Medal - British War Medal, Ben Boyd's British War Medal
Ben Boyd enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne, 13 December 1915, giving his age as 42 years and 11 months. At that time he gave Bathurst as parish of birth, and attested that his wife Emma, next of kin, resided in Fitzroy. He gave his occupation as 'cutter'. Boyd reported to Royal Park on 6 January 1916, attached to the 22nd Battalion 11th reinforcements. He embarked for the Middle East on 29 March, and it appears that he spent the rest of his service in Egypt, apart from some four months in Palestine from September 1917 to January 1918. During this time it appears that he was attached to the 11th Light Horse Regiment Provost Corps. There were various promotions to 'temporary Corporal' and 'Acting Sergeant'. Boyd disembarked in Australia on 25 August 1919. The first reference to Yackandandah in Boyd's war record came in his application for the British War Medal and Victory Medal, in a letter dated 10 February 1924. He received those medals on or about 3 March 1924. By that time he had been working in Yackandandah for several years, having been engaged as an 'up-tp-date cutter and tailor' by Mrs Haig in 1921. He continued working as a tailor until his passing in 1957. There is an anecdotal recollection of Boyd sitting up on what was the bank counter making garments and watching the world pass by on High Street, and also reference to him replying to the toast for The Diggers, at a smoke social convened by the Returned Services League to honour Sir Kenneth Beatty, at Martin's Hotel, 8 September 1927. The Yackandandah Museum is housed in what had been the Bank of Victoria and had become the business premises and residence of Haig Tailor. The building bore the title B. Boyd Tailor as late as the 1960's. Isabella Haig sold the building and residence to Yackandandah Historical Society in 1969. Instituted by King George V in 1919 to mark the end of World War I and record the service given, the British War Medal 1914-20, was also variously known as Squeak, or Mutt. Boyd was eligible for having entered a theatre of war during specified periods and having left places of residence and rendered approved service overseas. The medal is cupro-nickel (silver?) with the effigy of George V on the obverse. The reverse has an image of St George on horseback trampling underfoot the eagle shield of the Central Powers, and a skull and cross-bones, the emblems of death. Above this is the risen sun of victory. The years 1914 and 1918 are shown on the outside edge of the reverse surface. A ribbon is attached per a top bar. The ribbon has a wide central watered stripe of orange, flanked by two narrow white stripes, which are in turn flanked by two black pin-stripes, further flanked by two outer stripes of blue. (Refer Notes.) On the obverse, "GEORGIVS V BRITT. OMN: REX ET: IND: IMP" On the reverse "1914 1918" On the edge, stamped, "4378 A-SGT. B. BOYD. PROV. CPS. Kathryn Tilley, Afikoman pouches, by Kathryn Tilley, 2007
Artist's statement: I chose to make these afikoman pouches even though they may not be familiar to or used by all Jewish families. In these little pouches, a small piece of matzah would be placed in the pouch and then hidden in the house for the children to find during the Passover meal. On finding it, a gift is given. The story of Passover and Judaism in general have been kept alive over the centuries. I wanted to honour the passing down of the Torah through the generations, and, in particular, the role of children in its transmission. I have used the Australian desert as a metaphor for the great wilderness crossed by the People of Israel. A recent trip to Broken Hill and beyond inspired me to work with the subtle colours and textures of that landscape and I have incorporated into the work found objects, stones and beads collected there. 'Sunninghill' at 228 Cotham Road (Kew) is an historically significant building due to its associations with Joseph Thomas (Bland) Holt (1851-1942), theatre entrepreneur and actor who lived at the house following his retirement in 1909. Sunninghill (aka Sunning Hill) was one of his residences in Victoria (also 'The Anchorage' at Sorrento). Following Holt's death at Sunninghill on 28 June 1942, the house was left to his wife. After her death the house was bequeathed to Lucy Coppin, daughter of George Coppin. The 'Shakespeare Window' in the State Library of Victoria was at one stage installed in the house. Photograph, Denise gives it back. Best chance in life, 2000
A 2 page double spread feature in the Herald Sun on 29th August 2000 to promote Legacy prior to Legacy Week. The photo of Legatees Rob Allison and Denise Milic is accompanied by the article 'Denise gives it back'. Denise was helped by Legacy when her father, who had served in World War 2, died when she was 12. Denise now joined Legacy to help the older Legatees who have had to slow down their involvement. Until 1996 Legatees were people who had served in the forces. Then it was extended to include Junior Legatees who were the children of servicemen who had died. Rob Allison had been a Legatee for 50 years. The other article was about the types of service Legacy provided for widows and children and included a photo of junior legatees rock climbing on an outing. A story on how a child helped by Legacy has joined as a Legatee. Newspaper - Document, article, Lucky takes charge of Legacy, 1997
An article from the Herald Sun on March 24, 1997. It tells how Brian 'Lucky' Luscombe is taking over as president of Legacy. It gives some biographical details. Including that he was a former president of Clayton RSL, and that he served in World War II as a navigator with 463 RAAF Lancaster squadron and flew missions including the raid over Dresden. His nickname 'Lucky' came after a near miss during training in Tasmania when his plane came close to crashing and somebody said 'Here comes Lucky Luscombe' and the name stuck. It also says Legacy were approaching their 75th Anniversary and were currently caring for 120,00 widows around Australia. It is a nice introduction to the man taking over as President in 1997. Until 2004 a Legatee would only serve as President for a one year term, starting each March.A record that the changes at Legacy were published in the newspapers, both to inform the public and also promote recognition of Legacy's work.Newspaper article with a black and white photo of a Brian Luscombe.past presidents, lucky luscombe -

