digital copy, Ballarat East High School Magazine 1960, 1960
School History: In February, 1955, Ballarat East High School opened in Hopetoun Street, in the vacated weatherboard buildings of the Girls’ Secondary School. In 1956, however, the School moved to its present site in Fussell Street, but because of the lack of space, Woodwork and Cookery classes were still held at Hopetoun Street. Since then there has been steady progress. The original building was extended, more classrooms and a library being built. A Domestic Science block was completed in 1957. Later, as mentioned elsewhere, sheltersheds, basketball courts, a bidycle shed and a canteen were provided for the pupils from funds raised by the Parents’ Association. Where there were previously bare areas of clayey soil we now have asphalt paths and neat gardens. Shrubs were planted, and seats, painted in the School colours, were places around the asphalted areas. Book, Ballarat School of Mines and Industries Handbook, 2004, 2004
The Ballarat School of Mines was a predecessor institution of Federation University. It was established in 1870 through initiatives of the Ballarat Mining Board which felt there was a need for such a institution because of the declining number of mine managers for the goldfields. Classes i Surveying, Mathematics and Chemistry began in 1871. With the decline in goldmining in the early part of the century, the direction of the College changed and broadened. The Art School was established in 1907, and in 1912 trade classes commenced in carpentry, fitting and turning, plumbing and telegraphy. In 1913 the Ballarat Junior Technical School became part of SMB. In 1970 the tertiary sector of the college was formed and became Ballarat College of Advanced Education when it separated from SMB in 1976. In the same year SMB became a regional College of Technical and Further Education (TAFE).White two ringed folder with an image of the Ballarat School of Mines on the cover. Photograph, Vermont Primary School No 3133, 1980's
The first of the Vermont Primary School buildings was erected on 1872. In 1907 a room was built onto the west side of the building and a new classroom and cloakroom were erected in 1922. Due to rising numbers and traffic volume, Vermont Progress Association urged the government to relocate the school buildings to a less prominent site, and new school buildings were erected in Nurlendi Street in the 1950's. The original timber building remained on the site until its removal to the Nurlendi Street site in the 1990's, and is on the city of Whitehorse Heritage Review.Coloured photograph of the Vermont Primary School while it was standing vacant from the 1950's until 1989 when it was moved to the main school in Nurlendi Road, Vermont.
