Photograph - John TURNBULL's Store, C. 1880
John TURNBULL was a prominent citizen of Sandridge/Port Melbourne. He started as a baker in Bay St then moved to the corner of Rouse and Nott Streets where he ran his baking business until leasing the premises to various licensees as The Auld Reekie Hotel. The Sands & McDougall Directory of 1880 shows Turnbull owned this store in Rouse Street, next door to the hotel. He served on Council for 15 years with one term as Mayor, 1877-78. John TURNBULL died on 13 March 1889. This item was passed on to Nancy U'REN with a small number of items relating to the Turnbull family with an early 1970s note from Suzanne GORDON, great-granddaughter of Barbara Annie TURNBULL nee GOULD, wishing Nancy good luck with her work on Sandridge.Sepia photograph showing two men standing outside a large single-story shop.rouse street, built environment - commercial, john turnbull, nancy u'ren nee morris -

Sign believed to have been made c.1984 as part of the campaign against amalgamation. Large oblong sign with 'Vintage Port' in white and "Worth Preserving' in red on a blue background. Top left has an image of a red topped shipping beacon. The sign has eyelet holes an each corner & in the centre to enable it to be hung. Book, Printed on Stone, The Lithographs of Charles Troedel, 2020
The book is an account of the Charles TROEDEL & Co and their lithograph production. The author, Amanda SCARDAMAGLIA, mentioned the company in a footnote to her PhD thesis. From the interest came her first book 'From Stone to Print'. this book, 'Printed on Stone', covers the history of lithography as well as that of Charles, company from 1863 to 2013. In 1887 Edward COOPER joined the business & in 1890 he and Charles formed a partnership until the 1890's depression forced the temporary closure of the business in 1895. The book is lavishly illustrated with examples of the work.Hard cover book of 234 pages with its spine bound in red. Images on the pale yellow cover are two of Empire Dandelion Cocoa; one of Harper Oriental Coffee and one of R.