Functional object - Gas lamp wall bracket, Late 19th to early 20th Century
Gas lamps worked by heating something called a 'mantle' with a gas flame. The mantle then glowed brightly, lighting up the room. Lamps had either two chains, for a ceiling-mounted lamp or a tap for a wall-mounted burner to turn off the gas. These chains or taps could also adjust the flow of the gas and hence the brightness of the mantle. Before Carl Auer von Welsbach invented the gas mantle in the 1890s, all gas lights in homes and street lights had simple gas jets that pointed upwards. In the home, these lights were covered with glass globes and had an overall ornate look making the lamp ascetically pleasing and protecting the flame from being blown out. However, this arrangement was extremely inefficient: To get as much light as possible, the gas had to be turned fully up, resulting in large sheets of flame rising towards a ceiling. Also, because the lamp had to be point upwards, the illumination was directed upwards, i.e. at the ceiling rather than where it was needed. So the usable light for a given amount of gas was minimal but the invention of the gas mantle eventually changed this. It enabled gas lights to have a small flame and to direct their light downwards. The item is significant as it is part of a very ornate gas lamp wall bracket from the late 19th to early 20th century. Its provenance is currently unknown and at this time cannot be associated with a historical event, person or place and the item is assessed as a collective asset.Gas lamp wall bracket; part of a gas lamp. Instrument - Navigational Sextant, 1882-1890
A sextant is an astronomical instrument used to determine latitude and longitude at sea by measuring angular distances, especially the altitudes of the sun, moon, and stars. It is a doubly reflecting navigation instrument and used mainly by sailors to measure the angular distance between two visible objects. The name comes from the Latin sextans, or “sixth part of a unit,” because the sextant’s arc can be 60° or 120° of a circle depending on the model used. The primary use was to measure the angle between an astronomical object and the horizon for the purposes of celestial navigation. The estimation of this angle is known as sighting or shooting the object, or taking a sight. This angle and the time when it was measured is used in order to determine Greenwich Mean Time and hence longitude. Sighting the height of a landmark on land can also give a measure of distance from that object. History: The development of the sextant was as an improvement over the octant, an instrument designed to measure one's latitude. The octant was first implemented around 1731-present but can only measure angles up to 45°. As larger angles were needed to allow the measurement of lunar objects - moon, stars and the sun - at higher angles, the octant was superseded by the sextant. The sextant is a similar instrument but better made and allows larger angles from 60° to 120°. This improvement allows distances to be accurately calculated thereby giving longitude when used with a chronometer. The sextant was derived from the octant in 1757, eventually making all previous instruments used for navigational positioning obsolete. The sextant had been attributed to by John Hadley (1682–1744) and Thomas Godfrey (1704–1749), but reference to the sextant was also found later in the unpublished writings of Isaac Newton (1643–1727). Earlier links can be found to Bartholomew Gosnold (1571–1607) indicating that the use of a sextant for nautical navigation predates Hadley's implementation. In 1922, the sextant was modified for aeronautical navigation by Portuguese navigator and naval officer Gago Coutinho. It should be noted that the octant and quadrant are in the same family as they were, and all are, regarded as sextants. The sextant is representative of it's type and although not fully complete it demonstrates how 18th,19th and 20th century mariners determined their latitude and longitudinal to determine their position on a chart, allowing them to navigate there way across the world's oceans. It also demonstrates the skill and workmanship of the early instrument makers that operated scientific instrument businesses from London and other areas of England to provide most of the navigational instrumentation used by commercial and military navies of the time.Sextant with square, fitted box of polished wood, "Hezzanith" brand. Badges, Hospital Day, Early 20th century
Only one of these badges has a date, that of 1918, but the others appear to come from the same era or from the 1920s or 1930s. These badges were issued and sold as fundraisers for the local hospital or for charities associated with the hospital. The wearing of the badge indicated support for the hospital or charity and this was also a way of publicizing the institution. These badges are of interest as examples of the badges issued to raise funds for, and awareness of, local hospitals. Two are of particular interest as they were issued in Warrnambool. This is a collection of eight badges all associated with Hospital day at Warrnambool. .1 Three are of a stick pin type, which are gold metal with dark blue section around the rim with text and a raised red cross in the centre. They have a long metal pin and the back is hollow. .2 This is the largest of the badges with an image of a patient being attended to by a nurse . A red rim with text is around the edge. .3 This is a smaller version of .2 .4 Small badge in navy blue cream and red with a cream heart in the centre with dark blue text .5Two of the badges have an image of the sun with rays radiating above a blue sea.
