Article Four - Goanna Soup? image of Pte E Foster and Cook H L Harvey with "Myrtleford Mary" camp mascot (goanna) Article Five (on rear) - Canteen - image of aborignal squad at canteen. Aboriginal soldiers formed a special all volunteer platoon at No 9 Camp Wangaratta in Victoria from late 1940 until February 1941. No 9 Camp was set up at the Wangaratta Showgrounds to allow the formation of the 2/24th Australian Infantry Battalion prior to leaving for Egypt. Major Joseph Albert Wright a WW1 Light Horse veteran was in charge of this platoon the only Aboriginal squad in the Australian Military Forces at that time. They formed the Gum Leaf Band and led the troops at community singing and assisted in Methodist Church services. Equipment - Object, Stainsby braille writer, 1930-1940's
Henry Stainsby (1859-1925), Supt. of the Birmingham Royal Institution for the Blind, (later General Secretary of the British & Foreign Blind Association) along with Birmingham manufacturer Albert Wayne, introduced their Shorthand Braille Writer, circa 1910-1940. Used at the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind. These machines were often supplied with a case, to deaden the sound when in use. The machine was designed to take down verbatim reports from dictation. As the strip of paper passes automatically through the machine, no time is needed to adjust the paper or the machine for each line. Speeds of 80 - 140 words per minute can be obtained.Contained in a dark blue case which folds down to reveal the keys, this portable Braille writer has six flat keys in front and a space key, attached to a marking device at the back. A roll of thin white paper is mounted on an attachment to the side of the machine, and the paper is threaded along a channel at the top of the machine and comes out the other side in a continuous roll. Memorabilia - Matchbox Holder, Bryant & May, Souvenir of Melbourne's cable trams, 1940
Souvenir of Melbourne cable tram closure in Oct. 1940 - made to fit a box of matches to minimize damage to the box while being carried in a pocket. Consists of a printed photo of cable trailer 571 in Nicholson St Fitzroy with the Royal Exhibition buildings in the background. Lists the opening dates of the various lines. The matchbox is by Bryant and May, made in Britain. On the rear of the box is an advert for the Orient Line of Royal Mail steamers in Europe and Australia. Not know who made the matchbox holder. Second matchbox made by Bryant & May of Richmond - has a 2nd world war message on the box label. The Marion Tilley scrapbook is a significant record of performing arts in Melbourne during the 1950s and 1960s. In the top photo there are only a couple who are identifiable, 3rd from the left is Jack Swatton, (refer Cat No 6719.2P), 4th from left is George Lansell, (refer Cat No 8012P), there is one other from the left being possibly Les Morey The same Les Morey is in the bottom photo 8th from the left. These images are a copy of of the originals which were joined together and laminated as one. They were not taken the same year. Just by appearance the top photo is a number of years earlier than the bottom. There is an original of the top photo still in its cardboard cylinder for postage.
