at Rocky Valley reading weather instruments. By working several jobs, Julian was able to build a small lodge of 10 beds named “Arundel”, located at 18 Slalom Street, Falls Creek. The lodge is now the “Elk at Falls”. Arundel prospered and Julian extended it to include 32 beds and changed its name to "Julian’s” in 1961. When alcohol restrictions were eased in Falls Creek, Julian built a night club which he called “Big Julian’s” and later “THE MAN”. When Julian and his wife Beth retired and left Falls Creek, their son took over running the lodge. An active community man, Julian was a member of the Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce, a member of the SES, a stakeholder in Falls Creek, an author and a documentary maker. Julian Newton-Brown died in May 2020. In 2003 when this flyer was published operation of Julian's Lodge transferred from Julian and is wife Beth to their son Charlie Brown, a former Australian Champion and World Cup skier and his wife, Bena.This item is significant because it gives details of an important lodge at Falls Creek, Victoria.A black and white image of Paul Hogan, John Cornell and other people sitting near fire place in the dining room at Julian's Lodge in 1973. Paul Hogan and a group of actors and film crew spent several days in Falls Creek filming a Winfield cigarette commercial, in which they were portrayed as ski instructors. According to Julian Brown's book "Falls Creek - How it came to be", they brought in a truck load of polystyrene balls to create snow. The commercial was in 16mm for television and 36 mm for cinemas. This photograph depicts Camp st in Beechworth looking east. This postcard is part of the Rose Series produced by Victorian photographer George Rose’s business, the Rose Stereograph Company. George Rose (1861-1942), is considered one of Australia's best photographers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Rose Stereograph Company was founded in 1880 and became famous for producing stereographs, or stereoviews, which gave the illusion of being in 3D when seen through a hand-held viewer, a big craze of the era. As stereographs lost popularity in the 1920s, Rose switched to production of postcards and decorative cards, and he and the photographers who followed took thousands of scenes around Victoria as well as interstate that became iconic images of Australian life.Black and white rectangular photograph (copy) printed on gloss photographic paper.
